Harry Potter: Most Annoying System Ever

Chapter 325: The Blinded Titan and The Deepest Vault

The iron cart rattled down the final, spiraling descent, the screech of metal on metal echoing off the jagged cavern walls, before grinding to a heavy, shuddering halt on a narrow stone ledge suspended precariously over the abyss.

Bladehurl unlatched the safety bar and hopped down onto the flagstones, not sparing a backward glance.

Bellatrix, still compressed into the squat, pink-clad form of Dolores Umbridge, stepped out of the cart. With a silent flick of her stolen wand, she levitated the master trunk behind her, leaving the non-magical pink parasol resting on the floorboards of the cart. The waterfall was behind them; the shield had served its purpose.

A low, subterranean rumble vibrated through the soles of her boots.

It was not the sound of shifting tectonic plates. It was a growl.

Bellatrix turned the bend of the narrow stone pathway and found herself face-to-face with the beast Orion intended to claim.

The dragon was colossal.

It was a Hebridean Black, a native terror of the Scottish highlands, easily forty feet from snout to tail. Its scales were rough, jagged, and as black as obsidian, absorbing the dim light of the phosphorescent moss clinging to the cavern ceiling. Its wings were vast and leathery, resembling those of an enormous bat, and dark, razor-sharp ridges ran down its spine like a row of axes.

Yet, as Bellatrix approached, the sheer, visceral cruelty of Gringotts security became horrifyingly apparent.

The dragon was heavily, brutally scarred. Thick, blackened burn marks and lacerations crisscrossed its underbelly from decades of abuse. A massive, jagged scar tore straight across the left side of its skull, leaving its left eye clouded, milky, and permanently blinded. Heavy, runic-engraved iron chains bound its hind legs and neck to massive iron rings driven directly into the bedrock, granting it just enough slack to lunge across the chasm, but never enough to fly.

The goblins did not train their guardians; they systematically tortured them into broken, paranoid weapons.

Bladehurl stepped to a small stone pillar near the edge of the chasm. He reached down and retrieved a set of heavy, tarnished brass instruments that looked like hollow, metal rattles—the Clankers.

The goblin began to strike them together.

CLANG-CLANG-CLANG!

The noise was deafening in the enclosed space, a harsh, grating, rhythmic din that echoed like hammer strikes on an anvil.

The reaction from the Hebridean Black was immediate and heartbreaking. The terrifying apex predator did not roar with rage; it let out a pathetic, whimpering hiss, cowering back against the cavern wall, shielding its scarred head with its leathery wings. It had been conditioned through decades of hot blades to associate that specific metallic clatter with unbearable agony.

"Keep back, Madam Umbridge," Bladehurl shouted over the clanking, his voice devoid of sympathy. "Step directly in my footsteps. The beast knows to let the noise pass."

Bellatrix sneered beneath her Polyjuiced skin, stepping over the scorched stone of the bridge, keeping the floating trunk tight to her hip.

A dragon broken by noise, she thought, her fingers itching to curse the goblin. Orion will give it back its teeth.

They crossed the narrow span safely, entering a secluded, cavernous lane lined with ancient, imposing vault doors.

This was the restricted government sector. Unlike the bustling upper tiers, the silence here was absolute, thick with the damp chill of miles of earth above them. Foot traffic down here was practically non-existent; only the highest tier of the Ministry’s executive management held access to these confidential repositories, and those bloated, self-important bureaucrats were far too lazy or cowardly to ever physically descend into the depths. They sent paperwork, not themselves.

Bladehurl led her past several sealed, unnumbered iron doors before stopping before a heavy, circular vault carved directly into the black granite wall.

Above the keyhole, etched into the stone, was: VAULT 162.

"Your key, Madam," Bladehurl requested, extending a long-fingered hand.

Bellatrix reached into her pink cardigan, withdrew the heavy bronze disc bearing the Ministry seal, and placed it into the goblin’s palm.

Bladehurl turned to the door. He pressed the bronze disc into a circular indentation in the center of the granite. The runic sequence flared with a pale, bureaucratic gold light, followed by the heavy, echoing sound of massive internal tumblers grinding against stone.

The heavy door unsealed, swinging outward with a slow, groaning creak, revealing a dark, cavernous space within.

Bladehurl turned back, bowing shallowly as he retrieved the disc key. "Vault 162 is open. As agreed, I shall wait by the cart until you conclude your—"

He never finished the sentence.

Bellatrix did not waste a single breath. The moment the goblin’s back began to turn, her wand cleared her sleeve in a blur of lethal, practiced motion.

Stupefy.

A bright jet of red light exploded point-blank against the back of Bladehurl’s neck.

The goblin didn’t even have time to gasp. His eyes rolled back, his limbs went entirely slack, and he dropped heavily onto the flagstones like a sack of damp flour, unmoving.

Bellatrix sneered, not even bothering to look down at the unconscious teller. She flicked her wand, guiding the master trunk through the open doorway of Vault 162, stepping inside and pulling the heavy granite door half-shut behind them to block the line of sight from the bridge.

She set the trunk down on the stone floor of the vault.

Drawing Umbridge’s stubby wand, she tapped the four brass corners in rapid succession.

"Rule of Orion," Bellatrix whispered clearly.

CLACK-CLACK-CLACK.

The mechanical locks disengaged. Bellatrix stepped back from the hatch, leaning against the cold wall.

From the depths of the expanded space, footsteps echoed rapidly up the wooden ladder.

Orion climbed out of the hatch, vaulting smoothly onto the vault floor. He was dressed in his sharp, midnight-black wool coat, his indigo eyes bright with razor-sharp, kinetic focus.

Bellatrix, however, let out a sudden, ragged gasp.

The Polyjuice Potion’s timer had expired at that very moment.

The grotesque, flabby layers of Dolores Umbridge’s face began to boil and bubble violently. The mousy curls lengthened, turning pitch-black and tumbling wildly down past her shoulders. Her squat, rounded frame stretched, the spine elongating, her waist narrowing, while her cheekbones sharpened into the lethal, breathtaking aristocratic angles of the House of Black.

Within thirty seconds, the pink-clad toad had vanished entirely, replaced by Bellatrix Lestrange, panting slightly as her true form reclaimed her bones.

She looked down at her hideous, stretched-out pink cardigan in pure, venomous disgust, instantly drawing her wand and vanishing the tweed garments into nothingness, leaving her in her sleek, dark under-robes.

She looked up at Orion, her dark eyes flashing with manic pride.

Orion swept his gaze across the open vault, taking in the towering shelves of classified Ministry ledgers, the stacks of unregistered gold bullion, and the unconscious goblin sprawled on the stones just outside.

He looked back at his godmother, a slow, brilliant, completely unhinged smile spreading across his face.

"Well done, Aunt Bella," Orion murmured, his voice rich with genuine, profound admiration. "Truly. You have performed awesomely."

He turned, stepping fully into the center of the confidential chamber, feeling the cold, ancient magic of the bank humming through the bedrock.

"I am inside Gringotts," Orion whispered, his pulse singing with pure, unadulterated triumph.

"This is absolutely perfect."
