Chapter 187: Chapter 187: Transformation

By the bonfire, everyone was enjoying delicious food and chatting.

Depp and Nicolas huddled together, drinking beer and reminiscing about the old days. Britney and Keira sat on the beach, quietly sharing their thoughts on music and acting. Francis was discussing filmmaking techniques with Henry and the assistant director. Eleanor was grilling seafood with the staff, surrounded by laughter.

Irene leaned back in her chair, watching the lively scene before her. Surrounded by loved ones, friends, and like-minded colleagues, the glow of the bonfire illuminated everyone’s smiling faces, while the sound of the distant waves was gentle and healing.

She picked up a Mimi shrimp cracker and put it in her mouth. The savory taste mixed with the scent of the sea breeze, filling her heart with peace and warmth.

The commotion by the bonfire continued. Holding her full stomach, Irene couldn’t eat another bite, so she slipped away quietly to take a walk along the beach to digest.

The evening breeze, carrying the coolness of the seawater, felt exceptionally comfortable on her face. The fine sand beneath her feet was soft and warm, crunching as she stepped on it.

She walked slowly along the coastline. The light from the distant bonfire reflected on the surface of the sea, shimmering.

As she walked, she suddenly caught sight of a familiar figure sitting alone by some rocks not far away. It was Britney.

Irene slowed her pace, walked over gently, and placed her hand on Britney’s shoulder, asking softly, "Why are you here alone? It’s so lively by the bonfire, and Edward is looking for you too."

Britney turned her head, a trace of melancholy on her face, and managed a weak smile. "I felt a bit stifled. I wanted to come out for some air." She patted the sand beside her, signaling for Irene to sit down.

Irene sat down next to her, watching her stare blankly at the sea, and asked softly, "Is something on your mind? Want to tell me about it?"

After a moment of silence, Britney spoke slowly, her tone full of conflict. "It’s about my new album. The company wants me to continue with my previous route, that teen idol style. They say it’s the safest and guarantees sales. But I don’t want to stay like this forever. I want to try funk and R&B, something more mature, something with more of an adult feel."

She sighed, her fingers unconsciously digging into the fine sand. "I know the company’s concerns. My previous two albums sold so well, and everyone is used to that sweet version of me. If I suddenly change my style, fans might not buy it, and sales might drop. But I really don’t want to be boxed into the ’teen’ label forever. I want to try new things and let everyone see a different side of me."

Irene listened quietly, understanding.

She remembered very clearly that Britney’s third album was indeed full of controversy. The transformation from an innocent girl to a sexy diva caused quite a stir at the time, and many old fans found it hard to accept, with initial album sales falling short of expectations.

But this transformation was essential. It would allow Britney to break free from her fixed label and ultimately solidify her status in the pop music scene, becoming an irreplaceable "Pop Diva."

"I support you." Irene looked into Britney’s eyes, her tone firm. "Stagnating in one style is the scariest thing. You can’t be a seventeen or eighteen-year-old girl forever, and your music should grow with you."

Britney looked at her, somewhat surprised. "You think I should stick to my own ideas too? But the company says the risk is too high."

"Of course there’s risk," Irene smiled. "But a temporary dip in sales is far better than being bound by a label for your whole life. You’re only twenty. You have the capital to experiment. Even if this time isn’t understood by everyone, it doesn’t matter. True fans will slowly accept your growth, and a new style will attract new listeners. You have to believe that your talent extends beyond just being a ’teen idol.’"

She paused, thinking of that controversial yet influential album, and added,

"Transformation is a gradual process. You don’t need to completely overturn everything at once. You can use half the album to keep the style everyone is familiar with, and in the remaining half, incorporate more of the funk and R&B elements you want to try, slowly guiding the fans to accept it. Besides, as long as the music quality is good enough, even if there’s controversy at first, it will eventually be recognized by everyone."

In truth, the sluggish sales of that album were because the songs weren’t distinctive enough. Aside from the lead single "I’m a Slave 4 U," which was somewhat unique, the rest of the reception was mediocre.

Although Irene really liked "Lonely" and "I’m Not a Girl, Not Yet a Woman." She could hear Britney’s inner feelings in those two songs. That was only because in the future, knowing the hardships Britney experienced, she realized how painful she was during this stage.

But now, Britney’s life had already undergone amazing changes. Singing those two songs again would be a bit melodramatic.

Britney’s eyes brightened, as if she had grasped a glimmer of hope. "Do you think I really can do it? I’m afraid I won’t do well, that I’ll fail the company’s expectations and disappoint my fans."

"Of course you can," Irene patted her shoulder. "You have talent and courage, and that’s enough. Besides, regarding the music quality, maybe I can help you think of something." She recalled the classic funk and R&B songs she had heard in her past life, as well as her own understanding of melody and rhythm.

"If you’re not in a huge rush, you can just hang around and have fun for these next few days. When my work gets a bit lighter next week, we can listen to the demos you’ve prepared together. I’ll help you brainstorm and see how we can adjust things to make the style more cohesive and memorable."

Looking at Irene’s sincere eyes, Britney’s inner confusion gradually dissipated, and a long-lost smile appeared on her face. "Really? That’s great. Thank you, Irene. Actually, I’ve looked for many producers, but they all think I should follow the company’s arrangements. You’re the only one who supports me."

"Because I know you deserve better and can achieve better," Irene said with a smile. "Don’t put too much pressure on yourself. The most important thing about making music is being happy and staying true to your heart. Even if there are setbacks in the end, it doesn’t matter. At least you tried, and you won’t regret it."

The sea breeze blew gently, carrying their laughter into the distance.

Britney took a deep breath, stood up, and shouted at the sea, as if releasing all her pressure. She turned to look at Irene, her eyes full of determination. "I’ve decided. I’ll do it my way. When we get back, we’ll polish the demos together."

"Great," Irene also stood up and high-fived her.

The two walked side by side toward the bonfire. In the night, their shadows were stretched long by the moonlight. Irene knew that Britney’s road to transformation wouldn’t be smooth sailing, but she was willing to face it with her and help her make this transformation even more brilliant.
