Global Lords: Building the Strongest Civilization with SSS Rank Talent
Chapter 354 - 354: The Basement of the Museum
Connor stared at the empty plastic bin resting on the security conveyor belt. The automated drones hovered near the reinforced glass doors to scan the students and confiscate every unauthorized electronic device.
The portable datapad and the advanced scanning lens sat securely in the guard's lockbox. The digital filters protecting the studio architects remained completely impenetrable without the decryption hardware.
'We are entirely blind without those scanners,' Connor thought, gripping the straps of his canvas bag. 'Rubedo will execute the populations if we fail to deliver the names.'
Leo bumped his shoulder against Connor and gestured toward a loud group of students from a neighboring district.
The elderly archivist herded the class away from the entrance and led them through the main exhibition hall.
The curator guided the teenagers past towering displays of obsolete server racks and early quantum processors. Dusty placards detailed the massive artificial intelligence boom of 2025 behind thick glass cases.
Leo grabbed a half-empty soda bottle from a nearby trash receptacle. "We do it the old way. Nelson, cause a problem."
Nelson flashed a wide grin and walked directly into the center of the rival student group. He swung his arm to shatter the plastic bottle violently against the nearest teenager's chest.
A physical brawl ignited instantly across the exhibit floor. Students threw punches and shoved each other into the antique display cases.
The security drones abandoned the checkpoints and swarmed the escalating violence to restore order.
Ophelia utilized the chaotic distraction to slip behind a chaperone. She lifted a physical master keycard from the faculty lanyard and slid the plastic card directly into Connor's palm.
Connor gripped the stolen keycard and backed away from the fighting crowd. He caught Leo's eye and jerked his head toward the designated restroom corridors.
They managed to slip completely unnoticed past the primary security checkpoint while the faculty desperately tried to separate the brawling students.
'We have to navigate the analog archives entirely on our own,' Connor thought, sliding the keycard into his pocket.
They pushed through the restroom doors and entered a sterile, white-tiled maintenance hallway. The secure zone had just started, and the basement archives rested several subterranean levels below their current position.
A network of surveillance cameras tracked the ceiling corners above a series of reinforced steel barricades.
Leo pointed at the blinking red optical sensors mounted on the walls. "The master keycard only gets us through the mechanical locks. They still utilize active motion trackers for the lower sub-levels."
Connor adjusted his canvas bag and stared at the imposing steel door blocking the end of the hallway. "We have to find a blind spot and map the patrol routes. We are getting into that basement."
"The cameras sweep in an intersecting pattern. The far corner creates a blind spot for exactly four seconds."
Connor watched the mechanical rotation of the lenses while tracking the timing in his head.
The moment the cameras panned outward, he sprinted down the hallway with Leo and Ophelia close behind. He swiped the stolen keycard through the reader on the final steel door. The locking mechanism clicked loudly.
They pushed the barricade inward and slipped onto the concrete stairwell right before the cameras swept back across the corridor.
The group descended the concrete stairs into the dim basement aisles. Dust coated the linoleum floor. Towering metal cabinets lined the subterranean archive. Connor bypassed the obsolete server displays to locate the specific drawer labeled Miami 2024.
He pulled a physical film reel from the metal slot and threaded it into the offline optical viewing machine.
'This room possesses zero network connectivity,' Ophelia thought, watching the analog machine whir to life. 'The game client cannot reach us down here.'
The projector bulb illuminated the glass screen with scanned newspaper clippings detailing the mass disappearance. Connor leaned closer to read the printed ink.
The text on the completely offline film reel suddenly shifted across the glass display. The letters detached from the articles and rearranged themselves with impossible fluidity.
The black ink formed the distinct facial outline of the silver-eyed girl. Her digital gaze locked onto Connor through the analog machine. A stark white message burned itself directly into the physical film.
The offline projector spat out a printed ticket onto the desk.
Connor picked up the slip of paper and read the text.
'THE ARCHITECTS SEE YOU. ABANDON THE SEARCH.'
Leo looked over Connor's shoulder and read the printed warning. The studio possessed a reach that extended far beyond digital firewalls. The physical world offered absolutely zero sanctuary from the game engine.
"Abandon anything digital or electronic. Let's search for physical papers and files."
He pulled a physical manila folder from the rusted metal slot. The yellowed paper crinkled loudly in the quiet room. Leo held up a small penlight to illuminate the text.
Connor flipped through the brittle printed records. "The entire class of 2014 attended a ten-year reunion at a venue located in the High District."
Ophelia leaned over the desk to read the faded ink. "A massive localized earthquake cracked the floor of the ballroom. Twenty-nine people completely vanished during the banquet."
"Redmond Vane is on the official guest list alongside Marcus Thorne, Chris Pitt, and Elena Ross." Connor pointed a finger at the printed names. "The developers incorporated real missing persons into the game engine lore to build their narrative… or so I want to say, but after witnessing all this shit and threats, I am convinced they are behind this."
"What should we do?" Ophelia asked with a panicked look on her face.
"Don't worry. We are getting threats, which means that we are getting closer to the real discovery," Leo responded with a nervous grin on his face as he reassured Ophelia.
"What's next? We didn't find anything about the studio or the developer. We only confirmed what we already knew."
"No," Connor shook his finger. "We now have all the information about the twenty nine missing persons. We have their address and everything, and although it's not relevant today, we can still cross-reference and find out more about them."
