Global Descent: I Alone Can See Hidden Evolution Paths
Chapter 210: shadow
The interior of Old Man Jo’s shop did not smell like the clean, maritime salt of the upper docks. It was built from deep, ink-black volcanic basalt blocks hauled from the lower reef shelves, and the floorboards beneath the heavy stone counters were slick with a cold, purplish oil that leaked out from the display cases. A single iron oil lamp hung from a low, curved ceiling spar, its yellow wick guttering wildly every time the sea wind whistled through the open timber slats of the bay.
Jun-ho sat on a low, three-legged cedar bench near the cold stone hearth, his large rubber boots flat against the damp floor boards. He had unslung his heavy canvas duffel bag, setting it down between his ankles with a quiet, deliberate care that made the thick floor planks give a small, dry creak under the weight.
His left hand remained loose but steady around the hemp wrap of The Ash Remnant. The solid black matte blade lay flat across his lap, its four ancient characters—[The Ash Remnant]—gleaming weakly under the yellow lamp glare.
Right at the corner of his eye, his status screen stayed perfectly still in the dark.
[ Level: 23]

[Active Trait: Ashen Domain (Phase 3)]
Rea sat on the edge of the low wooden counter right next to his shoulder. She had unzipped her yellow rain jacket, letting the heavy fabric slide down her elbows until it hung loose from her waist. She wore only the thin black silk tunic underneath, the deep V-neck line pulling wide as she leaned forward, exposing the smooth, pale curve of her collarbones and the rounded fullness of her chest.
She shifted her position with a slow, deliberate swing of her hips, her long bare legs dangling over the edge of the stone counter, the high-slashed silk parting all the way to her upper thigh to show her smooth skin under the yellow light. Her full crimson lips curved into a lazy, teasing smile, and her golden-blue eyes spun slowly as her gaze locked straight onto his face.
"The old man is taking his time with the appraisal, big guy," Rea whispered, her voice dropping into a smooth, sultry register that was thick with invitation. She leaned her torso down until her shoulder was completely wedged under his armpit, her wild orchid perfume cutting straight through the sour grease smell of the forge. Her warm thigh pressed firmly against his denim trousers, her breath hitting his neck in soft, rhythmic puffs. "He knows the Sun God office has already put the thirty-million-won bounty on the wire logs. He’s trying to calculate if these six primal cores are worth the risk of a regional audit."
"The audit doesn’t run past the twelve-mile line," Jun-ho said, his voice flat like stone.
"It doesn’t run if the mages stay dead in the mud, idiot," Eun-bi’s voice called out from the back line of the room.
She was standing near the heavy iron partition wall, her canvas bag slung tight across her gray flannel shirt. Her dark hair was half-dry, loose strands sticking to her forehead, but her sharp face was set in a hard, stubborn line as she watched Rea’s fingers slowly trace a small line down Jun-ho’s bare forearm with a teasing, light friction. Eun-bi tapped her silver trauma scissors against her wrist ring with a sharp, impatient click.
"The shortwave receiver is still picking up the harbor tracking pulse. The naval cutters down the coast are shifting their search lanes toward the lower reef blocks. We have less than twenty minutes before the local tracker details clear the outer pier."
Old Man Jo walked out from behind the heavy iron screen, his leather apron dark with coal soot. He had a completely bald head, a short gray beard that didn’t hide the deep burn scars on his jaw, and arms that looked like knotted pine roots. In his large, calloused hands, he held a long, rectangular box made of dark mountain cedar, its casing sealed with a thin strip of unrefined black lead.
He set the box down on the granite counter with a heavy, hollow scrape that made the oil lamp twitch. He didn’t look at Rea’s legs, and he didn’t look at Eun-bi’s scissors; his small, sharp eyes locked straight onto the matte-black edge of Jun-ho’s sword.
"Gyeong-su made the core wedge, but he didn’t give it an attribution socket," the old fence said, his voice deep and raspy like two bricks grinding together over the sound of the engine roar outside. "He always was a clumsy brute who expected the user to supply the bone lines. These six primal cores you brought down from the northern vault... they aren’t standard crystal drops. They carry the unfiltered logic of the Ash Monarch phase."
"Can you bind them?" Jun-ho asked.
"I can bind the hilt wrapping," Old Man Jo grunted, his thumb cracking the lead seal on the cedar box. He pulled the lid back, revealing a thick spool of unrefined hemp cord that was completely soaked in a dark, glowing black fluid—the concentrated oil of a Tier 5 iron crawler. "But the process requires more than just raw hammer pressure, kid. The metal responds to your ribs. If your internal mana pool chokes on the circulation, the whole blade will shatter into useless slag before the first line is locked."
Jun-ho didn’t answer him with a speech. He reached into his duffel bag with his bare left hand, his fingers closing around the cold brass lock of The Monarch’s Ledger.
[The Monarch’s Ledger System Active.]
[Target Asset: The Ash Remnant (Phase 2 Upgrade).]
[Resource Requirement: 6 High-Tier Primal Cores.]
[Draining 1,000 Mana points. Current Mana: 1700/4500.]
"Start the fire," Jun-ho whispered into the quiet room.
[Applying 100x Multiplier to Item Evolution...]
A sudden, freezing wave of white mana shot out of the six blue crystals on the counter, splitting the stone casing into clean gray splinters as the energy flooded straight into the dark cedar box. The thick hemp cord didn’t burn; it changed color instantly, turning from a rough charcoal gray into a deep, solid matte-black that looked like dark glass. The oil of the crawler didn’t run down the sides; it pulled inward, a violent suction that made the air inside the small forge let out a sharp pop from the sudden displacement of weight.
The four ancient characters etched near the handle base—[The Ash Remnant]—ignited with a brilliant, white-hot fire that cast no light but made the water inside the old fence’s cleaning buckets ripple in small, perfect circles.
[Item Evolution Successful: The Ash Remnant (Phase 3 Form - Soul Bound).]
[Item Attribute: Physical strikes carry a 1,000x weight calculation upon impact. Your mana conductivity is increased by 80%.]
[New Passive Gained: The Ash Monarch’s Edge cannot be blocked by standard tier shields or corporate armor lines.]
Jun-ho stood up from his low bench, his large rubber boots making a quiet, firm thud on the packed dirt floor. He lifted the newly upgraded weapon with his left hand, the heavy hemp grip feeling as light and fluid as a dry willow branch in his palm, balanced perfectly against his multiplied Phase 3 strength.
Rea let out a short, soft laugh that sounded like silk sliding over stone, her golden-blue eyes spinning in a lazy, victorious circle as she slid off the counter. She walked right next to his stride, her long bare arm brushing slowly against his shoulder guard, her full, perfect shape twisting smoothly through the gray mist as she looked at the door. "The blade is hard enough, big guy. But the local tracker details are already stepping off their wooden decks."
Before the old fence could even close his empty cedar box, a heavy, grinding noise exploded from the main street lane outside.
The door of the shop didn’t just rattle; it was kicked completely off its top hinge, the wooden frame splitting down the middle as three independent tracker details burst through the threshold. Fifteen men in thick, grease-stained leather vests and grey steel visors stepped into the room, their short crossbows primed with glowing blue tracking arrows, their hands holding heavy iron maces that were thick as tree branches.
"Target identified!" the lead tracker shouted through his mask, his hand already releasing his string. "Kang Jun-ho! The Sun God contract is closed! Drop the black bar and get on the gravel!"
Tae-woo and the four elite front-line units stepped straight into the center of the narrow aisle, their massive Tier 4 frames forming a solid line of leather and muscle that completely blocked the path to the counter. They didn’t drop back an inch. They hoisted their wide blocks of dark basin rock with both hands, slamming the stone edges flat against the dirt floor to form an unbroken mountain wall across the room.
The fifteen blue tracking arrows hit the dark rock barriers with a rapid series of dull, harmless clicks that didn’t leave a single white scratch on the stone.
Jun-ho raised The Ash Remnant with his left hand, the new matte-black hemp wrap solid and dry in his grip. He didn’t drop into a defensive stance, and he didn’t look back at the old fence. He let the lake of cold mana behind his ribs break its banks completely, the Ashen Domain - Phase 3 expanding outward in a flat, thirty-meter ring of thick grey frost that turned the wet grease on the floor boards into solid white discs of ice instantly.
"Clear the lane," Jun-ho said flatly, his boots sliding smoothly over the white ice as he stepped right past the vanguard line, the blunt tip of his thousand-fold black sword pointing straight at the trackers’ grey steel visors.
