Chapter 303. Not a Man Practicing a Skill, A Mind Dissecting a Monster

"You’re fighting the sword, not the enemy," Seraphina whispered, appearing inches from his face.

Her expression was one of detached disappointment. "You’re fighting a memory of how you want to fight, rather than what is actually in front of you."

William tried to summon the energy for a desperate parry, his mind screaming at his body to move, to react, to survive.

’Move, damn you! Push through the pain!’ But his body was betraying him.

The Aetherion’s weight, which had felt like an extension of his arm moments ago, now felt like an anchor dragging him into the abyss.

Seraphina’s blade flashed a streak of crimson light in the dying simulation.

The first simulation ended in less than ten seconds.

William’s world spun as he felt the cold bite of her steel severing through his shoulder joint, the sensation of bone grinding against metal before the pain became too overwhelming to register.

He collapsed onto the scorched earth, blood pooling beneath him in the simulated dust, his vision fading to black as the arena dissolved once more.

He had relied too heavily on the Aetherion’s brute force configuration, leaving him completely outmatched by Seraphina’s fluid, lethal transitions between Ember and Ash Stance.

He had been cut down before he could even begin to read the deadly rhythm of her dance.

The world shattered and reconstructed itself before the phantom pain of his severed shoulder could even fade. The scorched earth reappeared, the crimson lightning crackled overhead, and Seraphina stood there again, patient, deadly, and utterly unimpressed.

William gasped as the simulation reset, his lungs burning as if he had actually inhaled the ash of the arena.

’Again,’ his mind screamed. ’Not like that. Never again like that.’

His fingers closed around the hilt of Aetherion, but as the weapon materialized, he commanded it to change. The massive, single greatsword split apart with a metallic shriek, the enchanted alloy rearranging itself with hydraulic precision.

In his hands now were two shorter, lighter blades, the dual-wield configuration. The weight was gone, replaced by a lethal, buzzing agility.

"Better," Seraphina mused, her voice cutting through the thunder. "Shall we see if you can dance, or will you still just stumble?"

"Shut up and fight," William spat, his teeth bared in a snarl.

He didn’t lunge this time; he exploded forward. He moved like a predator, the dual blades humming as he unleashed a flurry of stabs and slashes.

He was faster, his movements more economical, testing the boundaries of his reaction time.

Clang! Shring! Clang!

The steel met in a shower of sparks. Seraphina met his aggression with terrifying fluidity.

She danced between his strikes, her blade weaving through his guard like a serpent. For the first time, William wasn’t just reacting; he was anticipating.

He feinted a high slash with his right blade, drawing her upward, then immediately dropped low, driving his left blade toward her ribs.

Seraphina twisted in midair, the tip of his blade whistling past her stomach by a hair’s breadth. "Faster, William! But still too obvious!"

’Damn it, she’s reading my intent before my muscles even move,’ he thought desperately.

His heart was a drum in his ears, a frantic rhythm that matched the chaos of the blades. Blood simulated but feeling terrifyingly real dripped from a shallow cut on his cheek where her blade had grazed him during a near miss.

The exchange intensified. For nearly sixty seconds, the arena became a blur of silver and crimson.

William was a whirlwind of steel, his dual blades creating a defensive perimeter that Seraphina struggled to penetrate. He felt a surge of adrenaline, the intoxicating high of finally holding his own.

He parried a killing blow, the force of it sending a bone-deep vibration up his arms that made his elbows ache.

’I’ve got her,’ he thought, a flash of dangerous confidence crossing his mind. ’I’ve found the rhythm. She’s leaning left on the transition...’

But he had miscalculated. He had mistaken her adaptation for weakness.

Seraphina’s eyes suddenly flared with a cold, violet light. "You think you’ve learned my song? You’ve only learned the first verse."

Without warning, her entire posture shifted. The fluid grace of the Ash Stance vanished, replaced by something jagged, aggressive, and terrifyingly precise.

She entered the Thorn Stance.

The change was instantaneous. Her movements became erratic, unpredictable stabs that seemed to sprout from every direction like poisoned briars.

She didn’t just move toward him; she exploded through the space between them.

William tried to bring his blades up to form a cross guard, but the Thorn Stance was designed to exploit exactly that kind of rigid defense. Her blade struck his left sword with such concentrated, piercing force that it didn’t just deflect; it skidded sideways, leaving his ribs completely exposed.

"Too slow," she hissed.

Before he could compensate, Seraphina was inside his reach. Her elbow slammed into his sternum with the force of a battering ram, driving the air from his lungs in a wet wheeze.

As he buckled, gasping for breath, she delivered a vicious, spinning kick to his temple.

CRACK.

His skull rattled against the inside of his brain. Stars exploded across his vision.

Blood sprayed from his nose as his head snapped back. He felt his knees give way, his legs turning to water.

"You focused on my speed, but you forgot my reach," Seraphina whispered as she loomed over him like a vengeful goddess.

In one smooth, merciless motion, she brought her blade down in a diagonal executioner’s strike. The blade bit deep into his collarbone, grinding through the bone with a nauseating screech of metal against calcium.

William’s scream was cut short as the simulation reached its breaking point.

The arena dissolved into static. William collapsed back into his meditative posture in the real world, his body drenched in actual sweat, his hands shaking so violently he had to clench them into fists to stop the tremors.

His throat felt raw from the silent scream of the simulation, and his mind was already racing, dissecting every mistake.

’Thorn Stance... she uses the momentum of the transition to close the gap before the guard can reset.’

’I need to stop reacting to where she is and start reacting to where she’s going to be.’

...

The meditation was no longer a state of peace; it was a descent into a private hell. Within the compressed reality of his enhanced consciousness, time became a fluid, treacherous thing.

What might have been twenty minutes in the physical world stretched into an eternity of slaughter and rebirth.

William had stopped counting the deaths. He had stopped counting the times he felt his ribs splinter under her boot, the times he felt the wet spray of his own blood across his face, or the nauseating grinding of steel against his own bones.

He was no longer a man practicing a skill; he was a mind dissecting a monster.

’Again.’

The arena materialized with the same crimson lightning and the same suffocating heat. Seraphina stood there, her lips curled in that same mocking smile.

"Still so eager to die, William?" she asked, her voice a silken threat.

"Not today," he growled, though his voice sounded hollow even to himself.

He didn’t wait for her to move. He didn’t even wait to settle into a formal stance. He charged, but this time, his mind was a hyperfocused lens.

He wasn’t looking at her blade; he was looking at the microtremors in her shoulders, the minute shift in her weight, and the way her pupils dilated just before she changed her cadence.

’There.’

As she lunged with an Ember Stance strike, William didn’t retreat. He leaned into the danger, his dual blades spinning in a desperate, controlled arc.

The blades met hers with a shower of sparks that burned his retinas. But instead of focusing on the impact, he felt the hiccup in her movement, that infinitesimal pause, the heartbeat of stillness that existed between her stances.

’She hesitates for three milliseconds when shifting from Ember to Ash,’ his mind cataloged with cold precision. ’Three milliseconds of vulnerability.’

"You’re watching too closely," Seraphina warned, her blade whistling past his ear, close enough to slice a thin line of crimson down his cheek. "You’re analyzing the paint while the house burns down around you!"

"Then let it burn," William roared.

He unleashed a brutal counteroffensive. He stopped trying to win the fight and started trying to map it.

He provoked her, deliberately leaving openings to force her to transition. He took a shallow cut to the forearm, feeling the warm sting of blood, just to see how she moved into the Ash Stance.

He took a punishing blow to the stomach that left him retching, just to study the angle of her thorn-stance approach.

Clang. Crack. Shatter.

The violence became rhythmic. He was learning the language of her slaughter.

He learned that when she closed the distance during an Ember opening, she favored a thirty-degree diagonal approach, favoring her right side to maximize her reach.

He learned that her Ash Stance wasn’t just smoke; it was a feint designed to draw a wide swing, leaving her hip exposed for a split second.

’This is the rhythm,’ he thought, his consciousness screaming as Seraphina’s blade drove through his shoulder once more. ’This is the heartbeat of her death dance.’
