Hero’s Debt: The Superhero House Husband

Ch. 78 – The Courtship Token

Shula didn't just reserve the venue. She bought the whole damn thing.

Rhys walked alongside her up the pristine stone pathway, doing everything in his power to keep his jaw from dropping to the floor. You literally cannot make this stuff up, he tried to reason with himself, adjusting the collar of his shirt while trying to project an air of unshakeable indifference.

Her private estate was nothing short of monumental. Situated high atop the grandest hill overlooking the entire metropolitan expanse, the property commanded a sweeping, panoramic view of the world below. Sunlight glinted off polished, gilded archways, and manicured gardens filled with ancient, glowing flora stretched out for acres. As they reached the grand entrance, Rhys found himself staring up at a massive, seamless circular door carved from a solid slab of rare, obsidian-like stone.

Shula paused before the threshold, turned her head slightly back to him, and uttered two simple, melodic words:

"Open sesame."

With a low, vibrating hum that pulsed through the soles of Rhys's shoes, the massive stone door split along unseen geometric lines, sliding inward and expanding seamlessly into the walls.

Dammit, Rhys thought, an involuntary wave of petty envy washing over him. I gotta get me one of those.

Stepping through the threshold, the interior proved to be even more jaw-dropping than the exterior. Pristine marble floors reflected the warm, ambient light of floating elemental sconces. Soaring vaulted ceilings rose into impossible distances, arched with intricate, self-illuminating golden filigree that seemed to pulse in time with the estate's ambient magical core. Rhys paused, his tactical instincts taking over as his eyes measured the sheer dimensions of the entryway versus the outer footprint of the building he had just observed from the driveway.

"Bigger on the inside..." he mumbled under his breath.

Shula let out a musical, delight-filled giggle, her golden eyes twinkling as she turned to face him, her skin radiating a cozy, furnace-like warmth. "Welcome to my abode, my sweet donor," she purred, bowing slightly with exaggerated grace. "Or, as my kind prefers to call it... welcome to my lamp."

Rhys stood astonished. No matter how many centuries-old beings or cosmic warlords he had crossed paths with during his time as Vanguard, Shula somehow managed to continuously surprise him. She closed the distance between them with predatory fluidity, stepping so impossibly close that her warm, intoxicating breath brushed against his lips.

"And I assure you, Rhys..." she whispered, her golden eyes flashing with a wicked, possessive heat, "I have so much more to show you."

She reached out, her fingers lacing tightly through his as she began pulling him down a lavishly decorated corridor—a hallway that, based on the unmistakable silk drapes and fragrant incense wafting from its end, almost certainly led straight toward her private bedchambers.

Rhys glanced around as she pulled him along. The mansion was dead quiet. There was no sign of household staff, no sound of lingering guards, and most importantly, Darius—her husband and Rhys’s old hero comrade, Gideon—was nowhere to be seen.

As they drew closer to the heavy velvet curtain at the end of the hall, a violent, electrifying jolt of memory slammed into Rhys's subconscious.

The time is now.

If he let her pull him past that threshold, his plan would be dead before it even started. He couldn't fight her with brute physical force; his burned-out kinetic cells made that a losing proposition, and her raw Ifrit magic was too overwhelming. He had to outsmart her. He had to play the game on the battlefield where Djinn were most vulnerable: their own rigid, ancient laws of conduct.

In an instant, Rhys dropped the weary, exhausted persona of the helpless house husband. A cold, calculating stillness washed over his face. He reached deep down into his past, pulling on the psychological armor of Omen—his old, classified covert operative alias. His posture straightened, his eyes turned to hardened steel, and a smooth, razor-sharp smile touched his lips.

He dug his heels in, bringing their forward momentum to a sudden, deliberate halt.

"You know, Shula..." Rhys said, his voice dropping into a smooth, commanding baritone that made her freeze in her tracks. "Before we get ahead of ourselves... I would absolutely love to get a proper tour of the house."

Step one.

It was a brilliant tactical maneuver. In Djinn culture, hospitality wasn't merely a polite social courtesy—it was a sacred, binding obligation encoded into their very biology. As ancient beings of elemental order, a Djinn could not refuse a direct, polite request for hospitality from a recognized houseguest without violating their own fundamental code of manners.

Rhys watched intently as the metaphorical gears in Shula's head ground to a screeching halt. A subtle, barely perceptible twitch crossed her brow as the ancient notch of guest-law locked into place within her mind. She desperately wanted to drag him into her bed, but her lineage physically compelled her to honor his request.

Her smile faltered for a fraction of a second before she forced it back into place, though her golden eyes burned with suppressed frustration. "Why... of course, Rhys," she said, her voice tight despite her best efforts to keep it airy. "I would be delighted to show a guest of your standing around my home."

Rhys kept the mask of Omen firmly in place, stepping smoothly alongside her as she redirected their path down the grand central gallery.

As they walked, Rhys masterfully laid on the praise, executing the second phase of his strategy. He pointed out the architecture, complimented the seamless integration of elemental magic into the masonry, and marveled at the decor. And the truth was, most of it wasn't even a lie—the estate was genuinely stunning. The artifacts displayed along the marble pedestals were so ridiculously rare and ancient that even with Rhys’s extensive planetary database knowledge from his hero days, he struggled to identify half of them. The ones he could recognize made his blood run cold, leaving him to wonder what terrifying cosmic favors she had traded to acquire them.

"You really have built an extraordinary sanctuary here," Rhys noted smoothly, his eyes scanning the room like a hawk. "Though... I have to admit, it feels a little empty. Where's Darius today? I would have thought my old friend would be here to greet me."

To Rhys’s utter satisfaction, the casual mention of her husband hit a direct nerve. Shula’s shoulders visibly tensed. Her jaw set, and a flicker of deep, awkward discomfort crossed her bronze features.

"Darius is... currently away on a extended league mission across the eastern sector," she said evasively, her tone clipping the edges of her words. "He won't be returning for quite some time."

Rhys’s sharp smile broadened ever so slightly under his mask. Seeing the supreme, ultra-confident Ifrit socialite actually squirm under the weight of her own guilt was a intoxicating shift in dynamics. For days, he had been the one pushed around, blackmailed, and cornered by the powerful women in his life. The tables had finally turned.

“Always did like punishing the guilty, didn’t we?” the dark, raspy voice of Omen echoed smoothly in his mind, stepping in lockstep alongside him down the hallway.

Rhys ignored the internal commentary, keeping his focus entirely on the objective. It was time for step three.

He stopped walking altogether, standing right in front of a high, blank wall of solid white marble. He turned to Shula, crossing his arms over his chest with an air of unshakeable authority.

"This is all very impressive, Shula," Rhys said, his eyes locking onto hers with penetrating intensity. "But let's be honest. You're showing me the surface-level parlor tricks. I didn't come here to see the entry-level decor. I want to see your real treasure. The good stuff. The items you keep under lock and key."

Shula paused entirely, her breathing hitching slightly. A flash of hesitation danced across her golden eyes. Part of her clearly wanted to refuse—to claim that her private vaults were off-limits to mortal eyes. But the combination of Djinn guest-manners, her desire to impress the man she lusted after, and her sheer pride as a collector warred within her chest.

Is she actually acting shy right now? Rhys thought, genuinely curious as he caught the subtle, furnace-hot blush creeping back onto her cheeks.

Doesn't really matter, a voice chimed in his head. Rhys couldn't even tell which internal persona had said that last part—the hero, the Operative, or the demon—but the consensus was absolute.

Unable to resist the urge to show off her supreme glory to the man she intended to claim, Shula finally caved.

"Very well," she purred, her confidence rushing back as she raised her right hand. "If it is my true heart's collection you desire... then follow me."

She snapped her fingers.

SNAP.

The solid marble wall before them shimmered like disturbed water. The stone dissolved into thin air, revealing a grand, spiraling stone archway where no passage had existed a second prior. A cold, ancient draft rushed out from the dark doorway, carrying the heavy, metallic scent of dormant cosmic power.

Shula turned and led the way down. They descended a steep, ancient staircase that wound deep down into the very bedrock beneath the estate, far below the surface of the hill. The ambient magic grew so thick and heavy that Rhys could feel the hairs on his arms standing on end, the residual kinetic force in the air faintly thrumming against his chest.

Finally, the stairs ended, opening up into a staggering, breathtaking subterranean cavern.

It was a jaw-dropping magical vault glowing with an ethereal, golden brilliance. Suspended in mid-air throughout the massive underground expanse, held perfectly still within individual bubbles of shimmering golden forcefields, were hundreds of her most prized, dangerous, and legendary possessions. Cosmic weapons capable of leveling cities, ancient forbidden grimoires, frozen elemental cores of extinct stars, and forgotten crowns of fallen galactic empires drifted lazily through the subterranean air like a constellation of absolute power.

Rhys’s sharp, tactical eyes scanned the floating array with rapid, lethal precision, filtering through the overwhelming display of cosmic weaponry.

And then, right in the dead center of the cavern, floating inside a modest, faint golden orb... Rhys spotted it.

The relic he had been looking for.

It was a small, unassuming, hand-carved figurine of a cat. It was crafted from polished dark mahogany, with two unpolished, rough-cut green stones set into its face for eyes. To anyone else in the universe, it looked like a worthless, crude wooden trinket—a stark, bizarre contrast to the apocalyptic weapons floating around it.

But Rhys knew its true weight.

It was the sentimental courtship token he had personally helped Darius track down through the black markets years ago—the very item Darius had presented to Shula to win her hand in marriage.

Rhys’s jaw set into a firm, unshakeable line as he locked his eyes on the wooden cat. The trap was fully set. Now, it was time to spring it.
