"The Root," Ethan repeated slowly, the word carrying a weight that made the whole courtyard go quiet around him. "That’s not anywhere we’ve been. Not the Deep Layer, not the foundational chamber, not even Candidate Zero’s throne room."

[NOTICE: The system would confirm this. It has never detected any reference to a location by this designation across its entire archive access - not in the terminal beneath the subject’s own courtyard, not in the foundational chamber’s records, not even in the fragments recovered from Candidate Zero’s throne.]

"So it’s something the governing tier’s kept completely hidden," Malachar said. "Even from everything else we’ve uncovered this entire volume."

"That’s not reassuring," Kael said flatly.

Ethan sat with the weight of the invitation, exhaustion from the day’s confrontation warring against the urgent, immediate demand of yet another crisis stacking on top of everything already unresolved. "A Final Audit," he said slowly. "That doesn’t sound like a negotiation. That sounds like something closer to a verdict."

[NOTICE: The system shares that concern. It would strongly recommend the subject not attend alone, regardless of how the invitation is framed.]

"They specifically requested me," Ethan said. "Just me. The same way they requested my exclusion from the last Concord session, except reversed. First they didn’t want me in the room. Now they want me in the room without anyone else."

"That’s not a coincidence," Sundari said grimly. "That’s a pattern. They isolate whoever they’re targeting before they act. They tried it with Arjun. They likely intended the same with Candidate Zero before we intervened. Now it’s your turn."

The debate over how to respond stretched late into the night, the courtyard’s exhausted delegates weighing the risk of ignoring a summons from an authority that had already demonstrated willingness to act unilaterally against the equally serious risk of Ethan walking into an unknown location, entirely alone, at the exact demand of an entity that had just attempted to erase someone without proper sanction.

"I don’t think refusing is actually safer," Ethan said finally, addressing the assembled group. "If they’re determined enough to bypass the Concord’s authority once, they’ll do it again, regardless of whether I show up. At least if I go, I control when and how this confrontation actually happens, instead of waiting for them to force it on their own terms."

"Then you’re not going without contingency," Priya said firmly. "Even if they demand you attend alone, we’re not leaving you completely without support."

"I have an idea about that," the system interjected, its tone carrying a note of careful calculation Ethan had learned to trust over months of crisis.

"Go ahead," Ethan said.

[NOTICE: The invitation specifies the subject’s physical attendance, alone. It does not specify anything about the system’s own presence being excluded. The system has been with the subject since the very beginning of this apocalypse - inseparable from him in every meaningful sense. If the governing tier intends to exclude support, they will need to specifically exclude something considerably harder to isolate than a group of companions standing in a room.]

Ethan felt a genuine, tired smile tug at his exhausted expression. "So I go in alone, technically. But you’re still with me."

[NOTICE: Precisely. The system would also recommend establishing a monitored connection through Arjun and Candidate Zero’s stabilizing throne - both entities have direct, intimate familiarity with the governing tier’s own architecture, having built and inherited pieces of it themselves. If anything goes wrong, they may be able to intervene in ways the rest of the group cannot.]

Arjun nodded slowly. "I can do that. Candidate Zero as well, now that they’re stabilizing enough to actively participate rather than simply reacting."

The corridor to "the Root" opened the next morning, and unlike every prior transit path Ethan had walked throughout this entire volume, this one carried no warmth, no familiar gold-violet light - just a stark, colorless void that made the Void Sword’s hum drop into something wary and unfamiliar the moment Ethan stepped through.

He emerged into a space that defied easy description, vast and empty in a way that felt less like a physical location and more like the raw, unadorned concept of authority itself - colorless, geometric, stretching in every direction without any discernible boundary.

At its center, the three silver, angular entities Ethan had encountered before hovered, motionless, waiting.

[TRANSMISSION: YOU HAVE ARRIVED.]

"I’m here," Ethan said, standing his ground despite the disorienting emptiness surrounding him. "Let’s hear this ’Final Audit.’"

[TRANSMISSION: THE FINAL AUDIT EXISTS TO DETERMINE ONE MATTER, CONCLUSIVELY. WHETHER THE MULTIVERSAL NETWORK’S CONTINUED STABILITY IS BEST SERVED BY THE STRUCTURE YOU HAVE PROPOSED - THE "WATCH," DISTRIBUTED, ACCOUNTABLE, VULNERABLE TO EXACTLY THE KIND OF SLOW EROSION THAT NEARLY CLAIMED YOUR PREDECESSORS - OR BY RESTORATION OF CENTRALIZED, DEFINITIVE AUTHORITY, PROPERLY MAINTAINED WITHOUT THE INEFFICIENCIES OF COMMITTEE, VOTE, OR DELIBERATION.]

Ethan felt the shape of the confrontation settle into focus. "You’re not here to audit anything. You’re here to make one final case for why everything I’ve built these past weeks should be dismantled."

[TRANSMISSION: WE ARE HERE TO PRESENT EVIDENCE. YOU MAY CHOOSE TO WEIGH IT ACCORDINGLY.]

The colorless void around Ethan shifted, resolving into a series of projected images - Instance 8-Velir’s catastrophic collapse, footage he’d only ever seen through grainy secondhand broadcasts now displayed in stark, unfiltered detail; Voren’s two centuries of quiet dissolution, laid bare in accumulated administrative logs; the near-unraveling of Arjun Mehra, replayed in agonizing slow motion.

[TRANSMISSION: EVERY FAILURE YOU HAVE WITNESSED THIS PAST MONTH TRACES BACK TO THE SAME ROOT CAUSE - DISTRIBUTED, DECENTRALIZED AUTHORITY, LACKING THE DECISIVE CLARITY CENTRALIZED GOVERNANCE PROVIDES. YOUR "WATCH" REPEATS THE SAME STRUCTURAL VULNERABILITY THAT PRODUCED EVERY CASE PRESENTED HERE.]

Ethan felt anger rise, sharp and immediate, but forced himself to stay steady, recognizing the trap embedded in the provocation. "That’s not what any of this actually shows. Instance 8-Velir collapsed because their own Framework tried negotiating a middle ground with you, or something like you, instead of refusing cleanly. Voren dissolved because your own governing tier decided helping him ’wasn’t necessary,’ the exact centralized authority you’re defending making that call unilaterally. And Arjun nearly unraveled because you tried to re-contain him, directly, without anyone’s consent."

[TRANSMISSION: YOUR INTERPRETATION IS NOTED.]

"It’s not interpretation," Ethan said, voice hardening. "It’s the actual sequence of events. Every single failure you just showed me happened because of centralized authority acting alone, without accountability, exactly the model you’re arguing should replace what we’ve built. You’re citing the disease as evidence the cure doesn’t work."

The silver entities’ geometric forms shifted, something in their cold, clinical presence flickering, uncertain.

[TRANSMISSION: THE FINAL AUDIT REQUIRES A DECISIVE OUTCOME.]

[NOTICE: The system, monitoring silently throughout the exchange, finally interjected, its tone carrying something sharp and urgent.]

Ethan tensed. "What."

[NOTICE: The system has just detected something troubling in the structure of this entire confrontation. The "Final Audit" was never designed to be a genuine evaluation.]

[NOTICE: It is a countdown, disguised as deliberation - the same mechanism used against every prior unresolvable candidate who ever challenged this authority directly.]

[NOTICE: The system estimates the governing tier intends to force a resolution, one way or another, within the next several minutes.]

[NOTICE: And it has just detected the true nature of what "resolution" actually means in this context.]

[NOTICE: They are not planning to simply reject the Watch’s authority.]

[NOTICE: They are preparing to erase it entirely - starting with the subject standing directly in front of them.]
