Chapter 334: 334. The Giggling Drunk II

Maisie

How could it be that an entire civilization had not a single good in them and the Goddess had them all condemned?

Even the poor unicorns? I was pretty sure they were extinct now. Maybe the dragons ate them.

My thought went back to the dragon in chains beneath the Council’s dungeons. Maybe if I had been condemned to centuries of starvation, of death, without even a glimpse of hope in sight, I would have lost my moral compass along the way, too.

In the end, good or bad depended on who was telling the story. Didn’t mean if I saw him, I wouldn’t punch him in the gut for giving me a death kiss.

My back crinkled as I stretched, yawning. My gaze flicked to the clock and I gasped. It was past eleven.

Damn. I hadn’t even noticed time fly.

Where on earth was Soren? He was late. Pretty late. He told me he would come. I knew he would. I flicked my pen a little and continued reading, but I had grown too anxious for the words to sink in, and my gaze kept darting to the door and the clock.

When the clock chimed twelve, disappointment sat heavy in my chest and I sulked, staring at my phone. He’d gotten me all excited for nothing.

Goddess, I had even shaved. And then waxed some.

A sudden, loud bang echoed somewhere outside my door, making me jump, followed by a wildly slurred, high-pitched giggle.

"You walked us into the wall, you bloody... eeeeejjitttt," came a voice much too playful, giggly, and chaotic to ever belong to the terrifyingly composed Soren Black.

"Watch where you’re going!" another exasperated voice snapped from the hallway. "I don’t understand. You had only three glasses!"

"Faster metabolisms. Special liquor," slurred the first. "Have you... have you seen my... my box? Pink? It’s got these little pink ribbons."

"You’re holding it, haven’t let it go since you got out of the car!" the second one yelled. "Jesus Christ, you’re high as a fucking kite!"

"Shh," the first shushed him loudly. "Maisie sleeps light. Don’t wake her. We have to be quiet!"

There was a murmur, and first giggled again. "I’m not loud, you’re loud. Besides... I need to find my... huh. Do you know where my wife is, Dale? She smells like..." He paused and then, let out another giggle. "I can’t tell you that. I’ll have to kill you later if I do."

Goddess, it was Soren! And he was with Randall!

I scrambled out of my seat.

"You’re standing right outside her door," Randall muttered. "Now, get off me."

"Oh! Good job, Randall. You found it. Will you sniff me? Aw, come on. Just a whiff. Tell me if I smell like the bar. May won’t like it."

"I am not sniffing you, Black. Get your arm off me or I swear to God."

A slam shook the door, and I heard a pained, "--ow!"

"You have to twist the doorknob first, moron."

I threw the door open and Randall’s hand was held high, poised to knock. His hair was disheveled, his cheeks flushed, but he appeared less drunk than his companion, who was wobbling dangerously on his expensive leather shoes. He had changed into more presentable clothes since the meeting earlier, but in his new navy blue shirt, I saw the hint of my lace panties stick out.

He was holding his nose, eyes watering, and I suspected he had walked into the door.

Violet eyes touched my face and Soren’s face brightened instantly. "May!"

He walked forward and then tripped over the threshold, careening into me. I caught him, wobbling to keep his heavy frame upright. The box in his grasp fell, but he didn’t seem to notice.

"May," he smiled, righting himself as he reached out and cupped both sides of my face, until my lips naturally puckered in his grip.

His cheeks were as pink as a baby’s in the winter and he sighed wistfully, breath heavy with liquor, eyes shinning like precious jewels.

"I was looking for you," he whispered, his voice thick and his smile fell as he wrapped his arms around my waist, crushing me against his chest.

He dropped his face into the crook of my neck, burying his nose against my skin and breathing me in.

"I thought you’d left me again," he slurred miserably against my collarbone, his body going boneless as he leaned all his weight onto me.

I swallowed, rocking back on the ball of my foot to hold him still, lest we fell.

"Your hair is like... so soft," he muttered, plucking at the strands on the nape of my neck. Then he nuzzled me, running his nose up and down my neck with a content sigh. "Where did you go? I only looked away for three seconds. And I never saw you again... Nine months. I looked for you. Why do you never keep your butt in one place?" He reached around me and gripped my butt. "It is a nice butt, though."

Cheeks enflamed, I glanced up at Randall. "I’ll, er, take it from here. Thank you for bringing him."

Randall just looked irritated, peering me down from underneath his nose with the same expression he had at the meeting earlier. The kind that said, ’You are far beneath me.’ "He broke my windshield. I’ll be sending an invoice by morning."

His gaze flicked towards Soren, who was half-nibbling on my skin like biscuits, but his fangs were capped, so it didn’t hurt at all. It was a bit ticklish.

Randall shook his head, a small of sound of disbelief escaping him. Then, turned to leave, but he stumbled. Clearly just as drunk.

What the hell were they drinking for anyway?

"You shouldn’t drive," I yelled after Randall, catching the door. "If you’re half as drunk as he is."

Randall flushed. "I have a driver," he spat in that same condescending tone.

"Great. Get off my porch then."

He opened his mouth, probably to say something rude, and I slammed the door in his face.
