Chapter 54: Chapter 54: The Arrival of Friends

Francis smiled and elaborated.

"At Fox, owing to Legally Blonde and the forthcoming Mean Girls, the studio is now thoroughly persuaded of Irene’s judgment and commercial viability."

"They have reached an internal consensus that Irene embodies an emerging methodology for engaging the young female demographic."

He paused, adopting the cadence of a Fox executive he had overheard.

"’The Coppola women’ appear to have identified a mechanism we previously neglected."

"Since Irene has demonstrated success, Sophia—possessing the same lineage and a comparable focus on female perspectives—merits investment."

Eleanor smiled and added, patting Irene’s hand gently.

"Consequently, Fox employed terms that Paramount could not easily decline and assumed distribution and creative oversight of The Virgin Suicides."

"Internally, they refer to it as... the ’Coppola Sisters Twin Star Project.’"

Marcia Lucas, listening nearby, interjected with amusement.

"Irene, you are no longer merely directing films; you are now indirectly shaping the fate of other projects."

"It appears Sophia owes you a considerable debt of gratitude."

Irene comprehended the implication; she had not anticipated that her success would produce repercussions for Sophia’s work.

She understood that The Virgin Suicides possessed a disposition entirely distinct from Mean Girls; it was more elegiac, more lyrical, and more authorial.

She responded promptly.

"This development was unknown to me."

"Sophia’s film is singular; Fox should not evaluate it by conventional commercial metrics."

Francis gestured dismissively.

"Pressure is inevitable; members of the Coppola family are accustomed to it."

"Considered differently, the situation is advantageous."

"Owing to your success, Fox is prepared to furnish Sophia with a broader platform and greater resources than Paramount might have provided."

"The ultimate outcome depends on her execution."

"It constitutes both an opportunity and a test."

George Lucas nodded in concurrence.

"This is the nature of Hollywood; success generates a halo effect."

"Irene, you have established a precedent, and others will inevitably follow or benefit from it."

"That alone attests to your influence."

The conversation transitioned from commercial matters to cinematic artistry, and the group discussed Sophia’s distinctive aesthetic.

Listening to the exchange, Irene experienced a profound realization.

She perceived that her work no longer represented an isolated career; she was influencing the allocation of industry resources and, to some extent, facilitating access for other female creators with singular perspectives.

Before evening commenced, Vivian and Britney arrived in Malibu in succession.

Vivian arrived first, driving a weathered Jeep.

Dust covered the vehicle, but her expression was radiant, and she carried a large container that emitted an enticing sweet fragrance before she crossed the threshold.

"Aunt Eleanor, Uncle Francis, Happy Thanksgiving."

She greeted them with enthusiasm and extended the container to Irene.

"My mother insisted I deliver this. Her honey-roasted chicken wings. She wishes to thank you for your support."

Irene accepted the warm container and felt a surge of gratitude.

"Please convey our thanks to your mother; she is most considerate."

"Come inside; it is only family, so do not feel reserved."

Shortly thereafter, the subdued sound of another engine approached.

Britney appeared at the entrance.

She wore casual, tasteful attire and displayed her characteristic bright smile, though the several elegant paper bags she carried indicated considerable sophistication.

Observing that Britney had driven herself, Irene expressed mock envy.

"You possess a driver’s license as well?"

"I understand Vivian having the opportunity, but are you not engaged with preparations for your second album?"

"When did you complete instruction?"

"Capital facilitates all things, you know," Britney replied, winking.

"This is my first visit to your Malibu residence."

"The setting is remarkable."

"When my next album performs well, I intend to acquire a property here."

She proceeded into the house.

"Hello everyone."

"Happy Thanksgiving."

Britney’s voice, like her demeanor, conveyed vitality.

She greeted Irene’s parents and the Lucas family with courtesy, then produced elegantly wrapped boxes from the bags.

"A modest gift; I hope you find it agreeable."

She presented a scarf to each woman present: Eleanor, Marcia, Sophia, Irene, and Vivian.

The boxes were opened.

The scarves were of superior quality, printed with the classic Fendi double-F insignia, and rendered in refined, tasteful colors.

"Britney, this is excessive," Eleanor said, touching the fabric with surprise.

Britney smiled with restrained pride.

"Fendi provided them."

"Their public relations director contacted Shelly, stating that they admired my style and believed I embodied the vitality of the new generation."

"We are negotiating an endorsement agreement, and these were samples."

"I thought the color suited everyone, so I repurposed them as gifts."

"As long as you are pleased, that is sufficient."

Irene understood the significance immediately.

A heritage luxury house such as Fendi exercises considerable discretion in selecting ambassadors.

Their interest reflected Britney’s expanding global influence and fashion capital, indicating that her career was entering a new, more prominent phase.

"That is remarkable, Britney," Irene said, embracing her friend with genuine pleasure.

"You have earned this."

"Fendi possesses excellent judgment."

Sophia draped the scarf around her neck; the soft texture was appropriate for the approaching winter.

"Thank you; I appreciate it."

Vivian was equally delighted and whispered to Irene.

"I cannot believe I received a new Fendi item in advance."

Compared with the others present, Vivian’s background was modest; she could not readily purchase such luxury goods, even a scarf.

The group stored their gifts and proceeded, smiling, to the spacious dining room to commence the Thanksgiving meal.

Francis instructed the staff to serve his preferred wine, the estate’s signature Rubicon; only Jack received cola.

He began to express disappointment, but his attention shifted immediately to the large roasted turkey at the center of the table.

"Irene, I must reiterate, your recipe for this turkey is exceptional," Eleanor said, regarding her daughter with pride.

The turkey was indeed remarkable, its skin crisp and amber, while the interior remained tender and succulent, infused with a complex fragrance of herbs and fruitwood.

The dish represented a formula Irene had refined through repeated experimentation, inspired by culinary cinema from her recollections of the future, improving upon traditional roasting techniques and marinades, and it consistently received highest commendation from family and guests.

Dinner commenced in a cheerful and relaxed atmosphere, with the sound of cutlery against plates intermingling with conversation and laughter.

The guests shared food and recounted anecdotes from their lives.

Amid this harmonious setting, Britney, seated beside Irene, waited until attention shifted to Francis’s account of the grape harvest.

She turned slightly and, in a tone audible only to Irene, asked with curiosity and puzzlement:

"I heard that Fendi previously contacted you to serve as a brand ambassador, but you declined?"
