Chapter 157 — You Might Lose Your Life
Harry was still listening, but Dobby suddenly showed an expression of horror and fear.
Then it grabbed the jar beside Harry’s bed and smashed it against its own head.
"Bad Dobby! Bad Dobby!"
it shouted loudly.
Harry felt guilty, afraid that someone might come looking for him.
If Madam Pomfrey heard...
Besides, he still wanted to know about the Chamber of Secrets.
He quickly grabbed Dobby’s hand to stop it from hurting itself again.
"Tell me, is there really a Chamber of Secrets? And you said it has been opened before?"
Dobby reached for the jar again, but Harry caught its hand once more.
"Vesey isn’t Muggle-born. She’ll be fine, right?"
Dobby hurriedly shook its head.
"I don’t know, sir. Don’t ask. Dobby can’t say any more. Someone is planning a conspiracy... Sir, you should leave now!"
"No. My sister and my friends are all here. How could I leave?"
Dobby was moved.
"Mr. Harry Potter really is a good person. He loves his sister, and he also—"
Dobby’s voice suddenly stopped.
Harry knew why.
There were footsteps outside.
Dobby disappeared immediately.
Harry quickly lay back down on the bed. Through narrowed eyes, he saw Dumbledore enter the hospital wing.
He was holding one end of something with both hands, while Professor McGonagall held the other end.
The two of them worked together to place the object on the hospital bed beside Vesey.
"Go and get Madam Pomfrey," Dumbledore said quietly.
Professor McGonagall hurried away from Harry’s bedside.
Harry quickly closed his eyes. He didn’t want them to think he had been eavesdropping.
After a while, he heard Madam Pomfrey’s voice.
She hurried in, putting on her coat as she walked.
"What happened?"
she asked worriedly.
Harry saw her lean over to examine what Dumbledore had brought in.
"Petrified. Another attack. McGonagall found him at the top of the stairs."
It was Dumbledore’s voice.
Harry’s heart sank.
Then he heard Professor McGonagall.
"There’s a bunch of grapes beside him. We think he was on his way here to visit Vesey."
Harry immediately knew who it was.
Colin Creevey.
The boy who sometimes annoyed him.
Harry suddenly felt guilty for ever being irritated with him.
He slowly raised himself and carefully looked over.
It really was Colin.
His face was stiff and immobile, and he was still clutching his camera.
"Could he have taken a picture of the attacker?"
Professor McGonagall took the camera from Colin and opened it to inspect it.
But the moment she opened it, there was a hissing sound from inside, accompanied by the smell of something burning.
"It’s melted! Everything inside has melted!"
Madam Pomfrey cried out in shock.
Then both women looked toward Dumbledore.
Dumbledore said nothing.
His eyes fell on Vesey’s face. Half of it was hidden in the shadows.
He spoke softly.
"This means that the Chamber of Secrets really has been opened."
Harry heard Professor McGonagall and Madam Pomfrey gasp.
"Albus, you must know who did it, don’t you?"
Professor McGonagall covered her mouth.
Dumbledore nodded.
"I know who did it. But I want to know how he did it, and who he used to carry it out."
After a moment of silence, Harry saw Dumbledore and Professor McGonagall leave.
Only Madam Pomfrey remained.
She pulled the curtain around Colin’s bed and then came over to Harry and Vesey.
She murmured in confusion, "Why are the curtains open around these two children? Did Harry wake up during the night?"
Harry didn’t move, forcing himself to keep his breathing steady.
Madam Pomfrey didn’t become suspicious.
She quickly drew the curtains around Harry and Vesey and then hurried away.
The next morning.
Harry woke up early.
He looked at Vesey, who was still fast asleep.
Madam Pomfrey thought Vesey was simply exhausted, so there was nothing unusual about her sleeping a little longer.
She checked Harry’s arm again and confirmed that it was healing well.
Then she sent him away, refusing to let him stay in the hospital wing any longer.
Harry had no choice but to leave.
He returned to the Gryffindor common room and searched the dormitory, but he couldn’t find Ron.
He went to the library.
Still nothing.
Then he finally thought of one place and ran toward Myrtle’s bathroom.
Sure enough, Ron and Hermione were there.
They were startled when they heard the door open.
Fortunately, Harry called out in time.
"It’s me!"
They opened the door and let him in.
"Where’s Vesey?"
Hermione asked worriedly.
"Is her foot better?"
"She’s fine. She seemed normal when I woke up this morning, but she was still sleeping. Madam Pomfrey said she was just too tired..."
Harry sighed.
Hermione shook her head helplessly.
"I really hope she can finish researching that potion soon. She’s working herself far too hard!"
"Yeah. By the way, there’s something you two need to know."
Hermione and Ron were already listening.
Both of them looked extremely angry.
"Malfoy obviously lost the match, so he took all his anger out on Colin!"
Harry’s expression darkened.
He knew that was what had happened.
After a moment of silence, Harry added, "There’s one more thing you probably haven’t heard about. Dobby came to see me last night!"
He told Ron and Hermione everything that had happened.
But Hermione didn’t immediately focus on the Chamber of Secrets.
Instead, she looked at Harry reproachfully.
"How could you leave Vesey uncovered like that? Don’t you know how to close the curtain around her?"
Harry stared at her dumbfounded.
"I thought..."
"You thought? What do you know? You know nothing!"
Hermione said angrily.
She continued scolding Harry for being irresponsible.
After a while, Harry apologized, and Hermione finally calmed down.
Harry wiped the sweat from his forehead.
Hermione and Vesey really are like sisters.
And he really was being a rather irresponsible brother.
Heavens knew he simply hadn’t thought about it at the time.
"All right, stop talking about that. Let’s change the subject. We were obviously discussing the opening of the Chamber of Secrets!"
Ron quickly interrupted.
"Dobby said the Chamber of Secrets was opened before, too. Obviously, Lucius Malfoy opened it when he was studying here. And now Draco Malfoy has inherited his father’s legacy. He must be the Heir!"
Harry thought the same thing.
"I really wish Dobby had told me what kind of creature it is. How can it move around the school as if no one is there? Can it become invisible?"
Hermione suddenly turned to Harry with a sympathetic expression.
"That creature may really be invisible. But I think, Harry, you should be more concerned about your own safety.
"Dobby blocked the passage because it wanted to stop you from coming to school. It wanted you to go home, so it used the Bludger to chase you away.
"When do you think the next attack will happen?"
Ron also looked at Harry sympathetically.
"Exactly. If it keeps trying to ’save’ you like this, you might lose your life!"
