Chapter 496: Chapter 495: Voice

Du Yunluo always liked Mu Lianxiao’s voice, clear and bright like the moonlight shining on the ground, and like a spring breeze caressing the face.

When serious, Mu Lianxiao’s tone deepens slightly, each word touching the heart, yet it does not make one feel that his youth undermines his persuasiveness.

During casual conversations between husband and wife, Mu Lianxiao’s tone becomes much more lighthearted.

The smile spills from the corners of his eyes and lips, even his tone is that lively, making Du Yunluo feel much more relaxed.

Sometimes, his voice becomes slightly hoarse, carrying a power that makes the heart race and cheeks flush, swirling around the ears and drilling into the ear canal, sending tingles across Du Yunluo’s scalp.

That’s exactly how it was at that moment.

Du Yunluo bit her lower lip and pouted at him.

Truly becoming more shameless by the day.

"You only exploit that Brother Yan can’t understand," Du Yunluo huffed, "Let him know his father speaks like this, see how you correct him in the future."

Mu Lianxiao chuckled, rubbed his chin against Du Yunluo’s hair, and said, "Teaching him to be good to his wife, isn’t that only right and natural?"

Du Yunluo caught her breath.

No matter if it’s right and natural, when it comes from Mu Lianxiao’s mouth, anything seems too real.

Du Yunluo couldn’t outtalk him; her current temperament couldn’t match Mu Lianxiao’s. If she kept talking, it would truly taint Brother Yan’s ears.

Though Brother Yan couldn’t understand...

Du Yunluo fell silent, half-leaning in Mu Lianxiao’s embrace, sleepiness overtaking her unknowingly.

Mu Lianxiao coaxed her softly, and in her drowsy state, she heeded his words, kicked off her shoes, and lay down beside him, fully clothed, to sleep.

On one side was their son sleeping soundly, drooling sweetly, and on the other, his wife snuggled asleep. Mu Lianxiao gently covered them with the brocade quilt, fearful of disturbing them, he remained still.

Du Yunluo slept soundly until Brother Yan awoke crying, startling her awake.

Outside, the sky had already begun to darken.

Later, Mu Lianxiao too fell into a half-awake state, only awakening fully when Brother Yan kicked him.

Just as he looked at his son, Brother Yan started crying.

Mu Lianxiao intended to pick him up to soothe him, but Du Yunluo already sat up, cradling their son.

"What’s wrong with him?" Not particularly skilled at comforting children, Mu Lianxiao refrained from further complicating Du Yunluo’s task.

Upon touching Brother Yan’s bottom, Du Yunluo knew immediately, saying, "Wet himself. You rest, I’ll have Lady Peng come in to clean him up."

Brother Yan’s cries were loud, Lady Peng hurriedly arrived at the door. When Du Yunluo called for her, she entered right away.

Together with Lady Peng, Du Yunluo changed Brother Yan’s diaper, at which point the little one gurgled with laughter, eyes wide open.

The more Mu Lianxiao looked at his son, the more he liked him, teasing, "Big General of wet pants."

Lady Peng couldn’t help but laugh out loud.

Du Yunluo gently nudged Mu Lianxiao, leaned over to his ear, and whispered, "Weren’t you the same when you were little? Teasing him."

Mu Lianxiao blushed slightly at the ears, yet his smile did not fade.

With Mu Lianxiao needing to recover, meals these days were served on the small table by the Arhat Bed.

After eating and spending some time playing with their son, they finally blew out the lamp and rested.

The next day, returning from the Flower Hall after discussing matters, Du Yunluo saw Mu Lianxiao upon entering the courtyard.

He had someone set up a frame.

Jin Rui wondered, "What is the Princely Heir playing with?"

Du Yunluo stopped in her tracks immediately.

While Jin Rui and the others did not recognize it, Du Yunluo did; it was for planting Yunluo Flowers.

In the backyard of the small courtyard in Lingdong Gui Shu Alley, there was already a small garden, the frames ready-made, needing only to insert the Yunluo flower branches.

It’s different in Shaohui Garden, where the stone tiles needed to be lifted, soil prepared, and new frames set up before flower branches could be inserted.

Just like the previous life, as they had promised when leaving Lingdong.

Returning to Shaohui Garden, Mu Lianxiao would once again plant Yunluo Flowers for her to cover an entire trellis.

In the same spot as in the prior life.

Du Yunluo felt warmth in her eyes and quickened her step, speaking softly to Mu Lianxiao, "You’re not fully healed yet."

As he raised his eyes to her, although it was only February, a fine sweat covered his forehead.

Unbothered, he said with a gentle curve of his lips, "It’s already late February; any more delay and we’ll miss the season for planting cuttings, and we’ll have to wait another year."

Du Yunluo pulled out her handkerchief to wipe his sweat, "Then have someone else handle it, you rest."

Mu Lianxiao’s smile deepened, "The agreement was that I would plant them for you."

Du Yunluo sniffled, she couldn’t sway him, and persuading more would only disregard his sincerity.

She lifted her eyes to the flower trellis towering over her by half, imagining the blossoms of Yunluo Flowers, how each time she woke from a nap during the blooming season, she’d see a small cluster of them sweetly scented at her windowsill.

Compared to the warmth of Shaohui Garden, the atmosphere in Fengyu Courtyard was much more oppressive.

Lian Family’s condition had worsened repeatedly, and the scent of medicine saturated the courtyard from morning till night.

Mu Yuanmou, unable to bear the medicinal smell, left early in the morning and returned late but, considering Lian Family’s feelings, didn’t opt for the front courtyard at night.

Nanny Zhu, carrying a bowl of medicine, consoled Lian Family, "Madam, your health is your own, please don’t fight against yourself.

Since you are ill, it would be proper for the Master to sleep in the front courtyard. At present, he endures the medicinal scent for your sake.

In Baijie Hall, because of Mr. Si, the Old Madam has so far refrained from intervening.

But if you remain unwell, sooner or later, the Old Madam will have her say."

Lian Family’s cheeks had noticeably thinned, and she sighed, "Old Zhu, I understand all the reasoning, and I try not to dwell on what’s upsetting, but my heart feels terribly stifled.

Whenever I think of Lian Yu, I can’t help but cry. Two years gone with no word, says gone and gone, and it feels like my heart is being sliced apart.

Lian Yu is on his way back, surely? A mother knows her child, the closer he gets to the capital, the clearer I feel it.

In my dreams at night, he cries to me.

How could he not cry? He’s so young, unmarried, childless, and there goes the family line..."

Nanny Zhu felt her scalp tingling listening to this, hurriedly urging Lian Family to drink her medicine, worried that if Lian Family continued, she might bring up finding a bride for Mu Lianyu, which would truly be a misfortune.

In rural places, such customs and ways exist.

But here, at the Dingyuan Marquis Mansion, under the eyes of the Holy Emperor and the Imperial Censors, if Lian Family developed any deviant notions, no one here would agree.

Eventually, audible disputes would arise, worsening Lian Family’s condition.

Thankfully, upon drinking the medicine in one go, Lian Family didn’t mention it again, closing her eyes to rest.

Nanny Zhu withdrew, standing under the veranda for a breeze, still feeling unsatisfied, she asked Zhu Shan to keep an eye on Lian Family while she left Fengyu Courtyard herself.
