Global PvP Tower: I Can Infinitely Merge My Units
Chapter 135: Hidden
Logan got up and walked to the bow.
The dog did not move while he came. It sat with its spectral tail flat against the deck and watched him the whole way.
When he crouched in front of it, it did not shove its head into his hand the way the other nine always had.
"You want to go," he said.
It did not answer, because it was a dog.
"You did not want to go before. At the salt plain. You put your head on my chest and stayed there."
The tail moved once. Then it went still again.
Alice had come up behind him.
"Something changed," she said.
"Yes." Logan looked at the dog for a long moment. "Nyriel. How many Warlords are on the map?"
The constellation spread out overhead.
```
[ Warlord signatures detected: 19 ]
```
Logan stopped breathing for about a second.
"Twenty," Alice said slowly. "There are twenty left. The announcement said twenty."
"The announcement counts what is alive." Logan did not look away from the dog. "Nyriel counts what it can see."
....
It took Alice a moment, and then her face went pale.
"One of them is hiding."
"One of them has been hiding the whole match." Logan put a hand on the dog’s head, and this time it leaned into him.
"Somewhere Nyriel cannot reach. Somewhere no player ever found, because nobody ever got close enough to the end to notice the numbers did not add up."
’The record is eighty-seven.’ He felt it settle in, cold and complete. ’Maybe that is why. Maybe every match that ever got close ran out of Warlords it could find.’
"Without the dog we would have hit ninety-nine and stopped," Alice said. "Forever. And never known why."
"Ninety badges instead of ninety-one." Logan scratched behind the dog’s ear. "And one Warlord still alive when we left."
"It knew." Alice crouched down beside him. "Since the salt plain. It knew it was the only one who could find it, and it knew it only gets to open once."
The dog looked from one of them to the other.
Then it stood up.
---
Logan did not make it wait for him to point.
"Go on," he said quietly. "Show us yours."
The last Chaos PsyDog spun twice, the way all ten of them had spun. Then it barked once and tore a hole in the air.
The portal held steady. Through it Logan could see a cavern of pale green crystal, deep underground, the walls humming with something that bent light the wrong way.
The dog stood at the edge of it and looked back at him one more time.
Then it faded.
It did not die, exactly. It had never been solid enough to die.
It simply thinned, the way the other nine had thinned after they spent their markers. Soon there was only a faint shimmer on the deck where it had been standing, and then not even that.
```
[ Chaos PsyDog: marker opened. ]
[ All Chaos PsyDogs have been spent. ]
```
Alice put her hand flat on the empty deck for a moment.
"Ten for ten," she said. "Every single one of them found something."
"Every single one." Logan stood up and looked at the portal. "Let us not waste the last one."
---
The cavern ate Nyriel’s constellation the moment they stepped through.
That was the trick, Logan understood immediately. The crystal did not hide the Warlord. It hid everything, and the Warlord had simply sat inside it for the entire match while every scanner in the world looked straight past.
```
[ Warlord: Vessanthe the Unseen ]
Mythic | Level 40
HP: 19,400,000 / 19,400,000
Attack: 9,100
Speed: 7,800
Constitution: 8,600
Arcane: 9,400
```
"Nineteen million," Alice said. "The crater one was fourteen."
"The crater one was fourteen at thirty percent." Logan drew. "This one is eighty."
It came out of the crystal wall already moving.
It was fast and it hit like a falling building, and the first thing it did was put three Mythic-plus units through the far wall of the cavern before Storm’s Herald had finished spreading.
Kindred Wellspring caught two of them.
The third did not get up.
```
[ Mythic+ combat unit lost. ]
[ Field army: 34 Mythic+ ]
```
---
The machine adapted, because adapting was what it had learned to do.
Vulkarn’s Ore Grubs could not move crystal, so Xairon built anchors instead and pinned the thing’s footing to the cavern floor. The Avatar went in at +40% and took the next strike for the units behind it.
Billy found the gap Nyriel could not see, because Billy’s Void Motes did not need light to find anything.
Solveig’s aura climbed with every wound, and there were a lot of wounds.
Logan did not trigger Grimbound Threshold. He did not need four thousand stacks. He needed the one line through the crystal that Vessanthe’s body was built around, and Sword Intent at forty-four percent found it on the third pass.
```
[ Heaven-Splitting Line ]
```
The seam opened.
Alice was already there, because the Accord Sigil had gone warm a half second before Logan swung and she had teleported to the only angle that mattered.
```
[ Arrow Intent: Velocity ]
[ Arrow Intent: Puncture ]
[ Starflow Arts: Death Star ]
```
The arrow went down the seam and into the thing that had been hiding from the whole world.
```
[ Warlord Vessanthe the Unseen has been slain. ]
[ Warlord Badge acquired. ]
```
Nyriel’s constellation came back the instant the crystal stopped humming.
```
[ Warlord signatures detected: 19 ]
```
Nineteen on the map. Nineteen alive.
For the first time all match, the numbers matched.
---
The next seven went fast, because now they could all be found.
The machine ran through them the way it had run through everything since Billy came back, and every Warlord was stronger than the last, and every one fell anyway.
```
[ Eighty-five Warlords eliminated. The remaining fifteen Warlords are 85% stronger, and their badges reward 170% extra Tier Points. ]
```
They lost another unit at eighty-six. Another at eighty-seven.
```
[ Field army: 32 Mythic+ ]
```
Halden took a strike at eighty-seven that should have folded him in half, and did not fold.
He planted the halberd and held the line alone for four full seconds while two units behind him got clear, and when Kindred Wellspring finally caught him, he was still standing.
"Staying standing," he said, when Logan reached him.
"Staying standing," Logan agreed.
---
The eighty-eighth Warlord was nothing special.
It was a tall armored thing on a basalt shelf, a little stronger than the one before and a little weaker than the one after, and it fell in about three minutes like the others had.
What came after it was not nothing.
```
[ Warlord Brannoch Ironveil has been slain. ]
```
```
[ Historical Record Broken ]
[ Highest Warlord elimination count, single match. ]
[ Previous: 87 ]
[ New: 88 ]
```
Alice read it and made a sound Logan had never heard her make before.
"Eighty-eight."
"Eighty-eight."
"Nobody has ever." She stopped and started again. "In every match of this game that has ever run. Nobody has ever killed eighty-eight."
"Nobody has ever had thirty-two Mythic-plus units and a Chaos Sage and a Void Harbinger and you." Logan looked at the panel for a long time. "They had the wall. We had all of this."
Billy landed beside them, looked at the record panel, and grinned so wide it looked painful.
"Boss," he said. "We are famous."
"We are famous," Logan agreed. "And there are twelve left."
---
```
[ Ninety Warlords eliminated. The remaining ten Warlords are 90% stronger, and their badges reward 180% extra Tier Points. ]
```
```
[ Warlord Badges held: 81 ]
[ Field army: 32 Mythic+ ]
```
Alice sat on the rail with the record panel still open, not really reading it.
"Eighty-one badges," she said. "Ten Warlords."
"Ten Warlords at ninety percent above baseline." Logan looked at the map. Ten signatures were still burning, and for the first time they looked genuinely dangerous even from this far away. "And every one we kill makes the rest worse."
"The last one will be near double."
"The last one will be at ninety-five." He closed the map. "The worst thing anybody in the history of this game has ever had to fight."
Alice was quiet for a moment.
"The dog knew," she said finally. "It knew we would get here. It saved itself for this."
"It did."
"I am going to be sad about that dog for a long time."
Logan looked at the empty patch of deck at the bow.
"So am I," he said.
