Gun of Ashes
Chapter 1450 The Unlucky Ones
In the vast and spacious workshop, the piercing noise was incessant. Along one side’s tracks, Armor of Original Sin hung, dragging them into the preparation platform ahead. Beneath them lay several rail tracks; the modified Armed Iron Serpent had long awaited here, the compartments disassembled, replaced by cold frameworks, lifting one Armor of Original Sin after another arranged upon them.
Like an automated assembly line, once the assembly is completed, technicians signal toward the command platform. They open the heavy gates, then the Armed Iron Serpent slowly sets off, dragging the heavy armor towards the next destination.
“Continue!”
A voice was broadcasted, accompanied by the chaotic sound of electricity. A new round of Armed Iron Serpent entered from the other end of the workshop, waiting for assembly, then departing.
Since the Thunderous Cape was injured at Old Dunling, it has been maintaining full-speed rotation, working in shifts to keep this place in constant operation. Handling Merlin’s requests now also became handy.
The complex mechanical facilities operated stably; crude oil was refined and processed into flammable lacquered antimony, then injected into tanks marked with warnings, stacked together, and transported centrally.
They were accumulating power as if to ignite another war.
“How’s the preparation?”
Merlin walked into the iron-gray courtyard, the air was turbid and stuffy, filled with the smell of rust. Merlin donned a mask, which made him feel somewhat better, then amidst the rumbling noise, the technician in charge here walked over to greet him.
“Ready anytime.”
The technician who welcomed him extended a hand and shook Merlin’s firmly.
“Long time no see, General.”
Merlin scrutinized the guy before him, then said with slight surprise.
“Ah? It’s Aika, I thought you died in that storm.”
“How could it be? I was transferred here long ago,” Aika replied with a slightly puzzled look, “you haven’t forgotten me, right?”
“I wouldn’t… Who’s that?”
Fortunately, Merlin had a poker face, plus wearing a mask, he perfectly hid his embarrassed expression and tried to divert the topic.
Aika paused for a while and sighed helplessly.
Merlin seemed young, but those who interacted with him knew he was actually an old man. As the technical chief of the Perpetual Motion Pump, he’s guided many technicians and has dispatched them one by one. He’s interacted with too many people, and Aika was not special, being overlooked was normal.
Though normal, Aika still felt somewhat displeased.
“They?”
Aika followed Merlin’s direction and glanced at the two behind him. Judging by their attire, they seemed not to be technicians.
“Those two?” Aika said, “they are drivers, because of their good performance during the previous storm, they’ve been assigned to this operation.”
“Dort.”
“Gerri.”
The two reported their names and saluted Merlin.
“Hmm, got it,” Merlin nodded, then said, “just proceed according to our plan, the earlier we depart, the better.”
“Alright, here’s the equipment list we’ve dispatched, along with some important weapons…”
Aika picked up a form and began to introduce it to Merlin, murmuring for quite a while, finally asking.
“There’re still some I’m not sure if you need…”
“There’s no need for thriftiness at this moment, equip whatever can be useful,” Merlin immediately interrupted, “This might be the final war, no need to hold back.”
Aika raised an eyebrow, replying.
“Hmm? Okay.”
“Once you’re ready to launch, take the Iron Serpent to the port, we’ll be waiting for you there.”
“Will you be accompanying us?” Merlin asked again.
“How could I? Although I’m not clear about your specific actions, needing so much equipment suggests it’s a Hell-like war scene, isn’t it,” Aika glanced at the form, mentally prepared, but still shuddered involuntarily, “I can’t go, I’m still needed here.”
“Looking at this, you two really are unlucky guys.”
Aika said while looking at Dort and Gerri.
In the Purification Mechanism, due to the limited number of War Airships, controlling War Airship drivers didn’t require many, their numbers always remained low, coupled with being high above, rarely directly confronting demons.
Yet in that storm, erosion inside Old Dunling stirred an invisible whirlwind, most drivers were affected, even after anti-meme purification, many remained with various sequelae.
This time they will venture deep into Seven Hills, directly confronting the Well of Ascension, no risks are allowed to exist, especially in such a crucial position as the European Driver.
During the personnel selection, Merlin picked out those with inherent strong willpower and some resistance, after several rounds of selection, Dort and Gerri caught Merlin’s attention and were transferred here.
“Unlucky guys? Us?”
Dort and Gerri exchanged a glance. In fact, even by now, they were still unsure about the mission they’ll execute.
“Speaking of, what exactly do you need us to do?”
Gerri asked tentatively; he was curious and anxious. As an ordinary driver, he barely had the chance to meet someone like Aika in charge, let alone the technical chief Merlin.
Feeling honored was one aspect, on the other hand, it was apprehensive unease.
