Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Unexpected Surprise

Irene Coppola and Britney Spears were nominated for Best Director and Best New Artist, respectively.

Both were significant categories, so their seats were near the front, surrounded by established artists.

Britney introduced Irene and Edward to several people. Most were cordial, nodding or shaking hands. A few ignored them.

Before the ceremony began, Irene overheard conversations. The main topic was Irene herself.

That was expected. She believed that visibility brought scrutiny. Her presence would draw reactions, so she didn’t dwell on it.

Unlike many in the room, she was fairly certain she wouldn’t win.

The day before, she had received a call from the committee asking her to present Best New Artist.

If she was presenting, it was unlikely she’d also win Best New Artist, and having Best New Artist and Best Director go to the same project was improbable. MTV would consider the other nominees.

She also had modest expectations for Best Director. Directing Britney’s MV might be her only music video credit, and compared to directors with years in the field, her experience was limited.

Winning today would feel premature.

Later, Britney went backstage to prepare. She had a performance scheduled.

At this major pop music ceremony, Britney appeared in a sparkly cropped top and school-inspired outfit, performing with energy and confidence.

The performance elevated her from a rising name to a global figure, cementing the "Britney" moment.

During the set, Britney saw Irene in the audience. Having her best friend present at this milestone gave her confidence.

When it ended, Irene led the applause, as if the stage belonged to Britney.

Other acts followed. Among the young performers of the era, aside from Britney, most were boy bands like Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC.

When Britney returned to her seat, *NSYNC was performing.

"That guy looks familiar. Did you share a stage with him?" Irene asked casually.

"Oh, you mean Justin Timberlake? We were both on Disney Channel’s The Mickey Mouse Club, so you’ve probably seen him."

Irene noted Britney’s tone was matter-of-fact, with no particular emotion. A relationship between them seemed unlikely in this timeline.

"Interested? Want me to introduce you?" Britney teased.

"I don’t go for that type. No thanks."

Britney shrugged. "Your loss."

After the performances, the host took the stage and the awards began.

Awards were announced one by one. As the music categories neared completion, Irene saw crew signaling from backstage.

She nodded to them, then whispered to Britney: "Brit, I’m going to the restroom. Be right back."

Britney waved her off. "Go. But be back before Best New Artist, okay?"

Britney didn’t expect that when the host began the Best New Artist introduction, Irene still wasn’t back.

She was nervous about the result and concerned about Irene’s absence, but the cameras prevented movement. Her hands betrayed her anxiety.

"This year’s presenter is unique," the host said, building suspense.

"As far as I know, she’s the youngest presenter in MTV history. Please welcome Irene Coppola to announce Best New Artist."

The spotlight hit the entrance, and Irene walked out.

Britney covered her mouth in surprise, eyes wide. Murmurs spread through the crowd, and hope faded from other nominees as they saw Irene.

Irene walked to the microphone and opened the gold envelope. She had changed into a black gown, smiling.

Her gaze found Britney.

"The winner of this year’s MTV Best New Artist award is..." Irene paused, and the room went quiet.

Britney heard her blood rushing. She saw Irene’s lips form the name she’d hoped for—

"Britney Spears."

"...Baby One More Time" began playing as Britney froze, stunned.

Applause and cheers erupted. Someone nudged her, and she stood, nearly catching her foot on the table leg.

She walked to the stage slowly. Irene opened her arms, handed her the heavy, gold microphone-shaped trophy, and hugged her tightly.

"Surprise, champion," Irene whispered, proud and happy, thinking, I helped you get the Best New Artist award you missed, and your path will only go up from here.

At that moment, Britney’s tension broke.

When Irene and Britney returned to their seats, hand in hand, Britney was still crying.

Edward offered his pocket square. Britney took it and was about to use it when Irene covered her hand and whispered,

"Think of tomorrow’s photos."

Caught between relief and image concerns, Britney hesitated. Irene guided her to a spot off-camera, let her compose herself, and borrowed cosmetics from a producer to fix her makeup.

Thanks to Britney’s natural look, and to Irene’s knowledge from beauty videos in her past life, the touch-up was quick. They returned to their seats.

As they sat, Irene heard the host announce Best Director. She exhaled quietly; she’d made it back in time.

Even if she wouldn’t win, she needed to be present for the nomination shot. An empty seat would seem disrespectful.

When the presenter took the stage, she was mentally planning the rest of summer—Hawaii or Las Vegas—not paying attention to the proceedings.

So when her name was called, she was distracted and didn’t register it at first.

Only Britney’s scream brought her back. She looked up to see everyone staring at her.

There was curiosity, congratulations, shock, even disbelief. She processed it.

Her mind caught up, but her body moved automatically. She hugged Britney and Edward, then walked to the stage.

Holding the trophy, she opened her mouth and found no words initially.

After a pause, she spoke:

"Honestly, when I was asked to present Best New Artist, I assumed I had no chance for Best Director, so I didn’t prepare a speech."

The audience laughed; the situation was unusual.

"But since I’m here, I’ll say a few things. Thank you to my parents for their support, my agent for his work, and the fans for voting."

"But most of all, thank you to Brit. Without you, I wouldn’t have made this MV. You started everything, and you’re the best lead I could ask for."

Applause filled the room again, celebrating the two of them.

On stage, Irene smiled. In the audience, Britney cried again.

The moment appeared on front pages the next day.
