Got a Gallery in the Wild

I really hate rain. I hated it even before I fell into this godforsaken place. When it rained, I couldn’t see the clear blue sky, and the weather became unbearably humid.
The rainy season was especially awful. It was already hot enough, but the humidity went completely berserk on top of that. It felt like it was going to kill me.
If air conditioners had never been invented, wouldn’t I have melted into a puddle long ago?
Rumble—!!
"What absolutely fucking shitty weather."
I cursed as I watched the torrential rain pouring down so heavily that it nearly blocked my entire field of vision.
I had even prayed for the rain to stop, but what the hell was this?
Instead of answering my prayer, someone had punched a hole in the sky.
This was why I hated gods. I liked religious people, but I hated gods.
’Does that bastard seriously hate me so much that he’s telling me to go fuck myself?’
If so, what a petty bastard. I shook my head.
Anyway, since this was the first rain in almost a week, I had prepared thoroughly.
I put up waterproof covers to keep the oven and furnace from getting wet, and I brought the container holding the fish into the cave.
Unfortunately, I had no choice but to leave the fish traps in the river where they were. It had been raining since morning.
The rain had startled me awake, and I had rushed around taking emergency measures.
"I’ll have to learn the signs that rain is coming."
I had roughly figured out how often it rained. But if I could identify the warning signs, I would be able to prepare much more reliably.
It would be nice if I could rely on common knowledge from my original world, but...
This was the Four Seasons Forest. Ordinary common sense didn’t apply here.
I would have to identify the warning signs unique to the Four Seasons Forest.
’When is this going to stop?’
I gazed outside at the downpour. It showed no sign of letting up.
This storm was on an entirely different level from the last one. The river must have risen tremendously by now.
And as the water rose, all sorts of sea creatures would probably swim upstream.
’What’ll come up this time? Surely it won’t be something like a shark, right?’
It would be best to remain on high alert for a while. I didn’t want to get robbed blind again like last time.
I was blankly watching the endless rain when—
"Keeeeng!"
"Hm?"
An animal’s cry pierced through the pounding rain.
Wondering what was happening, I looked outside the cave.
"Keeeeeng!"
"Keng! Keng!"
"Squeak! Squeak!"
A whole crowd of small to medium-sized animals had gathered outside the cave.
There were raccoons like the one Fast Sloth had butchered last time, along with rabbits, deer, wild boars, enormous rats, and even animals I had never seen before.
Just as I wondered why these creatures were gathered outside, the raccoon standing at the very front met my gaze.
"Keng! Keeeng!"
"Squeak-squeak?"
"Oink?"
I had a bad feeling about this. I cautiously closed the iron gate.
The moment those animals flooded into the cave, the place would descend into chaos.
Besides, there was no telling what diseases those beasts might be carrying.
"Kek! Kek-kek!"
When the raccoon saw me quietly closing the gate, it pointed a finger at me and began protesting.
It seemed to be saying something along the lines of, "We should all help one another survive! Do you only care about yourself, you selfish bastard?!"
My answer was extremely simple.
I casually raised my middle finger.
I had no idea whether the animals understood its meaning, but as long as it made me feel better, that was enough.
’You can’t trust these damn beasts.’
Of course, Fast Sloth—the one who lived in symbiosis with the adorable Wonmo—was an exception.
More importantly, these animals were partly to blame. They should have built their homes sooner.
’Not that I’m in any position to say that after stealing this cave from its original owner...’
Anyway, I wasn’t letting anyone into this house. They were welcome to try forcing their way in.
I snorted and firmly barricaded the cave entrance. Apparently, the raccoon had an idea of its own.
"Keng!"
"Oiiink!"
The raccoon slapped the wild boar on the flank.
The boar immediately began pawing the ground with its hind legs as if preparing to charge.
The moment I saw that, an instinctive sense of unease washed over me.
That bastard was definitely going to charge.
In that case, I had only one option.
Heavy armament.
Those bastards couldn’t get past the iron gate anyway, so I could use it to wage a defensive siege.
"Oiiiiink—!!!"
While I was equipping myself, the boar charged at tremendous speed.
Perhaps it was only natural for an animal that inhabited the Four Seasons Forest, but its speed was extraordinary.
The same went for its size. It was as huge as one of the monsters from an old movie.
However, after surviving in the Four Seasons Forest for half a month, I had learned one important lesson.
Shunk—!!
And that was that range was everything.
Whoever had the longer reach was king.
Before the boar could slam into the iron gate, I drove my aura straight through the center of its forehead.
It might have been a little risky if I were still using the Heavenly Demon’s Sword.
But the weapon I was holding now was the Mithricon Sword.
Its physical size had already grown to ridiculous proportions, and the aura blade produced by the Mithricon Sword was even larger.
Thanks to that, I stopped the boar before it could collide with the gate.
Thud!
The boar collapsed with its forehead pierced through.
The impact sent a tremor and a deafening thud through the pounding rain.
Most of the beasts appeared stunned, apparently never imagining that the boar would die so easily.
Keeping my flame-like aura blazing around the sword, I beckoned with the blade.
"Come at me."
"Come at me, you fucking beasts! Come at me!!"
"Keeeeeng!!!"
And thus began a siege fought across a single iron gate.
Using my overwhelming reach and the gate as a barrier, I fought to keep the animals from getting inside.
Clang—!
I occasionally took some damage from the rabbits and deer, whose kicks were incredibly powerful.
Thank goodness it was an iron gate. If it had been made of wood, it would have shattered long ago.
"Get the hell out of my house!!!"
"Keeeeeng!"
The siege to defend my home finally ended with the death of their leader—the raccoon.
Once the raccoon died, the other animals scattered in every direction.
Still breathing heavily from the unexpected siege, I eventually collapsed onto the ground.
’Seriously, the craziest things keep happening...’
It hadn’t been like this last time. How strange.
Maybe the torrential rain had destroyed all their homes.
I let out a long sigh and looked beyond the iron gate.
Various animals lay dead outside, including the boar I had killed first.
I would have liked to butcher them, but I didn’t have the time.
’And with all this rain, they’ll rot quickly.’
It was a shame, but I would probably have to throw them away.
I could just dig a pit and bury them—the same place where I had buried the gorillas.
Title: Just Fought a Siege
Wild Grylls

These beasts suddenly tried to force their way into my house, so I fought a siege against them.
If the homeowner says no, that means no. What kind of animals try to barge in by force? ;;
└ Heavenly Demon: Hmm. Could you not have shown them a little mercy? If you behave too heartlessly, you are bound to lose the people’s support.
└ Wild Grylls: I’m not living in civilization. I’m in the wilderness ;;
└ Heavenly Demon: Ah, right. I had forgotten. It slipped my mind for a moment.
└ Sword Master: A siege against animals... How absurd. You weren’t injured, were you?
└ Wild Grylls: Nope. I just sliced them apart with aura from a distance, and they all died.
└ Sword Master: It seems to have been strangely effective.
└ What did the animals do wrong? They only wanted shelter from the rain...
└ Wild Grylls: Last time, I saw some raccoon steal my fasting pills. That taught me never to trust those damn beasts.
└ Didn’t Fast Sloth tear that one in half?
└ Wild Grylls: Yeah, yeah. Still better than letting them make a mess of my house.
└ By the way, has anyone ever fought a siege against ordinary animals rather than monsters?
└ Humanoid monsters like orcs and goblins sometimes raid settlements, but I’ve never heard of animals doing it.
└ It has happened. Wolves are the animals that have fought humans most frequently.
└ Why aren’t there any wolves among those animals? You’d normally expect to see some.
└ They’re territorial animals, so maybe they’re somewhere else?
After watching the users converse among themselves, I closed the Gallery.
When I looked outside again, the rain seemed slightly weaker than before.
It would probably stop in about an hour.
’From now on, I should assume it’ll rain roughly once a week...’
Animals come looking for shelter whenever it rains heavily.
I recorded that in my journal.
Completely unaware that I had just fought a grueling siege, Wonmo was sleeping without a care in the world.
Then again, the siege had been entirely unexpected, so I could understand.
Drip— Drip—
The rain stopped roughly an hour later. I looked outside.
The bright sun greeted me as if it had never rained at all.
Thud! Thud!
Not that it helped me much. I still had to go through the trouble of burying all the animal carcasses.
Praying that no earthworms would appear, I dug into the ground.
Fortunately, no enormous earthworms emerged.
"Pwah!"
"...And what are you supposed to be?"
Only a strange mole popped out.
The mole stared at me with its bright, round eyes before hurriedly scurrying away.
Apparently, it had been hiding underground when the sudden downpour flooded its home.
After staring after it in disbelief for a moment, I finished burying the animal carcasses.
’The drainage channels are working properly... I guess the only thing left is to head upriver.’
The river would still be greatly swollen, so there was no need to rush.
I had plenty of other things to do anyway, so taking my time was fine.
’If this happens every time it rains, it’s going to be a serious headache.’
Now I had to consider not only the animals inhabiting the Four Seasons Forest, but the weather as well.
I checked the oven and furnace for damage, then armed myself.
Since I had no idea what might emerge from the swollen river, I equipped the Heavenly Demon’s Sword instead of the Mithricon Sword.
Wonmo was still sleeping peacefully, so I left Fast Sloth behind to watch over him.
By the time I reached the river, I came face-to-face with exactly what I had expected.
Roooooar—!!!
"Goddammit."
I cursed as I stared at the swollen river.
It looked like someone had turned a waterfall sideways.
Naturally, the fish traps I had installed had been swept away without a trace.
Fortunately, there was something to salvage around the riverbank. Several fish were flopping around on the ground nearby.
If I took them back with me, they should be enough to last until I obtained new traps.
’But...’
One fish in particular caught my eye.
Last time, it had been an eel. This time, it was a pufferfish.
Yes, a pufferfish—the kind with a round body shaped like Wonmo’s.
A creature that lived in the sea had somehow been swept all the way here.
’Did it rain over the ocean too? Or what?’
Some species of eel lived in freshwater, so I could understand that much. But the pufferfish was even stranger.
It should have been a species that lived exclusively in the sea, so by what mechanism had it been swept all the way here?
Of course, regardless of the answer, I had no intention of eating it.
Pufferfish were poisonous.
Their poison alone was enough to kill a person. And since this was the Four Seasons Forest, the poison would be worse, if anything—certainly not milder.
’I’ve heard they’re incredibly difficult to prepare too.’
You could get away with preparing an ordinary fish rather carelessly, but not a pufferfish.
They were notoriously tricky to handle. Simply "following along" with someone else’s instructions wouldn’t cut it.
According to the Gallery, countless people had died after watching videos on how to prepare pufferfish and trying it themselves.
Unless you were a professional, it was best not even to touch one.
’Just to be safe, I should send it back.’
Holding my shield in front of me, I gently nudged the pufferfish toward the river.
Apparently feeling threatened, the pufferfish puffed up its body.
Now that I looked more closely, it wasn’t an ordinary pufferfish. It was a porcupinefish covered in spines.
The instant one of those spines pricked me, I would probably be poisoned.
The medicine the All-Father had given me had granted me resistance to poison, but there was still no harm in being careful.
’I’ll send you back home, so hurry up and go.’
I was gently tapping the pufferfish and rolling it along when—
Grrrrrrumble—!!!
An ominous noise came from its body.
Boom-boom-boom—!!!
Its spines literally exploded in every direction.
Fortunately, I had raised my shield the instant I sensed danger, so I suffered practically no damage.
The problem was that it didn’t end there.
Boom! Bang! Bang! Kaboom!
The ejected spines exploded again, releasing clouds of purple mist.
It puffed up its body once, fired its spines twice, and then made those spines explode for a third layer of defense.
"..."
I couldn’t help but marvel at the fact that it possessed three separate self-defense mechanisms.
And even that wasn’t the end.
Sssshhh—
New spines regenerated from its smooth body like a shark replacing its teeth.
The moment I saw that, I freaked out, abandoned my plan to gently push it back, and kicked it as hard as I could.
Splash!
My kick sent the pufferfish sailing directly into the river.
Now it would drift downstream to the lake—or perhaps return to the sea.
"Cough! Cough!"
Coughing violently, I hurried back home.
’How did this happen when I was being so careful?’
This truly was an astonishing place.
