Lia smiled, a slow, radiant expression that seemed to chase away the last of the morning’s shadows. She reached across the table one last time, squeezing his hand with enough pressure to convey everything her words couldn’t: a promise, a plea, and an anchor.

As she rose to gather her belongings, the heavy mantle of responsibility she had been carrying seemed to slip, replaced by a familiar, playful spark that danced in her eyes.

"Try not to enjoy those new punching lessons with Kaela too thoroughly," she teased, her voice dropping to a conspiratorial whisper as she moved around the table toward him. "I don’t want you coming back to the capital with bruised knuckles and a distracted mind."

"I expect regular updates, Instructor Wade... Detailed ones."

"I want to know every tactical shift, every breakthrough, and yes... every time she manages to catch you off guard."

William leaned back, a genuine grin breaking across his face, one that felt rare and precious in the face of the encroaching darkness. "I make no promises about the level of detail, Lia."

"I might leave out the more... entertaining parts to maintain some semblance of professional dignity."

"That will have to be sufficient, I suppose," she laughed, but as she stepped into his space, the laughter died down into something far more hungry and desperate.

She didn’t just hug him; she claimed him. Lia pressed herself against him, her body seeking every inch of contact as if trying to memorize the feel of his muscles through his clothes.

Her arms wound around his neck, pulling him down, while her fingers tangled possessively in the hair at the nape of his neck. William responded instinctively, his arms wrapping around her waist like iron bands, lifting her slightly off her feet to close every remaining gap between them.

The kiss that followed wasn’t the gentle exploration of dawn; it was a fierce, claiming thing. It tasted of salt, heat, and the terrifying knowledge that they might not have this kind of quiet again for a long time.

Her lips pressed against his with a bruising intensity, a silent conversation of stay, remember, fight, and come back. William could feel the frantic rhythm of her heart against his chest, echoing the hammering of his own.

For a moment, the approaching war with Delmore, the political machinations of the Corps, and the looming violence felt like distant echoes. There was only the scent of her skin, the strength of her grip, and the ache of wanting to freeze this moment in amber forever.

When they finally broke apart, both were breathing hard, their foreheads resting against each other in the charged silence. Lia kept her eyes closed for several seconds, simply inhaling him, letting the reality of his presence sink deep into her bones.

"Don’t forget who you belong to while you’re playing soldier," she whispered against his lips, her voice raw with emotion.

William pulled back just enough to cup her face, his thumbs brushing over her cheekbones with reverent tenderness.

"Never," he promised, his voice rough. "Not even for a second."

Lia gave him one last, lingering look, a gaze that held both the warrior she was becoming and the woman who loved him fiercely before she finally stepped back.

With a final, watery smile that spoke of both courage and heartbreak, she turned to gather her things, leaving William standing in the sunlight, already feeling the cold ache of her absence.

...

The private training yard at the palace felt colder than William remembered, the air sharp with the metallic tang of approaching storms and the unspoken weight of the coming conflict.

As they stepped through the arched entrance, the physical space remained unchanged—the same towering stone walls that seemed to trap the heat of the afternoon, the same sun-bleached practice dummies, several of which still bore the jagged, splintered scars of Kaela’s earlier fury.

But the atmosphere had shifted. The silence between them wasn’t the awkward tension of strangers anymore; it was the coiled readiness of two predators assessing the field.

What had truly changed was Kaela. She stood in the center of the yard, the sunlight catching the sharp angles of her face.

Her posture no longer wavered; there was no defensive hunch, no uncertain shift of weight. She stood with a grounded, lethal stillness, her hands secured properly within the deadly embrace of the Tempest Fang gauntlets.

The weapons looked less like equipment and more like extensions of her own body, humming with a suppressed energy that mirrored her own.

William watched her for a moment, his mind racing through the weeks of progress, the blood spilled in training, and the bruises they had both earned. He could see the transformation in the way she held her chin higher, harder, and defiant.

"Today’s different," William announced, his voice cutting through the quiet like a blade.

He stepped into the circle, his own movements deliberate, each footfall measured and heavy. "Everything we’ve done so far... every stance we’ve perfected, and every strike we’ve drilled until our muscles screamed, has been nothing but scaffolding."

"We’ve built the frame, Kaela. But today, we tear it down."

Kaela’s eyebrows rose, her lips parting slightly as she assessed the sudden shift in his tone. "You sound ominous, even for you..."

"What exactly are we doing?"

"We’re stopping the rehearsal," William said, his eyes locking onto hers with an intensity that made the air between them feel charged with static. "From here forward, we’re not focusing on form anymore."

"We’re not thinking about where the elbow should be or how the hips should pivot."

"We’re focusing entirely on instinct."

Kaela tightened her grip on the Tempest Fang, the leather creaking audibly. "Huh...?"

"Instinct?" she repeated, a challenge flickering in her gaze. "What does that actually mean in practice?"

"I can’t fight without knowing what I’m supposed to do."

"That’s exactly the problem," William countered, already shifting Aetherion into its base configuration.

The weapon groaned as the mechanisms aligned, a low, hungry sound that echoed off the stone walls. "You’re thinking too much."

"You’re analyzing, calculating, waiting for permission from your brain before your body moves."

"In a real fight against Delmore’s dogs or worse, that half-second of hesitation is where you die... That’s where your throat gets opened and your ribs get crushed."

He took a step forward, his shadow stretching across the sand toward her. "It means I’m going to come at you unpredictably."

"I’ll switch modes without warning... I’ll change rhythms mid-strike!"

"I’ll exploit every gap in your reaction time as well."

"Your job isn’t to remember a sequence of correct responses."

"Your job is to stop being a student and start being a survivor. You need to react before you even realize you’re under attack."

"Trust whatever your body decides to do before your mind has the chance to second-guess it."

A slow, dangerous smile spread across Kaela’s face. The excitement in her eyes was unmistakable, burning brighter than any fear.

"That sounds considerably more terrifying than our previous sessions," she admitted, her stance shifting into something more primal, more dangerous. "You’re basically saying you’re going to try and kill me."

"Nah, what I’m saying is... I’m going to treat you like the enemy you need to become," William said, his voice dropping to a gravelly whisper as Aetherion’s energy began to pulse around him.

"Real opponents won’t announce their intentions politely in advance."

"They won’t wait for you to find your footing. And neither will I."

He raised his weapon, the tip pointing directly at her heart. "Starting now."
