Hero’s Debt: The Superhero House Husband
Ch. 43 – The Cure
Durin led Rhys through the heavy oak front door, stepping into an interior that was nothing short of breathtaking. Warm, organic architecture dominated the space—sculpted stone pillars, gleaming polished hardwoods, and subtle, enchanted earth-magics woven into the very masonry. Rhys glanced around, taking in the grand, arching foyer and the rich, museum-quality furnishings. He realized it had been a few months since he’d last stepped foot in their home, and in that time, the couple had completely remodeled the entire ground floor once again.
Damn, it must be cool to be rich, Rhys thought with a flicker of dark, weary humor, his mind briefly straying to the absurd wealth surrounding his retired hero life and his ultra-wealthy neighbors.
They reached the foot of the sweeping, grand staircase. Durin stopped in his tracks, looking down at his boots, his broad shoulders slumped in a posture of quiet defeat.
“Rhea’s upstairs in the master bedroom,” Durin said softly, his deep voice carrying a heavy, muffled weight.
Rhys paused, turning to stare at the dwarf in genuine concern. “Are you... not coming up too?”
Durin’s expression turned deeply sullen, a painful, shadow-filled look crossing his kind eyes. He wrung his leather cap in his calloused hands. “No... Rhea was very clear about that. She... she told me not to come up. She said she didn’t want to see me right now. She said only Rhys better come up, and that I should just wait down here in the living room.”
Rhys stared at the man, a cold, sickening rage burning in his chest. This woman has completely lost her damn mind, he thought, horrified by how utterly Rhea was neglecting her loyal, loving husband. The sheer disrespect of using Durin as an errand boy to summon her secret lover while forcing him to sit downstairs was vile.
“I’ll... I’ll be back down soon, Durin,” Rhys rasped out, though the words felt hollow in his throat.
Reluctantly, as if walking toward his own execution, Rhys began his assent up the carpeted stairs. Each step felt heavier than the last. He reached the master suite at the end of the long hallway, took a deep breath to steady his frayed nerves, and pushed the heavy double doors open.
The sight that greeted him inside was nothing short of extraordinary—and entirely terrifying.
Stretched out across the center of a massive, silk-sheeted king-sized bed was Rhea. She looked absolutely nothing like the bedridden, frail, fever-struck woman Durin had described downstairs. There was no sickness in her form; instead, she radiated the mesmerizing, irresistible flush of an Earth Genasi in full, unbridled heat. Her golden-bronze skin shimmered with a faint, intoxicating warmth, her deep copper eyes glowing with a raw, desperate yearning for release.
The moment Rhys stepped into the room, Rhea’s face lit up with explosive, ecstatic joy.
“Rhys!” she squealed, leaping off the plush bed with fluid, feline grace. She practically threw herself into his arms, wrapping her long, sculpted legs around his waist and crashing her lips onto his in a passionate, breathless kiss that smelled of wild, earthy flora.
Instinctive, razor-sharp guilt stabbed Rhys straight through the heart. The memory of Lira’s trusting, loving smile just across the street flashed violently behind his eyes.
Rhys immediately pried her arms off him, setting her back down on her feet with firm force. He took two steps back, casting a panicked, furious look over his shoulder at the open bedroom door before glaring up at her.
“Are you completely out of your mind?!” Rhys hissed in a harsh, desperate tirade, keeping his voice strictly contained to the room. “What is wrong with you, Rhea?! Sending your own husband across the street to fetch me?! On the one single day off I have to spend with my wife?! Do you have any idea how insane, how deeply wrong this is?!”
He went on, unleashing a torrent of hushed, furious reprimands, laying out the sheer madness of her stunt. But as the sharp words flew from his mouth, Rhys noticed with growing dread that Rhea wasn’t listening to a single word of his scolding. If anything, her expression only melted into something infinitely more starry-eyed and devoted. She looked at him with an overwhelming, almost frightening depth of adoration, completely captivated by the dark, stern authority in his voice—the exact commanding edge of Omen that had brought her to her knees in the first place.
“I missed you so much, Rhys...” Rhea murmured, taking a slow step toward him, entirely ignoring his tirade. “I couldn’t take it anymore. I haven’t heard a single word from you in days... and I haven’t heard anything from Vespera either.”
Rhys paused, his rant faltering as a sudden, sharp realization hit him. She hasn’t heard from Vespera either?
First Ariadne, now Rhea. Vespera had gone completely silent, severing her communication with the women she had weaponized against him.
Part of Rhys wanted to believe it was a blessing. Maybe she’s finally done with her twisted games, he thought glibly. Maybe she got bored and found a new plaything.
Then, like a bolt of lightning, the image of Marcus flashed in his mind. Marcus, glowing with giddy excitement. Marcus, proudly bragging about carrying Vespera to her penthouse. Marcus, showing off edited, scandalous photos of her on his phone.
NO...?! Rhys screamed in the silent, horrified vacuum of his own head.
There is no way, Rhys tried to tell himself, panic clawing at his throat. She’s just using Marcus to get to me, right? It’s all part of her psychological game. Yet a dark, disgusting knot of conflicting emotions twisted in his gut. He didn’t want Vespera—he loathed her with every fiber of his being—so why did the thought of her stringing his innocent best friend along ignite such a bizarre, chaotic storm inside him? It wasn’t jealousy for a woman he never wanted; it was the agonizing realization that if Vespera had moved on to play her mind games elsewhere, Rhys was left entirely trapped in her destructive aftermath, left to manage the obsessive, unhinged lovers she had created.
He looked down at Rhea, who was standing right in front of him now, her deep golden eyes gazing up at him with unyielding, desperate longing.
Without breaking eye contact, Rhea reached behind him, gently pushing the heavy master bedroom doors shut until the brass lock engaged with a sharp, definitive click.
Before Rhys could protest, she reached out, taking his hands and dragging him toward the massive bed. Rhys felt himself falling, lost in a sudden, overwhelming storm of linen, velvet pillows, and soft golden skin.
Rhea pressed herself against his chest, kissing his lips, his jaw, and his neck with soft, frantic devotion, her hands sliding over his shoulders and chest as if verifying he was truly there.
“Rhea, stop...” Rhys gritted out, though his voice sounded raspy, compromised by the sheer, heavy physical presence of the elemental woman over him. “Do you really not feel a single drop of guilt for Durin? He is literally sitting right downstairs in your living room!”
Rhea paused, leaning up to look directly into Rhys’s eyes. Her gaze was completely clear, filled with a raw, terrifying honesty.
“The last few days have been absolute agony, Rhys,” Rhea whispered, her warm breath caressing his neck. “I laid in this bed, waiting and waiting for you to come to me. My body... my whole spirit... it needs you. It craves you. I can’t... I physically cannot let another man touch me anymore. Not after what you did to me. Not even my husband.”
A deep, suffocating wave of a feeling Rhys hadn’t felt in a very long time slammed into his chest: profound, crushing regret.
He felt a surging, blinding anger—not just at the situation, but bitterly, fiercely at himself. He was trapped in a nightmare of his own making, bound by secrets, blackmails, and monstrous desires he had unleashed. Looking at the clock on the nightstand, he knew time was violently ticking away. Lira was waiting across the street. Durin was sitting downstairs. Every second spent in this room was a ticking time bomb set to blow his entire life to pieces.
If I can’t escape this right now, Rhys thought with a dark, ruthless resolve, then I am going to end this right here, once and for all.
With sudden, explosive strength, Rhys gripped Rhea by her waist and flipped her over onto her back.
Rhea let out a soft, surprised squeal of pure glee as her back hit the soft mattress. She looked up at Rhys with utter, starry-eyed love, her chest heaving. Rhys leaned down, pressing a soft, lingering kiss against her parted lips, using his grip to take command of the space.
His hand moved to her large, breathtaking breasts, his fingers sinking into the soft, furnace-warm yield of her skin. Then, with a sudden, sharp burst of physical power, Rhys grabbed the collar of her delicate silk blouse and tore it down the middle with effortless strength.
Rhea was speechless, her breath catching in her throat, her eyes wide as saucers as she stared up at the dark figure towering over her.
Rhys leaned down, his face inches from hers, his eyes narrowing into two piercing shards of ice. The gentle, suburban husband was gone, replaced entirely by the absolute, uncompromising presence of Omen.
“You better savor every single second of this moment, Rhea,” Rhys growled, his low, gravelly voice cutting through the heavy silence of the room like a blade. “Because I am only going to say this once... this is the FINAL, and last time this will happen.”
Rhea’s euphoric expression froze. The dark flush on her cheeks suddenly paled, a look of agonizing concern instantly taking over her glowing face.
“W-What...?” Rhea stammered, her voice dripping with sudden, desperate panic as she stared up at him. “What do you mean... the last time?!”
