Chapter 2793: Story 2794: The Shadow That Remembered
“Begin the second war.”
Lyra’s voice echoed through the darkness.
She clamped both hands over her mouth.
“I didn’t say that.”
Ronan turned toward her, his sword burning red against the blackness. “I heard you.”
“No.” Lyra shook her head. “Something spoke through me.”
A seventh heartbeat thundered beneath her ribs.
Then the darkness answered.
“You spoke before you were born.”
Silver light erupted across the chamber, revealing Seratha standing motionless beneath the shadow of the First Father. The enormous silhouette stretched across the walls, its six eyes burning like dying suns.
But Seratha’s own eyes were closed.
“Mother!” Ronan shouted.
Her head tilted toward him.
When she opened her eyes, they were no longer red. They were golden.
“You have grown into a beautiful weapon, my son.”
Ronan raised his sword. “Get away from her.”
The shadow laughed.
“You still believe your mother is the prisoner. Look more carefully.”
Ronan hesitated.
Thin black chains extended from Seratha’s wrists, disappearing into her own shadow. They were not binding her body.
They were holding something inside it.
Something that struggled whenever the seventh heartbeat sounded.
Lyra approached cautiously. “Seratha, can you hear me?”
The First Mother smiled sadly.
“Do you remember the first lullaby I sang to you?”
Lyra froze.
“I never knew you.”
“You did.” Tears rolled down Seratha’s golden cheeks. “Before your father erased you, you slept in my arms. You cried whenever the stars went dark.”
A memory flashed through Lyra’s mind.
Warm hands. A woman’s white hair. A voice singing beneath a sky without stars.
Then came a scream.
A child’s scream.
Lyra stumbled backward.
“You were there when I died.”
Seratha’s smile disappeared.
“I was there when you were erased.”
The shadow behind her suddenly seized her by the throat.
“Enough!”
The chamber split open.
Through the widening cracks, Lyra saw another world—a ruined kingdom beneath a blood-red moon. Silver-winged warriors fought armies of faceless dead while a crowned girl stood upon a mountain of broken swords.
The girl was Lyra.
In her hand, she carried a blade made from seven beating hearts.
Ronan stared at the vision.
“You ended the war,” he whispered.
“No,” Seratha replied through clenched teeth. “She ended creation to stop it.”
The words struck harder than any weapon.
Lyra looked at her hands. “What did I do?”
The shadow leaned closer, its golden eyes reflecting countless burning worlds.
“You chose your brothers over everything that ever lived.”
Ronan’s sword slipped slightly in his grasp.
“That’s impossible.”
“Is it?” the shadow asked. “Ask your mother why she divided the Firstborn’s heart. Ask her why one child was permitted to remember while another was condemned to become a monster.”
A terrible crack sounded inside Lyra’s chest.
The seventh heartbeat stopped.
For one silent instant, the entire universe seemed to hold its breath.
Then a new heartbeat answered from beyond the sealed golden door.
Seratha screamed.
“No! He’s waking too soon!”
The shadow smiled.
And Ronan recognized the voice that followed.
It was his own.
“Sons and daughters, your father is coming home.”
