Chapter 88 - 70: Encountering the Siege of the Graveyard
Chapter 88: Chapter 70: Encountering the Siege of the Graveyard
"Hello! I am the lord of this territory, Li Hua. And who might you be?"
"Hello, esteemed Lord. We are an exploration team from the Divine Wood Territory. We saw this valuable-looking land and came to pay a visit," Lin Kong said, stepping forward once more.
"Divine Wood Territory?"
[World Chat Channel (789654)]
Li Hua: "Does anyone have a territory called Divine Wood Territory?"
Li Hua: "Does anyone have a territory called Divine Wood Territory?"
Li Hua: "Does anyone have a territory called Divine Wood Territory?"
Li Hua: "I’ll say it three times because it’s important. If no one claims them, I’m kicking your exploration team out, ’kay?"
Lin Yu: "Me, me, me."
Lin Yu: "My territory’s exploration team ended up at your place? My apologies. Please look after them for me. Thanks!"
Li Hua: "No problem. I was mainly worried that monsters might be impersonating a lord’s exploration team to get into my territory. Asking is just safer."
Lin Yu: "Monsters can do that now?"
Li Hua: "Not that I know of. I was just worried. Just say I’m being paranoid."
Li Hua: "By the way, what’s the name of your team’s leader?"
Lin Yu: "Yuan Xiaobo, or Lin Kong."
Li Hua: "Thanks!"
...
"By the way, may I ask your name?" Li Hua asked nonchalantly.
"Ah, my apologies, I forgot to introduce myself. I’m Lin Kong, in charge of external communications. This is our captain, Yuan Xiaobo, and this is..." Lin Kong, looking a little embarrassed, quickly introduced the members of his team to the town’s lord.
After hearing Lin Kong’s introduction, Li Hua finally let down his guard and led them on a tour of the town.
For some reason, walking through the town made Lin Kong feel more at ease than walking through the forest, as if he were back in his own territory.
As the group stood before a large wooden building, listening to Lord Li Hua’s explanations, a tall tower in the town suddenly let out a flash of light.
The team members’ hearts jolted. In that instant, they felt a fluctuation of the Spiritual Energy within their bodies and immediately understood: this town also had Spiritual Energy.
The faint traces of arrogance that had been on their faces vanished. They began looking at the surrounding buildings with caution, as if every seemingly ordinary structure concealed a great secret.
After touring for a while, Lin Kong suddenly asked, "Lord, may I ask you a question?"
"Of course," Li Hua casually agreed.
’Whether I answer or not is another matter, though!’
Lin Kong asked with some curiosity, "I saw your troops heading out just now. May I ask where your forces are going?"
"Ah, it’s like this." Li Hua wasn’t evasive; it truly wasn’t something that needed to be kept secret.
"A lord discovered a large zombie graveyard nearby. He felt he couldn’t take it down alone, so he shared its location and invited nearby lords to launch a joint assault."
"Then how do you plan to divide the building fragments from the graveyard at the end?" Lin Kong was quite curious about this kind of joint operation and how they would distribute the rewards.
"I heard that for this month, during attacks on Catastrophe Camps, the system will automatically calculate each lord’s contribution and distribute the spoils accordingly," Li Hua explained.
"That’s pretty good, then. Could you take us to see it? This is our first time seeing a joint operation; we’d like to broaden our horizons."
"Of course. I was heading over anyway. I’ll take you with me."
Neither of them noticed that their conversation had long since surpassed the typical boundaries between a lord and a soldier.
...
The group followed Lord Li Hua to the edge of a small grove.
By this time, seventy to eighty thousand soldiers had already gathered there. However, most of the lords’ armies were somewhat disorganized, with very few in standard formation, consisting instead of a chaotic mix of various troop types.
The only thing they had in common was the lack of any non-human soldiers; they were all troops of the Human Race.
At the entire gathering point, only Li Hua’s troops and another contingent of barbarians looked somewhat orderly.
Lin Kong couldn’t help but shake his head. He felt this ragtag army was just going to serve as fodder for the graveyard.
"What’s wrong, Lin Kong? You look down on these troops?" Li Hua asked, noticing him shaking his head.
"No, no, not at all. It’s just that with everyone in different attire, it looks like a motley crew. Lord Li’s army, on the other hand, looks much more imposing." Lin Kong quickly denied it; he had no desire to get into a fight.
"Hahaha, you flatter me! These are all local lords, so I know a bit about them. After all, anyone can recruit from the Recruitment Offices outside the territories, so we all have some information on the different troop types."
"Don’t be fooled by their ragtag appearance. It’s mainly because their territories have limited resources, so they can’t support large armies. Their only choice is to select the strongest possible troop types."
"Those ’motley crews’ you mentioned are actually powerful troop types that the lords have carefully handpicked from the wilderness Recruitment Offices."
After hearing Li Hua’s explanation, Lin Kong and the others set aside their disdain and began to observe more seriously. Sure enough, they noticed that many of the bizarrely dressed troops did indeed possess a subtly formidable aura.
After waiting for about another half-hour, a few more lords arrived one after another, bringing the total force at the gathering point to nearly one hundred thousand.
Just then, a messenger walked over and spoke to Li Hua.
"Lord Li Hua, the other lords have all arrived. My master invites you to join them to discuss the battle plan."
"Alright, I’m on my way." After speaking, Li Hua turned to Lin Kong. "Do you want to come along and see?"
"No need, thank you, Lord Li. Please, go on ahead. We’ll be fine here," Lin Kong declined. "Our team is out exploring for large zombie graveyards. This is a perfect chance for us to observe everyone’s valiant efforts and gather some information for our territory’s future battles with them."
"Very well, I’ll take my leave then. You can watch from here." Li Hua departed and walked with the messenger toward the front of the assembly.
Their words drifted back from a distance.
"Lord Li, whose soldiers are those?"
"An exploration team belonging to another lord. They happened to arrive in my territory today, so they tagged along to watch."
"Why don’t they look human?"
"Don’t worry, I already asked their lord on the world channel. They’re confirmed to be his subordinates."
...
Ten minutes later, the army set out, marching east.
Lin Kong and his team followed at the very rear of the formation.
After marching for about ten kilometers, the army reached its destination: the edge of a small swamp. The swamp was already dotted with earthen mounds, making the large graveyard placed there extremely difficult for an ordinary person to spot. The lord who found it was truly a capable individual.
Upon arriving at the graveyard, the troops took up their positions under the arrangement of their respective commanders.
Since Lin Yu had already shared information about zombies, everyone knew they carried a potent corpse poison. To minimize losses, the front lines were composed entirely of Shield Soldiers.
The difference was that some Shield Soldiers carried only an oversized shield, while others also wielded weapons.
Then, the Mages holding Magic Staffs began to cast their spells on the area where the graveyard was located.
They were casting an earthquake spell. As the Magic was released, the ground began to shake, and layer upon layer of soil started to press in on the subterranean graveyard.
As the ground trembled, the large graveyard, of which only a few grave mounds had been visible, was slowly pushed up from the earth, exposing the zombies slumbering within.
The zombies, very unhappy about having their sleep disturbed, opened their mouths wide, bared their sharp teeth, and let out a furious roar before staggering toward the lords’ formation.
These zombies on the uppermost level of the graveyard were all basic zombies (Walking Dead). Their movement speed was slower than a normal person’s, and while their physical defense was stronger than when they were alive, it was only equivalent to a normal person wearing leather armor.
Seeing these slow-moving zombies, the Crossbowmen within the formation took action. They dipped their bolts in Holy Water and fired at the Walking Dead.
The defense of the Walking Dead was completely useless against these specialized attacks; a single volley was enough to fell them all.
Lin Kong wasn’t the least bit surprised by the appearance of Holy Water. After the information about zombies was released, people began selling Holy Water at high prices on the market. Lin Yu had also sold some diluted Life Spring Water.
The diluted spring water was much more effective than Holy Water, so he priced it slightly higher. As a result, it didn’t sell as well as the Holy Water, but some people believed that you get what you pay for and bought a considerable amount of the diluted Life Spring Water from him.
"Rose, what’s the status of the Death Energy? How effective was that Holy Water?"
"The part struck by the arrowhead dissipated a little, but most of it was absorbed by the zombies underground. Hmm, they’re about to come out."
The next moment, a roar even louder than before came from underground, and higher-level zombies appeared.
After this group of zombies appeared, they faced the impregnable wall of shields before them. With no intention of forcing a direct confrontation, they split to the sides, intending to bypass the front-line Shield Soldiers and attack from the flanks.
As they moved, the front-line Shield Soldiers remained motionless, with no intention of changing formation, while the Crossbowmen in the rear continued their volley fire.
This batch of zombies was much stronger than the previous Walking Dead. At the very least, their Defense Power was higher; they weren’t taken out in a single wave. Instead, they endured three or four volleys from the Archers. Their speed was also much greater—they could run now, which was a huge improvement over a slow shamble.
By the time they reached the army’s flanks, this batch of zombies was casually cut down by the troops stationed there.
Then, more of these enhanced zombies continued to emerge from the graveyard, only to be killed in turn. This cycle repeated many times, as if the zombies were being given away for free.
Watching the zombies being so easily dispatched, most of the lords at the rear of the formation began to laugh happily.
"These zombies aren’t as strong as the guides said. Isn’t this pretty easy?"
"Hahaha, there’s strength in numbers!"
...
Only Lin Kong’s group wore grave expressions. Rose could sense that most of the energy from the slain zombies was being absorbed by the zombies at the very bottom of the graveyard.
If this continued, they might end up nurturing the graveyard’s Zombie Commander into a Legendary-grade Zombie King.
After an unknown number of waves, the graveyard finally stopped spawning enhanced zombies.
After a few minutes of waiting, several towering figures emerged from the graveyard, surrounded by a group of even stronger zombies—Armored Corpses.
As soon as they appeared on the surface, those giant zombies grabbed the nearby Armored Corpses and hurled them toward the formation.
