Chapter 181: Chapter 181: Act One
As the movie ended and the credits rolled, thunderous applause erupted throughout the theater before the lights even came on. It lasted a full few minutes.
Irene glanced around. Whether it was young girls or parents with children, everyone wore a smile, their eyes full of affection for Mia.
Some whispered, "Mia is so cute," while others said, "I wish I had a coming-of-age story like that." A little girl clutched her mother’s hand and mumbled, "I want to be as brave as Mia, too."
When Anne Hathaway and the creative team took the stage to express their gratitude, the applause reached a new peak.
She wore a light-colored gown similar in style to the one in the film. A shy but happy smile lit her face as she bowed deeply to the audience.
"Thank you all for loving Mia, and thank you for loving this movie." The cheers grew even louder, and reporters raised their cameras, capturing her image without pause.
Irene clapped along, having to admit there was a reason this film would become one of the most successful chick flicks in Hollywood.
It didn’t try to pander to anyone. It simply used a straightforward coming-of-age story to tap into everyone’s longing for beauty and transformation.
And Anne Hathaway’s performance truly brought Mia to life, making it impossible not to fall for this slightly clumsy but exceptionally sincere princess.
As the crowd began to disperse, Anne Hathaway circled back to Irene, her eyes sparkling. "Irene, what did you think of my performance? The audience liked it, didn’t they?"
Irene smiled and nodded. "It was fantastic. You made Mia’s growth feel so real. The audience’s applause is the best proof of that."
They chatted for a few more moments before Anne was called away by staff for interviews, and Irene followed Amy out of the screening hall.
The night air carried a chill, but it couldn’t dispel the warmth left by the film. Thinking of the smiles on the audience’s faces, Irene became even more certain that, whether it was a pirate adventure or a chick flick, the meaning of a good movie lay in its ability to resonate with people and let them feel something beautiful.
...
At the end of August, once all of Irene’s work in Los Angeles was finished, she took the entire team and flew to Port Royal Bay, where they would officially begin filming Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl.
In the early morning at Port Royal Bay, mist hung over everything, and the sea breeze carried the scent of coconuts to shore.
In the colonial-style port built along the coast, the wooden pier had been polished until it gleamed. A white lighthouse stood at the mouth of the bay, and several 18th-century-style sailing ships were docked in the shallows, their canvas sails swaying gently in the wind.
Irene wore a waterproof jacket and stood behind the monitor in her sand-covered Martin boots, speaking into the walkie-talkie.
"Final checks for all departments. Camera, line up your shot. Lighting, adjust for backlight. Props, set the cargo on the pier. Actors, take your positions."
Today they were shooting the major opening sequence of Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl: the Black Pearl’s raid on Port Royal. Captain Jack would lead the pirates to plunder the town, and Elizabeth, because of the Aztec gold coin around her neck, would be abducted as a descendant of pirates.
The scene required dynamic action, needed to plant suspense, and had to capture Elizabeth’s panic and bewilderment, as well as Will Turner’s anxiety and willingness to sacrifice himself. It would set the tone for the entire film.
Johnny Depp was already in Captain Jack’s costume. His dirty pirate hat sat tilted over his messy hair. He wore a striped shirt with an open collar, a worn leather vest, and old trousers. A sword and compass hung at his waist, and a bit of smoky makeup shadowed his eyes, giving him a tipsy, cunning glint.
He didn’t stay in the rest area. Instead, he paced the pier, leaning on his sword. Sometimes he mimicked a pirate’s staggering gait, sometimes he whispered his lines. He had already immersed himself completely in the role.
Henry Cavill wore the coarse work clothes of a blacksmith, his strong arms exposed, his face smudged with soot from the forge. Still, his posture was upright.
He was confirming his sword-drawing stance with the action director, his focus absolute. At this point, Will Turner was still only a blacksmith’s apprentice who silently protected Elizabeth. In this scene, he had to convey both fear of the pirates and the courage to defend the woman he loved.
Keira Knightley wore an exquisite white aristocratic gown, layered with ruffles and lace at the collar. Her hair was pinned up, and around her neck hung the key prop: the Aztec gold coin necklace.
She sat on a wooden crate on the pier, considering Elizabeth’s mindset. She needed to maintain the composure of a noblewoman, show genuine panic at the arrival of pirates, and still retain a flicker of defiance when she was abducted.
"All departments ready. Action!" Irene commanded, and the set immediately fell silent.
The camera slowly pushed in. Sunlight cut through the mist and spilled across the sea.
Suddenly, a bugle sounded in the distance. The black sails of the Black Pearl pierced the morning fog, rushing forward like a ghost. The cannon muzzles along the ship’s side glinted coldly.
"Pirates!" a port guard shouted. The once-quiet pier descended into chaos. Merchants scrambled to pack their goods. Pedestrians ran in every direction. Screams mixed with pounding footsteps.
Johnny Depp stood by the ship’s rail, a smirk on his lips. As the Black Pearl docked, he stepped onto the gangplank and staggered ashore, twirling his sword before casually pressing it to a guard’s throat. His tone was flippant. "Good morning, gentlemen. Perfect day for a raid, isn’t it?"
He delivered the line with unmistakable flair—a blend of drunkenness and sharp wit. He looked every inch the pirate.
Henry Cavill rushed into the crowd at once, desperately searching for Elizabeth. Seeing several pirates surrounding her, he grabbed a hammer from nearby and charged, scuffling with them.
His movements were powerful but unpolished, fitting Will Turner’s self-taught skill as a blacksmith. The anxiety and anger on his face felt especially real.
Keira Knightley portrayed Elizabeth’s panic and stubbornness beautifully. As she was chased by pirates, her gown caught on a wooden crate and she fell to the ground. The Aztec gold coin slipped from her neck and hit the planks with a clear, metallic clink.
A pirate snatched up the coin, his eyes widening with greed and shock. "It’s the Aztec gold!" he shouted. "Take this woman to the ship!"
She was dragged toward the Black Pearl, fear written across her face. Still, she bit her lip hard and refused to cry, her eyes burning with defiance.
"Cut!" Irene pressed pause and spoke into the walkie-talkie. "Everyone’s working well together, but that last handheld shot was too shaky. Let’s do it again. Keira, struggle a bit more when they drag you. We need to see the resistance. Henry, move faster when you charge the pirates. It has to feel more urgent."
The actors immediately reset, and all departments hurried to adjust.
Johnny Depp walked over to Irene with a grin. "Irene, what if we add a bit where Jack kicks a crate when he lands? It might show his roguish side better."
Irene thought for a moment and nodded. "Let’s try it. Just make sure it doesn’t throw off the camera."
