Chapter 497: Chapter 56: Sights of the Main Territory (2)
"Why do you grow so many plants here?"
Li Hua looked down at the vast stretches of plants right next to the Abyssal Defense Line and was very puzzled.
"Lord Li Hua, don’t underestimate them. These aren’t ordinary plants. They possess all sorts of incredible offensive and defensive abilities and are the most important component of the territory’s defenses."
"These plants you see are the territory’s true defense line."
"Their leader is very strong. I’m not even sure I could beat it."
"Even you can’t beat it?"
Li Hua was utterly shocked to hear Yuan Xiaobo say that. This was the same Yuan Xiaobo who had once sparred with the Legendary Sword Immortal from his own territory. Yuan Xiaobo had high Defense Power and strong attacks, while the Sword Immortal had powerful attacks and incredible speed. Neither could get the upper hand, and the match had ended in a draw.
And now Yuan Xiaobo was saying he couldn’t beat the leader of these plants?
’No matter how powerful a plant is, it’s still just a plant, right?’
’Can a plant really reach the level of a Legendary Hero?’
’And they’re the defense line?’
’I’ve really seen it all now!’
Li Hua couldn’t help but feel glad he had pledged allegiance to Lin Yu.
Otherwise, after leaving the competition, how else could he witness such an exciting world?
He would probably have already taken his sister back to Black Salt City to start living the life of an ordinary wealthy man.
Once the Hovercar flew past the outer defense line, it entered the wilderness.
...
A few hours later, Li Hua’s initial amazement had turned to boredom.
For the past few hours, the scenery outside the Hovercar had been almost unchanging—just an expansive forest. The animals within it weren’t afraid of people; instead, they would gaze over with curiosity.
He was finally starting to understand why the messenger sent earlier had taken so long. It would be easy to get lost in this environment with a moment’s carelessness; no wonder it took so much time.
"Brother Yuan, doesn’t Boss Lin use these areas? Does he just let them sit empty?"
"Now you understand why our Lord doesn’t conquer outside territories, don’t you? The main territory is just too vast, and we’re not using most of it."
"How nice. I’d love to have that kind of problem!!"
"You’re a member of the territory now. This meeting is about planning the territory’s future, so this problem will be yours too, won’t it?"
"Hahaha, that’s true!"
Hearing Yuan Xiaobo say this, Li Hua realized he was right.
"Besides, it’s not like these areas are completely unused. They’re all being put to use."
Li Hua asked, confused, "Huh? How are they being used? I don’t see it."
Yuan Xiaobo didn’t reply. He just pulled up the map on the Hovercar’s display. When he saw a combat icon in a nearby area, he said, "I’ll show you. Then you’ll understand."
The Hovercar then changed course, no longer flying straight toward the heart of the territory.
Soon, the Hovercar arrived at the edge of a small lake. The surrounding area was teeming with fighting animals—carnivores and herbivores alike, all battling with all their might.
Fresh blood from the injured animals stained the ground, and even the lake water was tinged with red.
However, there weren’t many animal corpses on the ground.
Whenever an animal lost a fight, it would lie on the ground in surrender and then leave the battlefield of its own accord.
Judging from how they fought, these animals were all quite strong. Nearly all of them had their own skills; they were clearly not ordinary animals.
Li Hua was astonished when he saw the battlefield below. "Why are these animals doing this? Aren’t you going to intervene? They all look quite capable. They’d be a great source of troops!"
"This is their trial. Why should we intervene?"
"Are you saying these animals are the territory’s soldiers?"
"Of course not. They haven’t undergone their class change, so they don’t count as soldiers. They’re just ordinary subjects of the territory."
"Huh?"
Li Hua never expected that his casual question would receive such an absurd answer.
These animals were actually subjects of the territory. Recalling the animals he had seen everywhere in the forest, he couldn’t help but ask Yuan Xiaobo again, "Were the animals we saw in the forest earlier subjects of the territory as well?"
"That’s right. All animals within the territory are its subjects."
Li Hua didn’t ask any more questions. He took a deep breath, trying hard to suppress the fear in his heart.
’I’m Lin Yu’s subordinate now. This army is on my side. I should be happy!’
’Happy!!!’
...
Li Hua repeated this to himself over and over. With great effort, he finally managed to convince himself, come to terms with his new position, and relax.
Once he relaxed, Li Hua looked at the battlefield again. The fear in his heart was gone, replaced by a flicker of excitement.
He then voiced another concern. "Isn’t this kind of trial a bit too cruel? I see they aren’t attacked after surrendering, but it still looks like quite a few have died!"
"The participants all want to improve themselves. They were informed of the risks before joining. It’s completely voluntary."
"But is it necessary to fight so desperately just for combat experience?"
Li Hua still didn’t understand why they would fight so desperately.
Yuan Xiaobo didn’t answer. He pointed below. "Look, the battle is about to end."
Li Hua looked down. Many animals, exhausted, were surrendering and leaving. The number of combatants still standing on the battlefield dwindled.
In a short while, only a single leopard was left standing in the very center of the battlefield.
(After Lin Yu changed the reward rules for the middle-ring territories, there was only one prize: a single All-Attribute Spirit Fruit that granted +10 to all stats. Because of this, in the battle royales the animals initiated themselves, they would fight until only one victor remained.)
Then, a green tentacle materialized in the air above the leopard. It placed a fruit in front of the animal before vanishing without a trace.
