The young man in the green hoodie suddenly stopped, turned back as if looking at his companion, and lowered his voice:

"The boss did say before, some Extraordinary Zombies will hide inside buildings during the day."

His voice was trembling slightly as he realized this was probably exactly their situation now. There were no people here, and no Zombies in sight.

That Extraordinary Zombie might be staring at them like a tiger watching its prey right this very moment.

The companion with the crowbar heard this, his eyelids started twitching wildly, his movements turned stiff as he walked. "How come we run into one and then another?"

When they saw Su Changxing turn around and bolt earlier, they had also assumed Su Changxing was an Extraordinary Zombie. Otherwise, how could he act so strangely—carrying a backpack, a machete strapped to his back, dressed almost like a person.

It was terrifying and ghastly, all because of the Extraordinary Zombies.

In daylight, you needed at least ten adult men with combat capability to have a chance at taking down a single Extraordinary Zombie, and even then it would be a bloody victory.

But there were only two of them, and neither was an Extraordinary. The moment they ran into an Extraordinary Zombie, it was a dead end.

The two of them turned and headed downstairs, but at this point where could they run? The roar of a Zombie rose behind them, echoing through the stairwell.

No one lets meat delivered to their mouth go to waste, and Zombies are no exception. The moment it saw the two trying to leave, it moved, poking its head out from a hole in the ceiling above.

The young man in the green hoodie turned and looked back; the stairwell was an empty void.

"It’s up there!"

The companion shouted, noticing the Zombie clinging to the very top of the stairwell like a spider, fixing them with scarlet eyes.

"Run!"

The young man in the green hoodie shouted, and was the first to take long strides down the stairs.

But at this distance, how could they possibly get away? With a scream, his companion was slammed to the floor by that spider-like Zombie, and torn and bitten again and again.

The crunch of bones being chewed to pieces was disturbingly clear; his scalp went numb.

The young man in the green hoodie ran downward without looking back, his mind set wholly on escape—then he heard movement behind him in despair. That Zombie had caught up.

Pa~

He too was knocked to the ground—but he heard another sound, like a blade slicing through the air.

Cold black blood sprayed across his face. That spider-like Zombie had actually had one arm severed, and retreated in pain, no longer pressing the attack on him.

Thinking someone had come to save him, the young man in the green hoodie, full of joy, looked back—only to see a crooked-neck Zombie standing beside him with a Silver-White Machete in hand, its face savage and horrific.

This was true despair: two Extraordinary Zombies boxing him in from front and back in the stairwell.

Just as he was getting ready to lie down, close his eyes, and wait for death, the machete-wielding Zombie stepped past him instead, launching an attack at the other Zombie, as if he didn’t exist at all.

A chance to run.

He tried to crawl up from the floor, only to find his hands and feet numb; instead he stumbled, tumbling down the stairs. But that more or less counted as an escape.

Su Changxing had followed these two humans up, and of course his goal wasn’t them or whatever was in their backpacks, but that Extraordinary Zombie.

Since he’d discovered it, he couldn’t let it go.

He had his eyes on the Extraordinary Crystal in the thing’s brain—that was what could make him grow stronger fast. The Zombie was his prey, and he was the hunter.

In theory, if a Zombie possessed extremely high intelligence, it could grow rapidly stronger in a very short time: devouring humans, devouring Extraordinary Crystals, even devouring its own kind.

Su Changxing hadn’t considered gnawing on human corpses, and besides, that method wasn’t very efficient.

So hunting Extraordinary Zombies and devouring the Extraordinary Crystals in their brains was obviously the best way for him right now to enhance his strength.

Although Su Changxing was still a crooked-neck Zombie, dealing with the wall-climbing Zombie in front of him was no problem at all.

The young man in the green hoodie ran to the stairway landing and heard the dense sound of flesh being sliced apart. He looked back. The spider-like Zombie was already chopped into several pieces on the ground, black blood splattered everywhere.

"It... it’s dead?"

He stopped where he was, his feet as if bound by ropes, unable to move even a step. In those clear eyes as blue as the sky, he saw mountains of corpses and seas of blood.

Su Changxing hadn’t intended to kill this human from the start, but when he saw the guy suddenly freeze and stand there motionless, he mentally cursed that this idiot just wouldn’t run. Not afraid of dying?

The scene held for a second or two.

Su Changxing felt vaguely awkward, crouched down, and dug the Extraordinary Crystal out of the Zombie’s brain with his hand. It was also an ink-green crystal, exuding that beautiful Extraordinary flavor. He couldn’t wait to swallow it.

Compared to flesh and blood, this thing stirred his body’s craving far more—probably because it held plenty of Energy that could satisfy his body.

That also let him more or less understand why that previous Extraordinary Zombie had been so obsessed with Extraordinary Crystals. They not only made you stronger, they also sated a craving like an addiction.

This is the Abyss. The process of constantly strengthening the self is the process of walking toward the Abyss.

He looked back again. That guy was already gone.

"Looks like he was scared stupid just now."

A stiff smile appeared on his face; he habitually kept a smile.

From beginning to end, he had never thought about killing the man, simply because he still held onto a piece of pure human nature, and a piece of Buddha Nature from the weihuo Monk—one that belonged to himself, and another reflected in others.

He was deliberately maintaining his humanity and Buddha Nature, preserving his self and not losing himself in the Extraordinary fog.

Most High-tier Extraordinary are extreme, like a Divine Spirit, very pure—either radiant and magnificent without a speck of blemish, or Darkness and Chaos twisted to the limit.

Within the Extraordinary, only purity can preserve the self, like day and Darkness, like Truth and illusion...

Su Changxing wiped the freshly dug Extraordinary Crystal on his not-so-clean backpack, wiping off the black blood, then tossed it into his mouth, half-closing his eyes with a look of enjoyment.

After becoming an Extraordinary Zombie, the muscles on his face were no longer so stiff; he could barely make some expressions.

Next, he walked to the human corpse higher up on the stairs. The corpse’s neck had a huge chunk bitten out; death had come quickly, and the blood on the floor was still warm.
