Chapter 140 — Death Anniversary Party
Vesey’s words made Harry and the others feel a little sad.
For other people, something like this might be completely ordinary, but for Vesey, it made her feel deeply guilty.
A liar?
How could they use such a word to describe their lovely little sister?
To restore Vesey’s confidence, they all praised her so much that her face turned red.
Hermione even kissed Vesey, making her even more excited and eager to expose her own shortcomings.
Fortunately, reason stopped her.
Time gradually moved into October.
The damp, chilly air began to sweep through the castle.
Vesey caught a cold after coming back from watching Harry play Quidditch in the rain.
She originally planned to brew some medicine herself, but Ginny didn’t look too well either. When Percy went to get Ginny some medicine, he brought back a bottle for Vesey as well.
Vesey really didn’t want to drink it.
She had drunk this stuff the previous year, and afterward her ears had kept steaming.
It was particularly damaging to her image.
But Harry stood beside her, looking at her worriedly, as though he wouldn’t leave until she took the medicine.
As a good sister, Vesey obviously couldn’t refuse him directly.
She gritted her teeth, raised her head, and drank the Pepperup Potion in one gulp.
Then she and Ginny both had steam pouring from their ears.
The two girls sat together, with steam constantly puffing out from beneath their bright hair as though their heads were on fire.
Fortunately, students in this era didn’t have mobile phones. Otherwise, Vesey’s embarrassing moment would probably have been recorded in high definition.
Vesey chatted with Ginny while steam puffed from her ears.
Ginny looked a little downcast.
Vesey knew the reason, so she kindly told her a few stories, which made Ginny feel much better.
By the afternoon, Ginny even greeted Vesey when she saw her.
The next day, heavy rain began to pour over Hogwarts.
It rained for several days.
The water level in the lake rose, and mud was everywhere in the gardens.
Hagrid’s pumpkins were growing extremely well. Each one was practically as large as a greenhouse.
In this kind of rainy weather, Vesey irritably wrapped herself in a raincoat.
She really hated rainy days.
Everything was wet, and even going to Herbology class became inconvenient.
At times like this, she always used Harry as her comparison.
After all, even in weather like this, Wood would still drag Harry to the Quidditch pitch for training.
What’s more, the training lasted until nightfall, and when Harry returned, Filch would catch him and give him another scolding.
Every time Vesey used Harry as her comparison, her mood immediately improved.
To make matters worse, Harry came back one day and told Vesey and the others that he had agreed to attend Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday Party.
He also said that Nick had told him that the leader of the Headless Hunt was really frightening.
Vesey, who had read the original story, of course knew that they wouldn’t be able to eat anything at the party.
She also knew that they would encounter the petrified Mrs. Norris on their way back.
She immediately began thinking of excuses for not attending the Deathday Party.
But she didn’t even need to think of one.
Harry’s next sentence was that Vesey shouldn’t go.
"There are a lot of strange ghosts there. I’m not comfortable with you going."
Harry said firmly.
Nick had said that some ghosts from outside Hogwarts would be attending.
Who knew whether those ghosts were good or bad?
Harry had heard some of the Hogwarts ghosts joking that if a ghost liked a girl, it could deliberately pass through her body, and that it would be a great pleasure.
Of course, the Hogwarts ghosts were only joking.
They normally tried not to bump into students, and it was usually the students who accidentally walked through them.
But the same couldn’t necessarily be said for ghosts from outside.
Maybe they really would do something like that.
Harry didn’t want Vesey to experience it.
Although Vesey didn’t know exactly what he was thinking, she was certainly very happy when she heard that she didn’t have to go.
However, she still looked reluctant on the surface.
"Brother, won’t you take me with you?"
She looked so sad that Harry almost changed his mind.
Fortunately, he held firm.
"Be good. When I come back, I’ll tell you everything that happened at the party!"
Harry said confidently.
Of course, Vesey could only obediently nod.
Her heart was already blooming with joy.
She secretly laughed at Harry.
Young man, you’re going to suffer this time. That’s all there is to it.
But Harry didn’t know that he, Hermione, and Ron were actually looking forward to the Deathday Party.
They had never attended a banquet like this before!
Of course, all of this was happening behind Vesey’s back.
Harry thought Vesey would be even more upset if she knew.
After all, he had stopped Vesey from attending the Deathday Party, but he hadn’t stopped Hermione from going to see the excitement.
He probably really did think of Vesey as his little sister and Hermione as his brother!
Who would worry about something like this for a buddy?
Halloween soon arrived.
Harry began regretting his decision to attend the Deathday Party.
Halloween at Hogwarts was as lively as ever.
Bats of all sizes flew around the castle, and Hagrid’s pumpkins had now been carved into enormous pumpkin lanterns, each large enough for several people to sit inside.
Hagrid had even specially put Vesey inside one.
When Vesey obediently sat inside it, Harry felt that she looked just like the adorable princesses from the Muggle fairy tales he had read as a child.
Hmm...
A princess?
Besides that, Dumbledore had also arranged for a skeleton band to perform at the school.
Harry regretted everything.
He didn’t even want to attend the Deathday Party now.
But no.
Hermione had arrogantly reminded him:
"Once a promise has been made, it must be kept."
Harry sighed.
He really wanted to slap himself.
At exactly seven o’clock, everyone gradually gathered in the Great Hall.
Harry, Hermione, and Ron walked around the hall together before making their way toward the underground chamber.
The closer they got to Nearly Headless Nick’s Deathday Party, the dimmer the lighting became and the colder the air grew.
By now, it wasn’t just Harry who regretted coming.
Hermione and Ron wanted to turn back as well.
The atmosphere was completely different from the brightly lit Great Hall.
The sound of fingernails scratching across a blackboard echoed through the passageways.
Apparently, this was supposed to be ghost music.
It was truly enough to send chills down their spines.
After they spoke with Nearly Headless Nick, what they saw was food that had already gone rotten...
Hundreds of milky-white ghosts played eerie and frightening music.
Pale blue candles cast an unsettling glow.
The air was so cold that it made them shiver.
"Should we go back now?"
Ron asked nervously.
Harry wanted to agree.
But he couldn’t.
He had also promised Nick that he would tell the leaders of the Headless Hunt that Nick was frightening.
He had given his word.
And he had to keep it.
"Then let’s walk around. Maybe we’ll run into a few acquaintances..."
Before Hermione could finish speaking, her expression suddenly changed.
"Quick, hide!"
She grabbed Harry and Ron and hurriedly tried to turn around.
But it was already too late.
Moaning Myrtle appeared in front of them.
She glared at them angrily.
"Why are you avoiding me? Is it because you hate me?"
