  1. Black Patches

The interior of the laboratory looked utterly ordinary. Lin Ye was about to open the door, but halfway through reaching for it, he suddenly felt a very faint resistance.

This resistance didn't come from the outside. It was his own body resisting contact with the doorknob.

Lin Ye stopped moving. He didn't understand what was going on, so he decided to first move away from this laboratory.

Just then, someone behind him pushed him.

It was a researcher who looked completely ordinary. Lin Ye hadn't noticed anything wrong with him before.

Lin Ye forcibly controlled his body to move away from the door. The physical body was just external hardware. The brain was his true body.

But several more survivors pushed him toward the door. Their expressions were a bit strange, as if they were carrying out something that absolutely had to be done.

Lin Ye cleanly ejected from the D-Class personnel shell. When he had entered it, he had already designed a quick-escape maneuver.

The D-Class personnel shell crashed into the door. The door transformed into a pitch-black patch. The D-Class personnel shell met no resistance whatsoever and naturally merged into that expanse of darkness.

Lin Ye didn't flee. The human brain had its limits. Even after Alienation, he couldn't move the way a normal living creature could.

The special spiritual imprint had not Alienated the brain into a sturdy structure. He could now only crawl slowly along the ground, and was no match at all for these survivors.

So if he didn't want to touch that completely black patch, he had to find a way to quickly kill himself.

"...What exactly is... going on? What am I doing?"

Su Yue clutched her head with one hand, and with the other suddenly grabbed Lin Ye, then turned and ran.

Lin Ye didn't resist. He didn't understand why Su Yue was helping him. Survivor and D-Class personnel, companion and brain monster. As long as one's head was still relatively normal, one could easily choose the right side.

Gunshots rang out chaotically from behind. Bullets struck Su Yue's body, but she didn't stop. Only after turning the corner did she collapse to the ground.

A massive amount of blood gushed from beneath her. This was a fatal wound. She was about to die.

"I'll give you... I don't know if this is the right thing to do either... Maybe I should trust my companions... but they all seem to be affected by something..."

Unlike Lin Ye, who could start over, Su Yue had only one chance to choose. This time, she chose the 'right' side.

After saying her final words, Su Yue completely lost consciousness.

Lin Ye used his nerve bundles to take the knife Su Yue had handed him. He converted the tip of the blade into light, then used the tip to pry open Su Yue's skull.

Only one conversion was needed. The blade tip appeared in the skull's original position, then wedged open a crack.

Lin Ye replaced Su Yue's brain and began controlling this body. There were several fatal wounds inside the body, but under the nerve bundles' processing, these injuries were quickly alleviated.

Those survivors turned the corner. Lin Ye drew the pistol stuck in Su Yue's waist and emptied the magazine at them.

Both sides were firing. Lin Ye fired with one hand while his other arm shielded his head. Every bullet killed a survivor.

The bullets were quickly spent. Lin Ye tossed the pistol aside and used unimportant parts of the body to block bullets he couldn't dodge. Through light perception, he could sense the trajectory of every bullet.

But there were too many survivors. Su Yue's body had already been riddled into a sieve. Even if Lin Ye could adjust the body, he couldn't make use of a body like this.

'A pity. If there were one more pistol, I might still be able to put up a fight.'

Lin Ye didn't regret saving these survivors. They had clearly been affected by something. This was a very important piece of information.

Bullets kept striking Lin Ye's body. Lin Ye used bone to collide with the bullets he couldn't dodge. As long as he could still move, he could keep holding on.

The gunfire gradually died down. Su Yue's body was nearly shattered by bullets.

Lin Ye didn't eject from this body, nor did he choose to kill himself. He could now only use this body to fight to the very last moment.

Zhao Jie stood behind all the survivors. He faintly felt something was wrong, but he didn't know where the problem lay.

This feeling was torture to him. If he couldn't figure it out, he would feel extremely uncomfortable.

"So why did I move? What exactly am I doing?"

The stifling feeling made it hard for Zhao Jie to breathe. He yanked open his collar and drew the submachine gun stuck in his waist.

"Forget it. Since I can't figure it out, I'll stop thinking about it."

Zhao Jie opened fire on the survivors in front of him. At this close range, it was impossible to miss even if he tried.

"Phew... feels much better now."

Zhao Jie tossed the submachine gun aside and came up to Lin Ye.

"What the hell is wrong with all of you? I'm not on the same side as you."

Lin Ye lay on the ground. He could no longer crawl.

"I don't know either... Maybe it's because they were too noisy."

Zhao Jie slumped down beside Lin Ye. Most people were dead now. He didn't plan on leaving either.

"Good reason. I don't like noise either. I need to switch bodies, so I won't stay here to keep you company."

Lin Ye crawled out from Su Yue's head. Many corpses were piled at the corridor's corner. There was definitely a usable body among them.

Zhao Jie watched Lin Ye crawl out of Su Yue's head. He felt as though he had done something wrong.

Lin Ye quickly finished switching bodies. He rushed toward the exit and put on the Fleshy Monster Main Body's corpse.

But when he returned to the area near that laboratory, the door-like black patch had already disappeared.

Lin Ye tried throwing a corpse at the laboratory's large door. The corpse and the door collided, but neither side showed any change.

"That black door is the core research project here?"

Zhao Jie walked over, glancing curiously at Lin Ye.

"I don't know. Maybe you can go in and try."

Lin Ye had no idea what that black patch actually was. He only knew that thing was a serious problem.

"I'm not going in."

Zhao Jie moved away from the laboratory door.

"Don't move!"

Lin Ye suddenly let out a low growl.

"What? You scared me..."

Zhao Jie froze in place and turned to look at Lin Ye.

He saw a black patch. It had appeared on the wall behind Lin Ye.

But that wasn't the key point. The key point was that there wasn't just one black patch. Many more had appeared farther away. Every few meters, there was one, all exactly the same size.

"What's going on? Can we still get out?"

Zhao Jie was afraid that after barely two steps, he'd step on a black patch.

"Should be fine. Right now the black patches only appear on the walls and ceiling. As long as you don't fall down, you won't touch them... probably."

Lin Ye didn't know either whether these black patches would suddenly change their pattern.

"...I'll scout ahead. If you run into trouble, give me a hand."

Looking at the black patches all around, Zhao Jie just wanted to leave this place as soon as possible.
