The floorboards of the charcoal warehouse groaned under the sheer mass of the twelve timber crates [index]. The unrefined crystals didn’t just shine; they cast a thick, brilliant blue glare that lit up every soot-stained corner of the room, turning the damp fog rolling through the brick gaps into a liquid blue haze.

Tae-woo and the four unranked vanguards stood around the boxes, their leather vests damp from the midnight rain, their faces tight as they wiped the engine grease from their knuckles.

Eun-bi sat on the edge of the central workbench, her canvas bag resting between her shins. She had her green field radio plugged straight into the warehouse terminal cache, her thumb holding the silver registration key down to force a shortwave link.

"The regional director hasn’t sent the auxiliary scouts yet," she said, her voice dropping into a quiet, blunt whisper that cut through the low hum of the crystals. "The central database still reads the kiln curve transit as ’in progress.’ But we don’t have until morning. The radio wire just picked up an encrypted signal from the outer shipping docks."

She tapped the speaker casing with her trauma scissors, and a sharp, oily voice cut through the white static.

"—Contract finalized. The Sun God main office has bypassed the municipal logs. A private red hunter detachment from the underground Ashen Fangs has been deployed to the mudflat sidings. Active target: Vanguard Kang Jun-ho. open extraction log authorized. No witnesses required."

Static. Whine. Click.

The room went cold as the line went dark. Tae-woo’s broken nose twitched, his large hand tightening around his iron crowbar until the metal shrieked. "The Ashen Fangs don’t use the Ministry guidelines, Jun-ho. They’re rogue Tier 4 killers who hunt for raw cores in the unranked zones. If they drop a perimeter line around this siding, our handcarts won’t make it to the slipway."

Jun-ho didn’t look at the radio box. He stood near the center crate, his left hand gripping the rough hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant. The solid black matte blade rested flat against the wood, its surface absorbing the blue light completely.

In the lower corner of his eye, the solid black options were waiting.

* Level: 20

* Mana: 1500/4000

* Inventory: The Monarch’s Ledger (Bound)

"The Ashen Fangs look for a vanguard who runs," Jun-ho said, his voice flat like stone. He reached into his duffel bag, his bare fingers catching the cold brass lock of The Monarch’s Ledger, and directed his thoughts toward the five men standing around the stove. "We don’t run. We change the drop metrics."

A sudden, freezing rush of white mana shot out of the twelve timber crates, splitting the wood panels into clean gray splinters as the energy flooded straight into the five vanguards. Tae-woo’s chest gave a violent heave, the veins on his neck turning a thick, deep purple as his primitive stamina mutation expanded a hundred times over. Their leather vests cracked under the sudden, massive increase in muscle density, their physical frames locking into solid, Tier 4 elite front-line units before the embers in the stove could even flicker.

Before the men could look at their hands, the heavy iron door of the warehouse gave a loose, rattling click.

Old Man Hak stepped through the threshold, his leather coat stiff with sea crust, his black-stained fingers trembling as he held a rusted oil lantern. "The Fangs are already down by the pier, kid! They brought an illegal black-market auction terminal to trace the mana signature of the ledger! You need to drop the boxes and clear out through the lower drainage pipe!"

Jun-ho didn’t move an inch backward. He walked up to the old captain, his large rubber boots leaving deep, split tracks in the soot of the floor boards.

"Eun-bi, take the ledger," Jun-ho said quietly.

Eun-bi grabbed the leather-bound book from his bag, her yellow rain jacket rustling as she jammed her registration key straight into the side panel of the auction terminal Old Man Hak had dropped on the counter. A sharp gray notification box opened across her sight, her sharp face lit up by a new, brilliant white glare.

[Black Market Interface Synced.]

[Trade Asset: Multiplied Crystal Vault Core.]

[Yield: Legendary-Tier Ashen Monarch Core Plate Armor (Locked to Phase 3).]

"The transaction is registered, Jun-ho," Eun-bi called out, her voice dropping into that regular, flat public-sector drawl, though a dry, dangerous smile pulled at the corner of her lips. "The armor logic is locked to your ribs. The Ashen Fangs won’t even see the baseline metrics before their active line goes dark."

Jun-ho raised the black wedge of The Ash Remnant with his left hand, the square crossguard of raw black basin slag perfectly still in his grip as he looked out through the open door at the dark gray mist of the outer bay.

"Tae-woo, get the shields," Jun-ho said flatly. "The line is opening."

The rain on the offshore docks didn’t drop straight down. It flew sideways, driven by the cold salt wind that whipped between the black basalt rocks of the bay. The wood of the long pier was dark and wet, slippery with old fish grease and river mud that had washed down from the upper sidings.

Jun-ho walked out of the warehouse door first.

He wasn’t wearing his frayed gray undershirt anymore. The black market terminal had done its work cleanly. Locked straight onto his ribs was the Ashen Monarch Core Plate. It didn’t look like the shiny alloy suits the city commanders wore; it was made of thick, unpolished stone-gray slabs that looked like they had been cut straight out of an old mountain gate foundation. The surface was rough, absorbing the salt spray without leaving a single wet line, its weight completely hidden behind his twenty-five-hundred-point mana pool.

Tae-woo and the four newly evolved vanguards walked right behind his shoulders. Their physical size had changed, their chests wide under their cracked leather vests, their arms thick as tree trunks. They didn’t carry short daggers or light shields anymore; each man held a wide, square block of dark basin rock they had pulled from the furnace floor to use as a wall.

"They’re by the secondary fuel crane," Eun-bi said, her voice a quiet, flat murmur right at his elbow. She was running behind the front line, her canvas bag slung tight across her gray flannel shirt. Her electric headlamp cut a thin yellow line through the gray mist, her bare fingers keeping a firm grip on the bone handle of her scissors. "Six of them. The Ashen Fangs don’t use the standard guild formations. They have three shadow rogues in the front and three curse mages sitting on the upper crane deck."

Jun-ho stopped ten paces from the crane. He held The Ash Remnant low in his left hand, the new hemp wrap on the handle rough and dry against his skin.

A sharp gray notification box opened across his vision, perfectly silent.

[Encounter Active: The Ashen Fangs (Tier 4 Rogue Detachment) x6.]

[Status: Unfiltered / Private Bounty Logic.]

[System Note: Phase 3 attributes will calculate all experience gains at a 100x value under the Monarch’s Ledger.]

The three shadow rogues in the front didn’t wear uniforms. They had long, dark cotton coats wrapped around their torsos, their faces hidden behind gray cloth wraps that smelled of old sulfur. Their hands held long, thin bone knives that vibrated with a greasy purple light—a high-tier rot attribute meant to bypass a vanguard’s skin defenses.

"The Sillim vanguard," the leader of the rogues said, his voice sounding like dry sand shifting in a box. He didn’t look at the stone armor on Jun-ho’s chest; his small eyes were locked onto the black ledger tucked into the canvas duffel bag. "The regional director paid ten million won just for your location log, kid. But the book in your bag is worth a whole block of apartments in the central district. Drop the bag and step onto the lower planks."

Jun-ho didn’t answer him. He took one step forward, his large rubber boots making a steady, quiet scrape against the wet wood of the pier.

[Activating Trait: Ashen Domain - Phase 3.]

[Mana Cost: 500 per minute. Current Mana: 2400/4000.]

A sudden, circular wave of thick gray frost blew outward from his boots, instantly covering the wet timber planks and turning the mud puddles between the rocks into solid white discs of ice for thirty meters around the crane. The temperature dropped forty degrees in a microsecond, the black sea water splashing against the pilings turning into long, sharp icicles that hung still in the fog.

The three shadow rogues lunged forward together, their bone knives cutting through the cold air in a fast, low line meant to pierce his thighs.

But the moment their dark leather boots crossed the thirty-meter perimeter of his domain, their kinetic velocity died by half. Their movements became slow and clumsy, their arms tracking through the frozen air like they were moving through thick syrup.

"Tae-woo, hold the center," Jun-ho said quietly.

"Got it," the big vanguard grunted.

Tae-woo and the four elite front-line units stepped forward in unison, slamming their wide blocks of basin rock straight into the wooden planks. The five stone walls formed a solid, unbroken barrier that completely blocked the narrow pier lane.

The shadow rogues’ bone knives hit the dark rock with a dull, harmless click that didn’t leave a single scratch on the stone.

The three curse mages on the upper crane deck tried to raise their bone rods to release a high-tier blood lock, but Jun-ho didn’t give them the seconds they needed to finish the chant.

He reached into his left pocket with his good hand, his fingers closing around the cold brass casing of the Paradox Dial.

[Paradox Dial Utility Active.]

[Target: The Ashen Fangs (Active Curse Circles).]

[Mana Cost: 200. Current Mana: 2200/4000.]

He pressed the small brass button down.

A heavy, metallic click echoed through the entire maritime sector—a mechanical sound that didn’t travel through the ears, but froze the mana pathways of the room instantly. The greasy purple light spinning around the mages’ rods died out completely, turning into dull rods of gray wood that didn’t let out a single spark. The active skill lines inside their own vision turned a solid, locked gray color for sixty seconds, leaving their rear line completely helpless in the middle of the open bay.

Jun-ho took two long steps forward, his rubber boots sliding smoothly over the white ice. He raised The Ash Remnant with his left hand, the new hemp wrap solid in his grip, and brought the sharp matte edge of the five-hundred-fold blade straight down onto the leader’s bone knife.

The thunderclap was faster this time. The long bone knife didn’t just break; it disintegrated completely into thousands of tiny white splinters that blew straight back into the rogue’s leather coat, the shockwave throwing all three front-line killers backward into the dark sea water in a single, massive wave of white foam.

Jun-ho didn’t look back at the water. He shifted his gaze up to the crane deck where the three mages were trying to shake their dark rods, his face an unmoving sheet of stone under his gray hood.

Eun-bi walked out from behind the stone barriers, her heavy canvas bag slung tight across her arm as her silver scissors glinted faintly in the gray light. She looked at the three mages trapped on the upper deck, a dry, sharp smile pulling at the corner of her lips.

"The private contract is officially dark, gentlemen," she called out through the frozen mist, her voice returning to that flat, public-sector drawl. "The auditors in the central district won’t even see your names on the log before the morning shift turns the power off."

"Let’s clear the upper line," Jun-ho said, his fingers settling perfectly around the rough hemp handle of his sword as the gray text at the bottom of his eye began to count down the remaining targets on the slipway.
