Chapter 1427: Compromise

“Yes, it’s really a good opportunity, everything from the old era is dying, rather than struggling to rescue it, it’s better to use its remains for rebirth.”

Upon hearing Merlin’s answer, Nikola’s eyes brightened up, every inch of his nerves was excited, even his blood was agitated.

“Well then…”

“Sorry.”

Merlin looked up, interrupting Nikola’s words.

“Sorry, we can’t do that, at least not yet.”

“Why!”

Nikola’s voice raised, he didn’t notice his own loss of composure.

“The world isn’t as simple as we imagine, overly advanced technology can instead bring about catastrophic disasters.”

Merlin didn’t get angry, he simply spoke calmly.

Nikola’s expression froze, he stared blankly at Merlin, his body remained rigid for a long while, before slowly relaxing, stumbling back to sit on a chair nearby.

“Yeah, I was a bit naive.”

Nikola muttered softly.

“Many things also depend on the times.” Merlin whispered.

“So I feel very saddened, Teacher.”

“What’s wrong?”

“I always feel like there’s nothing special about me, what I can think of, others can too, so in this long history, how many are there like me, regretting their whole lives with such thoughts?”

Merlin fell silent, he nearly opened his mouth several times, but stopped himself each time, even Merlin himself didn’t know what to say, it seemed all he could do was watch Nikola’s desolation.

As a scholar, Merlin thought he should be able to understand Nikola, not to mention that he’s his student, but his emotions didn’t fluctuate much, and this seemed to be the difference between the two: Nikola still had a fiery spirit, whereas Merlin didn’t know when he had already compromised with this world.

“I think… things aren’t that bad yet.”

Merlin spoke, breaking the silence.

Nikola slightly raised his head, his eyes bloodshot, as a member of the Perpetual Motion Pump, he had been assisting Merlin these days, dealing with the maladies afflicting Old Dunling.

“All the root sources of the problems are the Inexpressible, it’s always lurking in the shadows, watching us.”

Merlin found amusement in what he was about to say, like the mad words of a mental patient, talking about an impossible future.

“But if… if we could kill it, completely exile the Inexpressible, then there would be no restrictions.”

Nikola’s expression also calmed down, he asked.

“Do you think we would completely exile it?”

He shook his head, although he had only recently learned all this, Nikola had already felt the terror of this formidable enemy from the brief narration.

“It sounds hopeless.”

“That’s where you’re wrong, Nikola,” Merlin’s voice carried a hint of laughter, “You have to at least try, right?”

“What if? What if we really do exile it? Then all our dreams will come true.”

A bitter smile slowly crept onto Nikola’s stiff face, he shook his head and asked.

“So should I pray to Holmes now, hoping this guy really can exile it?”

“I think you might as well bribe him, prayers are useless, he himself is a priest, he knows exactly what gods are.”

Merlin made a strange joke.

…

“Achoo!”

Lorenzo sneezed forcefully, rubbed his nose, and huddled more tightly, burying himself deeper.

“Caught a cold?” Red Falcon asked, “Demon Hunter catching a cold, I always thought the word disease was irrelevant to you guys.”

“Who knows.”

Lorenzo couldn’t be bothered to think about it, in the warmth, people’s thoughts become sluggish, he felt like a snowman gradually melting, spreading out over the floor and seeping into the ground…

“By the way, where’s Watson?”

Lorenzo murmured under his breath.

He suddenly realized he hadn’t seen Watson for many days, the consciousness of forgetting her fleeting, they’d usually chat a bit, but recently she’s been too quiet.

Lorenzo wasn’t worried about Watson, after Roger and Edlen’s deaths, she was closest to Ascension, there are very few things in this world that could threaten her, except perhaps Lorenzo’s cunning teacher, Lawrence.

But even so, Lorenzo still felt Watson could take care of herself, she was strong, far stronger than Lorenzo had imagined, especially since she carried the Echo of the End.

It’s a weapon for killing enemies, as much as a blade for self-slaughter.

Watson’s strength made many uneasy, even Lorenzo felt this way, although he trusted Watson, she was indeed ascending, and no one knew if she’d walk the same path as Roger, suffering erosion and corruption.

She herself understood this, battling darkness means inevitable intrusion, so when formulating the Mechanical Deity, Watson chose to become the Sword Holder herself, letting the Echo of the End protect her, and if she’s eroded and corrupted, this blade would save her from the darkness.

By means of death.

It sounds cruel, but both Lorenzo and Watson easily accepted this, as Demon Hunters they were used to dealing with such matters, to Watson, it was merely another form of the Silver Binding Bolt.

Power needs to be controlled, to be restrained.

“Probably busy.”

The thought came to Lorenzo’s mind, his rest was thanks to Watson’s efforts, she replaced Lorenzo, traversing through the Gap, handling many affairs and planning everything ahead.

Her busyness earned Lorenzo a vacation, allowing him and Red Falcon to decay in the dark together.

Lorenzo appreciated Watson’s busyness, thanks to her, he finally got some long-awaited rest, this feeling of wasting time, Lorenzo really liked.

The sound of knocking echoes, Lorenzo turned his head and said to Red Falcon.

“Go get the door.”

Red Falcon shook his head, clutching the blanket tighter, curling himself into a ball.

“Hey! Stop playing dead.”

Lorenzo shouted a few more times, but Red Falcon didn’t respond, after a pause, a furry leg stretched out from the blanket, kicking over Red Falcon’s sofa, he fell to the ground like a mouse uncovered from its nest.

“Lorenzo you dog!”

Red Falcon cursed angrily, grabbing the blanket, but it was already too late, the biting cold seeped in, chilling him to the bone.

The house was freezing, the kitchen pipes had frozen over, the only warm place left was beside the fireplace, leaving there was torture for Red Falcon.

But what could he do, under the roof, you have to bow your head, especially since he couldn’t beat Lorenzo, if he provoked him, who knows, this guy might really kick him out.

“Okay okay! I’m coming! Stop knocking!”

Red Falcon grumbled impatiently as he opened the door, the icy wind rushing in made him shiver.

“Ah? It’s you, what’s up?”

Red Falcon said.

“Who is it?”

Came Lorenzo’s voice from behind.

“It’s me, Mr. Holmes.”

The old butler walked directly into the office, calling out to Lorenzo, the familiar voice surprised Lorenzo, “Why are you here?”

Faced with Lorenzo’s question, the old butler seemed even more surprised.

“I came to take you both to the party.”

“Huh? Party? Today?”

Lorenzo flipped over, riding on the sofa with a look of confusion.

“Didn’t you forget? I sent you an invitation.”

The old butler seemed annoyed by Lorenzo’s expression.

“Invitation?”

Lorenzo appeared even more puzzled, and just then, Red Falcon in slippers kicked a few times at the mailbox outside, opened the frost-covered metal plate, and took out the hardened letters.

“You mean this?”

Red Falcon glanced at Lorenzo and the old butler, under their scrutiny, he felt small and helpless.
