House of Blood
Chapter 149: Sanctuary Intervention
The white light above the central fountain faded into a thin mist that hovered three feet above the wet courtyard paving.
The three chimes of the sanctuary bell continued to echo across the slate rooftops of Sector One, bringing the surrounding cadets, merchants, and faculty members to a complete standstill.
The twenty security marshals maintained their formation around Cell One, their drawn swords reflecting the fading radiance. Nobody dared advance. The sanctuary wards blazing across the courtyard had made one thing clear: whatever Gareth Vance intended to accomplish, he would not accomplish it without answering to the High Sanctuary.
From the western archway, four sanctuary guards entered the square.
They wore white linen tabards over polished silver plate armor, each carrying a quarterstaff tipped with a brass sun-crest. Their movements were measured and disciplined, their formation remaining intact as they approached the military cordon.
Walking between them was Saintess Seraphina.
Her pale hair was pinned with a silver clasp, and her white robes swept across the damp stone paving. Unlike the guards surrounding her, she carried no visible weapon. She did not need one.
Her blue eyes surveyed the scene.
First, the two unconscious marshals lying beside Valen’s boots.
Then Solene, whose drawn rapier remained pointed toward Gareth.
Finally, the blindfolded clerk standing motionless between them.
Seraphina stopped ten feet from the security circle.
Gareth Vance did not lower his broadsword. His grip tightened around its leather-wrapped hilt.
"Saintess Seraphina. This is a security intervention under military jurisdiction. The High Sanctuary holds no authority over the detention of suspected traitors."
Seraphina’s gaze remained on him.
"The High Sanctuary holds jurisdiction over bloodline verification procedures conducted within the Citadel boundaries, Security Marshal."
Her voice was soft, yet it carried effortlessly across the silent courtyard.
"High Marshal Valerius signed the sanctuary covenant three years ago. Any cadet or administrative officer accused of carrying a supposedly extinct royal bloodline must undergo sanctuary verification before physical restraints are applied."
Gareth exhaled sharply.
"The informant identified him by name! He admitted to being Valerian Prim Sanguis five seconds ago!"
"An oral statement made under the threat of immediate physical restraint is legally invalid under Article Four of the Citadel Code," Solene interjected.
Her rapier remained raised.
"If you intend to process my scribe under the name of a supposedly deceased royal, the verification must occur on sanctuary ground."
Gareth turned toward the surrounding marshals.
Twenty soldiers stood behind their interlocking shields, weapons drawn and ready. Yet none advanced against the four sanctuary guards.
The distinction was obvious. Gareth possessed the force to surround Cell One, but the High Sanctuary possessed the authority to halt his operation.
He looked back at Seraphina.
"And if the verification confirms his identity?"
"Then the appropriate authorities may proceed according to the covenant."
"And until then?"
"Until then, he remains under sanctuary protection."
Gareth’s jaw tightened.
"If he steps outside those doors without a cleared seal, I will have forty heavy vanguard units waiting at the gates."
Seraphina showed no visible reaction.
"The verification takes two hours."
She stepped past the nearest shield-bearer, stopping four feet from Valen.
"Scribe Valen. You will accompany the sanctuary guards to the High Temple."
Valen remained motionless.
Beneath his dark wool coat, the dark-mithril suppressor guard had stopped pulsing crimson. Its runes had settled into their usual pattern, maintaining a faint, cold vibration against his left forearm.
"I accept the verification protocol, Saintess."
His voice was flat and even.
Solene stepped closer, lowering her voice so the surrounding marshals could not hear.
"Valen. What is happening? Why did Gareth call you by that name?"
Valen turned his linen blindfold toward her.
"Gareth is reacting to information supplied by the library intruder. The name was introduced to force a premature confrontation before the trial finals."
"That doesn’t answer my question."
"No. It explains the timing."
Solene’s fingers tightened around her rapier.
"Is the name true?"
For the first time, her anger gave way to something more difficult to conceal.
Confusion.
Concern.
And the uncomfortable realization that the person standing beside her might have been a stranger all along.
"Are you Valerian Prim Sanguis?"
Valen held his leather equipment binder beneath his left arm.
"The sanctuary verification will produce an official document, Solene. Focus on Cell One’s preparation for the final trials in Sector B."
She stared at him for two seconds.
Then she slowly sheathed her rapier.
The sharp click sounded unusually loud in the silence.
"I’ll be waiting outside the sanctuary gates with Casper and Castor. If Gareth attempts to bypass protocol, Cell One will intervene."
"Understood."
Solene’s expression hardened again.
"Don’t mistake that for an answer."
"I wouldn’t."
She turned away before he could add anything else.
Valen followed Seraphina through the opening formation of sanctuary guards. The twenty security marshals parted reluctantly, their swords lowered to their hips as Gareth watched the procession pass.
His furious gaze followed Valen until the blindfold disappeared beneath the western archway.
Ten minutes later, the heavy brass doors of the High Sanctuary closed behind them.
The Lantern Jubilee became a distant murmur.
Inside, silver oil lamps illuminated white granite walls and soaring ceiling arches. The air was warm, carrying the faint fragrance of lavender and crushed bay leaves. Intricate silver inscriptions ran along the chamber’s pillars, their delicate radiance revealing the sanctuary’s layered protective wards.
Seraphina led Valen into the inner sanctum.
A raised marble dais occupied the center of the chamber. Beyond it, tall stained-glass windows depicted the founding saints of Lumeria, their faces illuminated by the lanterns outside.
Seraphina stopped at the dais and turned.
She dismissed the four guards with a brief gesture.
They bowed before withdrawing into the outer corridor. The heavy doors closed behind them with a muted thud.
For several seconds, neither person spoke.
Then Seraphina’s shoulders slumped.
Her breathing became uneven, and her blue eyes flickered violently.
The color darkened into deep violet.
A thin strand of black mana curled around the sleeves of her white robes.
"That was too close, Valerian."
Elizabeth’s voice emerged through Seraphina’s throat, dry and grating.
She took two steps forward, her bare feet making soft sounds against the cold marble.
"Gareth Vance is an idiot, but he has twenty heavy vanguard units waiting outside. If those manacles had locked around your wrists, their suppression current might have forced your guard to respond."
"The suppression current in standard military manacles carries approximately fifty volts," Valen replied. "The dark-mithril alloy can absorb considerably more before kinetic feedback occurs."
Elizabeth stared at him.
"I am not talking about voltage, Scribe!"
The black mana around her sleeves thickened.
"I am talking about the Mad Doctor! He used the library intruder to place your name directly into Gareth’s hands!"
"I am aware."
"Then stop speaking as though we’re reviewing a defective shipment!"
Valen remained still.
"The Mad Doctor wants the High Council to isolate me. A military tribunal would transfer me to Sector Zero’s lower holding vaults, where his extraction lines are already installed."
Elizabeth’s expression sharpened.
"Exactly. He doesn’t care whether Gareth believes you’re a traitor. He wants you removed from the academy, separated from your allies, and delivered somewhere he controls."
She moved closer.
"He wants your pure blood to complete his vessel. Whatever interest he has in Xul’Gorgoth’s demon-lord project, he has another objective. Your core is the anchor his artificial creation requires."
"The artificial vessel in Sub-Vault Seven was destroyed."
"Sub-Vault Seven was one laboratory out of three."
Valen’s posture did not change, but his fingers tightened slightly around the equipment binder.
Elizabeth noticed.
"Did you really believe an alchemical master would spend ten years harvesting cadet blood to build only one vessel?"
She leaned toward him.
"There’s a secondary chamber beneath Sector One. Directly beneath the High Marshal’s administrative complex."
For several seconds, the sanctum remained silent.
The silver inscriptions along the walls glimmered faintly as Elizabeth’s mana disturbed the surrounding wards.
Valen considered the information.
"The secondary chamber requires the same bloodline catalyst to ignite its core."
"Which is why he arranged tonight’s little performance."
Elizabeth’s voice dropped into a razor-sharp whisper.
"He knew you would protect Mirain if House Sanguis became a target. He knew you’d step out of the shadows rather than let your classmates be dragged into another subterranean laboratory. Every investigation brings you closer to his traps, and every trap forces you to reveal a little more."
Her violet eyes narrowed.
"You are walking directly into his calculations, Valerian."
"Calculations can be redirected."
"How?"
Elizabeth spread her hands.
"You have Gareth Vance waiting outside with forty soldiers, Mirain investigating your birth registry, and Solene standing beside you with a rapier. The whole Citadel is tightening around you."
"Gareth operates through administrative orders," Valen replied. "He cannot proceed with a formal arrest without the appropriate authorization from Principal Elias or High Marshal Valerius."
"And you think a piece of paper will stop the Mad Doctor?"
"No. It will delay Gareth."
Valen adjusted the leather binder beneath his arm.
"That delay gives us time to identify the secondary chamber and determine whether its extraction network is active."
Elizabeth studied him, her expression caught between irritation and reluctant interest.
Before she could respond, the violet hue drained from her eyes.
The black mana receded from Seraphina’s sleeves.
She staggered, pressing one hand against her chest as she regained control of her body.
"I..."
She drew a deep, shuddering breath.
"I can issue the certificate."
Her voice trembled slightly from the strain of Elizabeth’s emergence.
"The divine bloodline basin can be calibrated to read surface mana signatures rather than dormant hereditary markers. It will show no active Sanguis death aura."
Valen inclined his head.
"That will address the immediate military summons."
Seraphina looked at him with quiet anxiety.
"But it won’t prove that the name is false."
"No. It will establish that the evidence presented does not satisfy the sanctuary’s criteria for detention."
She lowered her eyes.
"And after the trial finals? When the Grandmaster Festival begins?"
"The Mad Doctor will make his final move during the festival."
Valen turned toward the stained-glass windows. Rain tapped steadily against the panes, distorting the lanterns outside into blurred streaks of gold.
"He will target Mirain publicly, presenting her as the primary blood key. He expects me to intervene."
Seraphina’s fingers curled against her robes.
"And what will you do?"
Valen stood perfectly still.
For a moment, the calm administrative clerk seemed to disappear beneath the weight of something far older and more dangerous.
"I will let him complete his initial move."
His voice remained quiet.
"Then I will eliminate the network."
Seraphina stared at him.
Outside, the sanctuary bells fell silent.
And beneath Sector One, somewhere below the High Marshal’s administrative complex, an unseen mechanism continued counting down toward its next activation.
