Hollywood : Queen of Entertainment
Chapter 280: Trust
Chapter 280: Chapter 280: Trust
The light in the editing room was soft. The final cut of Million Dollar Baby played on the screen.
The close-up of Hilary Swank in the hospital bed — relief and resolve in her eyes — was shaped by Hill Cook’s precise rhythm into something quietly devastating.
Irene leaned back on the sofa, fingertips tapping the armrest. She watched the screen closely, trading the occasional note with Hill beside her.
Just then, a phone rang and broke the quiet.
Irene picked it up. "Robert Iger" showed on the screen.
"Irene, you won’t believe it!" Iger’s voice burst through, electric with excitement. "The merchandise is exploding! Captain Jack’s tricorn hats, pirate costumes, accessories — every item you told us to stock is a runaway hit! Disneyland stores sold out in a day, and authorized retailers are flooding us with restock calls. Even our European branches are begging for inventory. This is way beyond what we projected!"
Irene picked up the water glass on the table and took a sip, her tone calm, as if she’d seen it coming. "Is that so? That’s great. Captain Jack is unforgettable. It makes sense the merchandise would take off."
"’That’s great’?" Robert laughed, admiration in his voice. "Irene, you’re a little too calm. I’ve been in this business for years and seen plenty of hits, but I’ve never met anyone who can read the market like you. At first, we thought merch was an afterthought. If you hadn’t pushed, we would’ve missed a huge upside. Your instincts are uncanny."
"Just luck," Irene said with a modest smile. "It happened to match what audiences wanted."
"Luck doesn’t cover this," Iger said, serious now. "By the way, have you seen the latest box office?"
Irene raised an eyebrow. "Not yet. We’re at a critical point in the cut."
"Then let me give you the good news!" Iger’s voice lifted. "Opening day: $23.12 million. Day two jumped to $28.29 million! Two days in, we’re past $51.41 million — well above our best early projections! With current attendance and show counts, first week should clear $80 million!"
The number made both people in the room pause.
Hill stopped working and looked over at Irene, admiration in his eyes.
A surge of quiet joy rose in her chest.
"This is fantastic for all three of us," Iger said, enthusiasm clear. "Fox is already celebrating. Now I need to talk business. When are you free? We should discuss the sequels. That idea you had — shooting parts two and three back-to-back — my team ran the numbers. It’s doable! While the heat is on, we should move fast. It could be another box office run."
Irene glanced at Million Dollar Baby on the screen and answered evenly. "No rush. Let me finish what’s in front of me. The final cut is almost there. For the sequels, we have time to plan it right."
"Good! I’ll wait for your go," Iger said, not pressing. He knew Irene worked on her own clock. "If you need us to line anything up, say the word."
She hung up and set the phone down. Hill walked over with a glass of champagne, a sincere smile on his face. "Congratulations, Irene. Another massive win."
Irene took the glass and clinked it lightly with his. The cold liquid caught the light in her eyes. "Thank you," she said, taking a sip, relief in her tone. "And thank you for the cut. Pirates wouldn’t be what it is without you."
"It’s because you picked the right story and the right people," Hill said. "Now that Pirates is a hit and sequels are on deck, your career’s heading to the next level."
The clink of glasses still hung in the air. Irene set hers down, eyes on the end credits of Million Dollar Baby, a touch of reflection in her voice. "I’ve found a lot of good projects these last few years, but with the Pirates sequels to map out, the Facebook IPO coming up, and several company investments needing decisions, I’m stretched thin."
Hill nodded. He’d worked with Irene long enough to know her pace. "You are running on fumes," he said honestly. "But that drive is why every film lands."
Irene smiled and looked at him, her eyes full of trust.
From Legally Blonde to Million Dollar Baby, his cuts had always caught the emotion and rhythm she wanted. More than that, he’d spend months refining a single sequence. That craft and patience put her at ease.
She was quiet for a few seconds, as if settling on something, then said, "Hill, have you ever thought about becoming a producer?"
"What?"
The champagne in Hill’s hand sloshed. Cold wine spilled onto his knuckles, but he didn’t notice. He froze.
The question hit like a lightning bolt, scattering his thoughts.
He’d joined the Coppola Family’s American Zoetrope straight out of school, starting as the lowest assistant. It took years to find his footing. When he was recommended to Irene, he was still unknown.
Following her, his name rose with each hit. In the industry, "Hill Cook" stopped meaning "an editor from the Coppola Family" and started meaning "Irene Coppola’s golden partner."
His skills were solid. He studied the rhythms of every genre. With Irene’s platform and trust, he’d become one of the most in-demand editors in Hollywood.
But producer? That was a dream he only let himself touch late at night.
In Hollywood, the producer sits at the top.
The director shapes the art, the writer builds the spine, the editor tunes the rhythm — but the producer makes the final calls and holds the project’s life in their hands.
It’s power and responsibility in one, the goal for countless filmmakers.
He’d imagined reaching it someday, but never thought the offer would come this directly, from the person he trusted most.
Irene watched his stunned face and didn’t rush him. She waited.
She knew Hill. He had talent, patience, and a real understanding of cinema — the core traits of a great producer.
More important, he understood her creative philosophy and her standards. A partner like that was worth more than any outside hire.
