Chapter 2799: Story 2800: The Last Heartbeat
The dead armies rose as the crown of black fire settled upon the false daughter’s head.
Across the battlefield, stars went dark. Kingdoms crumbled into dust, and the names of the dead vanished from every memory.
Ronan stood alone.
“Give her back!”
His voice carried no power, yet the battlefield trembled.
The crowned daughter turned toward him. “You still believe you can save everyone, brother. That was your first mistake.”
Behind her, seven black stars opened like watching eyes.
Ronan pressed his hand against his chest. Two hearts beat inside him—the heart of the forgotten child and the heart that had carried the hunger since before his birth.
Then a third heartbeat answered.
Lyra.
He closed his eyes.
He remembered her standing beside him beneath snowy mountains, her arrows flying while he fought the dead. He remembered her laughter in ruined kingdoms, her stubborn courage, and the way she had always reached for his hand when darkness swallowed the world.
“You told me not to let you remember your name,” he whispered. “You never told me to stop remembering you.”
Ronan tore open his chest with his own hands.
No blood spilled. Instead, a red light emerged, wrapped around a small golden heart—the last piece of the First Father’s stolen heart.
The forgotten child appeared beside him, no longer a frightened boy but a young warrior with Ronan’s face.
“If you return it,” the child warned, “you will lose everything that makes you yourself.”
Ronan smiled sadly. “Perhaps that is what I was meant to do.”
Together, the brothers placed the golden heart upon the battlefield.
Every chain shattered.
The colossal Father lifted his head as the dead stars returned to his body. For the first time, a face appeared upon him—not a monster’s face, but that of a weary father who had carried an impossible burden.
“Children,” he whispered.
The crowned daughter screamed as her black fire began to dissolve.
“No! I am the hunger! I am the forgotten one!”
“No,” Ronan answered. “You are our sister.”
The crown cracked.
From within it, Lyra emerged, suspended in golden light. Her eyes were closed, and seven heartbeats thundered through the silence.
The false daughter stared at her.
“Why did you save me?”
Lyra opened her eyes.
“Because I remember you.”
She spoke her sister’s forgotten name.
The name was not a word. It was the sound of the first star being born, the first tear being shed, and the first child calling for her mother.
The black fire vanished.
The sisters embraced, and the battlefield dissolved into countless golden lights.
Creation breathed again.
Seratha watched as her chains disappeared. Tears crossed her ancient face.
“I tried to save you all,” she whispered.
Ronan approached her. “Then let the truth live with us.”
She bowed her head, and for the first time, the First Mother had nothing left to hide.
Years later, survivors would tell stories of the warrior who surrendered his crown, the archer who remembered the forgotten, and the brothers who refused to abandon one another.
Ronan never recovered his sword. He no longer needed it.
On a quiet evening beneath a sky filled with stars, Lyra stood beside him.
“Is it over?” she asked.
Ronan listened.
One heartbeat.
Then another.
Then silence.
He smiled.
“For now.”
Far beyond creation, inside a darkness older than time, a tiny golden eye opened.
And a voice whispered:
“The next child is already dreaming.”
