Chapter 465: The Duet They Were Forced Into

  • Next Chapter

When it came to stage presence, Mo Fei couldn’t compare to Guo Ziyi. But that couldn’t be helped. It was simply her nature. Mo Fei didn’t like performances that were too showy. The way she understood a concert was that she sang slowly onstage while the fans quietly listened below.

After Guo Ziyi’s warm-up performance ended, Mo Fei returned to the stage wearing a simple outfit of jeans and a white T-shirt tucked into her waistband.

She simply undid her braids and removed her wig, letting her beautiful hair fall loosely over her shoulders, with a slight natural curl. With this simple look, it seemed as though a fairy had blended into the mortal world, transforming into the beautiful older girl next door who lived among everyone.

Although Mo Fei’s stage presence was somewhat plain and monotonous, she still managed to move every audience member present with her beautiful singing voice, making them listen more intently and respond even more enthusiastically with applause and cheers.

The concert progressed steadily in Mo Fei’s style. Chen Yijie also took the stage during the show, and his warm-up performance brought the fans quite a pleasant surprise. However, even Chen Yijie couldn’t change the concert’s overall atmosphere of quietly listening to the songs. It was a distinctive feature that Mo Fei had created without even intending to.

Accompanied by Mo Fei’s distinctive and captivating singing, the concert gradually approached its end. Before anyone realized it, the night had grown late.

Xixi didn’t have enough energy to listen to the entire concert. She’d played all afternoon and hadn’t even taken a nap at noon, so as she listened, the little girl had somehow fallen asleep in her father’s warm embrace without even realizing it.

The VIP box wasn’t enclosed. Although they were in Yangcheng, the spring night was still a little chilly. Fortunately, Yang Yi had prepared in advance. He asked Yang Huan to take a small blanket out of her bag and cover the little girl with it.

Yang Yi tucked the edges of the blanket around her so the night breeze wouldn’t slip in through the gap around Xixi’s neck. Every now and then, he lowered his head to look at the little face resting against his chest. Beneath her closed eyelids, her long eyelashes curled up slightly. She was so lovely that he couldn’t help feeling protective of her.

Now this was a sleeping beauty!

Looking at the little girl sleeping so sweetly, Yang Yi suddenly wanted to pinch her delicate little nose, but he was afraid of disturbing her peaceful slumber, so he had to give up the idea.

But at this moment, the fans’ voices suddenly reached Yang Yi’s ears. He wouldn’t have paid them any mind if they’d been chanting something else, but they were chanting his name!

“Yang Yi! Yang Yi! Yang Yi!”

At first, the shouting was rather disorderly, and some people were even calling out “Mu Li’ang.” But in the end, it was as though an invisible force had brought them together. Their cries grew louder and more unified. “Yang Yi! Yang Yi!”

Yang Yi had no idea what was happening. Looking a little bewildered, he raised his head and glanced toward the stage.

At this moment, the on-site director, feeling a little mischievous, had the camera crane swing around and point toward Yang Yi, who was sitting in the VIP box.

Yang Yi’s figure appeared on the big screen, immediately setting off another round of cheers from the fans throughout the venue.

“What happened?” Yang Yi turned his head and looked at Yang Huan in confusion.

“They want you to go onstage and sing with Sister-in-law,” Yang Huan said with a smile.

As it turned out, the concert was nearing its end, and Mo Fei had announced that the next song would be her last.

But how could the fans who had waited all night for a duet by Yang Yi and Mo Fei possibly accept this? The tickets were all priced about the same, so how could the people at the Shanghai concert get to hear Yang Yi and Mo Fei sing, while they weren’t given the same treatment?

Although Mo Fei had already explained, when some people first started calling for Yang Yi to sing, that no performance by Yang Yi had been planned for this concert, they still continued shouting insistently.

What began as a few people stirring things up eventually turned into the entire crowd joining in.

Of course, this was much the same as how, at the end of every concert, some fans would keep shouting, “One more song!” because they couldn’t bear to leave. It was impossible to satisfy every fan’s wishes every time. Experienced stars could always gain their fans’ understanding through communication or by acting cute and pleading for forgiveness.

But this time, the fans weren’t shouting, “One more song!” Mo Fei, who lacked the ability to adapt to such situations, didn’t know how to use jokes and playful banter to cool the fans’ enthusiasm. On the big screen, she looked somewhat at a loss, helpless and alone.

How could Yang Yi bear to let her struggle like that?

Looking at Mo Fei’s troubled expression on the big screen, Yang Yi smiled faintly. He gently handed the sleeping Xixi over to Yang Huan, then stood up from the sofa.

“Quick, quick! Switch the camera over!” Seeing the movement in the VIP box, the on-site director excitedly shouted into his headset.

The big screen switched back to the camera crane’s feed. Yang Yi’s act of standing up was seen by all fifty thousand-plus fans.

“Whoa!” The fans erupted in excitement, already guessing what Yang Yi was about to do.

Because of the lighting, Mo Fei couldn’t see Yang Yi from the stage. But the commotion made her sense that something was happening, and she turned to look at the big screen.

On the screen, Yang Yi mouthed three words to her: “Wait for me!”

After saying that, he turned around and disappeared from the camera’s view.

Even if the fans couldn’t make out what he had said, they could guess what Yang Yi meant. They began talking excitedly and cheering.

The stage remained quiet while the audience below buzzed with excitement. That continued until Yang Yi finally emerged from backstage and walked onto the stage. He wore no makeup or fancy costume. He looked exactly as he had in the VIP box, except that he now held a microphone.

Even so, Yang Yi’s casual clothes went perfectly with Mo Fei’s jeans. Standing together onstage, the two of them looked every bit like a couple!

Mo Fei was already so deeply moved by Yang Yi that she could barely contain her emotions. As soon as he came up, she eagerly stepped forward and embraced him.

“Thank you!” Mo Fei whispered guiltily into Yang Yi’s ear. She felt that she was always causing trouble for him.

Yang Yi smiled, gently patted her waist, and said, “What are you talking about? Your business is my business, isn’t it?”

However, after Yang Yi came onstage, another problem arose: what song were they going to sing?

It couldn’t be “I Want to Sing Myself to You”, because they hadn’t rehearsed it, and the band in Yangcheng didn’t have the sheet music. They certainly couldn’t introduce another new song at such short notice, either.

Yang Yi and Mo Fei discussed it briefly and decided to follow the concert’s original program and sing Mo Fei’s planned final song together: “Love Me, Don’t Go”.

Fortunately, this song could be sung by both men and women. Although they hadn’t rehearsed together, Yang Yi and Mo Fei quickly agreed on how to divide the parts after just a few words: they would each sing a section, then sing the chorus together.

“Even now, I’m still the same. The loneliness of the night easily makes people sad…” As the music began and Yang Yi opened his mouth to sing, he was immediately met with a burst of cheers from the audience.

Although this song didn’t particularly showcase Yang Yi’s vocal skills, singing ability could be difficult to judge without a comparison. His slightly lazy vocal style gave the song a different feel from Mo Fei’s version. The difference lay not only in their male and female voices, but also in the way they conveyed the emotions. Of course, both versions sounded wonderful!

For the fans, this was already a tremendous surprise!

As the song continued, the understanding between Yang Yi and Mo Fei became increasingly apparent. Although they hadn’t rehearsed at all, a single glance was enough for either of them to understand what the other meant. They knew when to continue their own part and when to sing together in harmony, and not once did their lack of rehearsal lead to a mistake.

Their voices blended especially well when they sang together during the chorus. Yang Yi’s harmony didn’t interfere with Mo Fei’s singing. Instead, it complemented her voice at just the right moments, making her vocal timbre sound even more beautiful.

“These two really are perfect for each other. I hope they’ll always be happy together!” This was the sentiment shared by many fans.

Although they hadn’t brought out a new song, and although the impromptu duet wasn’t even a song particularly suited to being sung as a duet, the fans were already completely satisfied.

Finally, the concert came to an end amid the audience’s prolonged applause.

Mo Fei happily took Yang Yi’s hand, and the two walked off the stage side by side, accompanied by the fans’ blessings.

But that wasn’t the only happy thing that happened that night!
