Chapter 119 — Believe in Your Talent
Nicolas Flamel’s words won Perenelle’s approval.
She glanced at Nicolas, then looked at Vesey pleadingly.
"Vesey, I know I’m forcing you a little, but if you don’t become his student, he might really commit suicide.
"After I left, he wanted to follow me for a while. I didn’t want him to become a ghost and be trapped here forever.
"Will you help me?
"Believe in your talent!
"This is the first time in all these years that he has been so determined to take a child as his student. I know you can definitely do it, as long as you’re willing to try!"
Perenelle spoke earnestly.
Although it was a little like emotional blackmail, it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing.
After all, this was exactly what Vesey had planned.
Of course, she couldn’t agree too quickly.
She appeared to struggle with the decision for a while before finally saying that she could give it a try.
"But if I really don’t have the talent, you can’t commit suicide.
"No matter what happens, I’ll help you find a suitable heir. Will you promise me that?"
Vesey asked seriously.
Nicolas stubbornly shook his head.
"You must be the only suitable heir.
"If you can’t do it, I’ll kill myself directly. It’s up to you!"
Vesey was completely helpless.
After all, she was now carrying the hopes that Nicolas had placed on his entire life’s work.
Finally, she nodded firmly.
"But can I go back first?
"I’m afraid everyone is worried about me..."
She spoke sadly.
Of course, Nicolas wasn’t willing to let her leave so soon.
After finally finding a suitable successor, he couldn’t wait for Vesey to begin learning from him immediately.
But he obviously didn’t want to force her to stay either.
Nicolas didn’t want to become a bad person in Vesey’s eyes.
So he thought of an idea and immediately took her outside the manor.
"I’ll open the door for you!"
He said with a serious expression.
He cast a spell and even asked the house-elves in the manor to help.
To his delight, the door really was sealed, just as the diary had described.
He couldn’t contact the outside world, and the outside world couldn’t contact him.
Not even the house-elves could leave.
The manor was completely isolated.
Nicolas pretended to be helpless.
"I don’t know why, but the manor has been sealed. No one can get out now."
He had expected Vesey to become angry.
But she didn’t.
Instead, Vesey looked guilty.
"It’s all my fault.
"It must have happened because of something I touched when I came in..."
Nicolas was secretly delighted.
Instead of comforting her, he seized the opportunity to say,
"Since it’s your responsibility, shouldn’t you make it up to me?"
Vesey froze.
Does Nicolas Flamel like young girls?
She pretended to be confused.
"What do you need me to do?"
Nicolas suppressed his laughter.
"You need to start learning alchemy.
"If you want to help me, you have to learn alchemy first. Otherwise, you won’t be able to help me with anything.
"Besides, you owe me a favor now. Whatever I ask you to do in the future, you have to agree unconditionally!"
Vesey breathed a sigh of relief.
So it wasn’t that he liked young girls.
If the old man really had such interests, she’d have to report him to the authorities for indecent behavior!
She guessed that the favor Nicolas wanted was related to keeping her alive in the future.
So she didn’t refuse and agreed immediately.
Satisfied, Nicolas Flamel took Vesey into his study.
He selected dozens of books for her and told her to study them one by one.
Then he left.
Vesey stared at the books in silence.
An ordinary person would probably cry upon seeing this many books.
There were simply too many.
Fortunately, she had Energy Points.
She spent dozens of Energy Points and quickly absorbed everything contained in the books.
Vesey discovered that she now seemed to have a basic understanding of alchemy.
For example, the flowerpot on the study windowsill was actually a surveillance device.
It was even mobile.
It could move around and observe Vesey from different angles, just like an ordinary magical plant.
It was simply incredible.
Vesey quietly examined everything else in the study.
Whether it was the cup used for drinking water or the fireplace burning brightly, they all seemed to be alchemical creations.
She didn’t know what their specific functions were, but she now understood one thing.
Alchemy was truly amazing.
But that was about as far as her understanding went.
Nicolas called this place a study, yet there weren’t actually any books in it.
He had only given her those books.
She didn’t even know where he had gotten them from.
They had simply appeared on the table after he waved his hand.
And after she finished studying them, she had no idea how to make him bring out another set.
She could find Nicolas and ask him for more books, of course.
But she couldn’t exactly tell him:
I didn’t turn a single page or actually read the books, but I already memorized everything.
He’d probably throw her out of the manor.
That wasn’t genius.
That was simply insulting Nicolas’s intelligence.
Vesey didn’t want to ruin the opportunity she’d worked so hard to obtain.
So she decided to sit on the floor and take things slowly.
Holding one of the books, Vesey sat on the ground and pretended to read.
In reality, she was reading a novel inside her mind.
Because of what had happened before, she didn’t dare read tragedies or comedies anymore.
Instead, she found a science-fiction novel and began reading it.
She became completely absorbed.
When someone came to call her for a meal, she couldn’t even put the book down and ended up eating while reading.
Afterward, she sat in a corner, still holding the book and pretending to study.
Several days passed.
She finally finished the novel in her mind.
Vesey was about to stand up and stretch when she accidentally stepped on her own foot.
The corner of her mouth twitched.
Did she just manage to trip over herself?
She complained silently and prepared to get up.
But at that exact moment, the door opened.
Nicolas Flamel walked in.
Vesey hesitated for a moment.
Then she immediately used her Energy Points to create the appearance that she hadn’t slept for several days and had collapsed from exhaustion.
She absolutely didn’t want Nicolas to discover that she’d reached the point where she could simply fall asleep anywhere.
It would ruin her image.
Nicolas had spent the past few days investigating why the manor had become sealed.
He had just finished making some adjustments to the manor when he remembered his new student.
He had originally planned to come over and check on Vesey’s progress.
But before he could even open the door, he heard a loud thud.
He quickly pushed the door open.
Vesey was lying on the floor.
Her face was pale, and even her movements as she tried to get up looked stiff, as though she hadn’t moved properly in a very long time.
Nicolas’s heart tightened.
He immediately cast a diagnostic spell on Vesey.
When he saw the result, his expression darkened.
How long had this child gone without sleeping?
"Are you crazy?
"You’re treating your own body like this?
"You’re only young, so you think you don’t need to take care of yourself. What are you going to do when you’re old?"
He was furious and genuinely wanted to give Vesey a good beating.
Especially when he saw the dark circles beneath her eyes, his anger intensified.
Why had this girl never cared about her own life since she was little?
