How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World

Chapter 262: The Weaving of Fate

After getting the information from Sarah, Wei Chen felt like he wanted to bang his head against something.

As a former American, he knew how government and politics worked, especially when it came to the military and national defense.

The moment they learned about the "Discovery of the New World," they would definitely try to reach this side. The same playbook from the colonial era would certainly be repeated again, but this time... it would be far more devastating.

Also... wasn’t this exactly how a stupid accident started in so many movies? Someone discovers a fascinating and impossible-to-understand portal, or some unexplained and unrecorded ruin, with absolutely zero knowledge of what it actually is.

So what do they do?

They send a team of scientists alongside the military, led by some arrogant higher-up who makes sure the entire expedition goes sideways because of his own personal motives.

Since he had already been reborn here, he shouldn’t worry too much about his former homeland. But still... that lingering sense of attachment in the back of his mind kept nagging at him, telling him not to let things escalate.

He knew how powerful the people on this side were. If some psycho from this world managed to cross over to the other side, even weakened by the absence of spiritual qi...

They would still have more than enough power to decimate an entire city block, and the government couldn’t exactly use heavy ordnance like a MOAB to bomb the bastard either.

Who in their right mind would use explosives like that against a target standing in the middle of a city full of civilians? Small arms like rifles and shotguns wouldn’t be enough either.

It would be like trying to fight a miniature Superman using nothing but conventional weapons. The destruction a cultivator could cause on the other side would be far more devastating than a single kaiju.

"Ugh... this is definitely a disaster in the making," Wei Chen muttered to himself as he continued writing the report.

"Are you having some difficulty, Lord Husband?" Dream Butterfly came over and asked as she poured him a fresh cup of tea she had just brewed.

"Yeah... something like that," Wei Chen said, letting out a weary sigh.

No... to be honest, the reason he was so worried about the other side was a bit personal.

His parents still lived on the other side, along with Cindy Liu. Even if he didn’t want to appear before them, it didn’t mean he wasn’t worried about their safety.

Yeah, of course. The Lord of Death, his boss, had already done something to him that made him better at dealing with homesickness. His feelings toward his parents and his ex were like a lingering, distant memory.

But the moment he learned that he could go back to the other side, those feelings became stronger.

That lingering feeling, like a distant memory, was no longer so distant anymore. It seemed to be drawing closer, occupying more and more of his thoughts.

The feeling... it grew louder and louder, constantly bothering him.

"Yu’er, let me ask you something..." Wei Chen began. "Would you still help your old home even though you’ve long since left it? Even if the people there have already moved on without you?"

He asked as he looked into the eyes of his goddess-like wife, who stood silently, giving him her full attention.

"There’s a saying, ’The moon shines brightest in one’s hometown.’ I’m not you, Lord Husband, and I don’t know the details about you or your hometown. But there’s one question you should ask yourself. If you ignore it, will you still be able to sleep peacefully at night?"

Hearing his wife’s advice, Wei Chen let out a sigh. He felt much calmer. Maybe he had simply wanted someone else to tell him that.

He decided that he would interfere if necessary. For now, though, he would let nature take its course. Since they were going to build a gate on this side, he imagined no one here would be stupid enough to try causing trouble.

Wei Chen decided to put all of this into a report and send it to his boss, letting both of them decide on the policy and the bigger picture. As for himself, he would continue with his plan to reduce the death rate of the people on this side.

— Meanwhile —

Sarah had already taken a bath, changed into a local dress, and was trying to familiarize herself with this world.

After getting her personal belongings back, she stepped out of the personal tent that Wei Chen’s people had set up for her and wandered around, taking lots of pictures and filming everything she saw on this side.

"Hm hmm~ Once I’m back, that baldy is going to be shocked by the news about this world!" Sarah hummed a tune as she continued taking pictures.

But then she paused. There was a particular sight that made her stop and take a second look.

She was caught off guard by a certain gadget one of the warriors in black armor was using.

Its shape was exactly like a phone. A smartphone from her own world.

The black-armored warriors were chatting with each other while looking at the content on their screens.

They laughed at what they were seeing as though it was something entertaining.

That piqued her interest.

Sarah slowly inched toward the two warriors in black armor who were enjoying the content on their screens. She then took a peek at what they were watching.

Of course, the two warriors had noticed Sarah a long time ago, but since she was only a mortal and an honored guest, they didn’t try to conceal anything from her. They didn’t even bother covering their screens, letting her satisfy her curiosity.

On the screen, she saw Wei Chen, the guy who had just interrogated her, talking enthusiastically to an audience.

The content seemed to be some kind of adventure program, with Wei Chen discussing various things. Even though she had no idea what he was talking about because her Chinese sucked, it was obvious from the reactions of the two warriors that it was quite fun and entertaining.

"Wait... this world has smartphones!? It even has streaming platforms?" Sarah muttered to herself.

This fantasy Chinese world had things like this? Did that mean it had the internet too?

If so, she needed to reevaluate this world’s level of civilization.

Hmmm... too bad she couldn’t speak Chinese. Otherwise, it would be great if she could interview some of them and get a scoop.

As Sarah wandered around, looking at one thing after another, her eyes landed on a particular person.

He was a tall man of African descent, with the kind of muscular build that looked like it belonged to a professional bodybuilder. His face was calm, mature, and carried the roughness of a seasoned veteran.

"You! Yo! You! You there! Big guy!" Sarah spoke in English as she tried to get the attention of the man in local clothing.

It was none other than Bob.

Bob looked around before noticing Sarah. He still remembered the language she was speaking, even though he hadn’t used it in a very long time.

"You’re talking to me?" he asked, pointing at himself.

"Yeah, you. I’m talking to you, big guy." Sarah hopped over with a smile. She had finally found someone she could talk to other than that punchable-faced Wei Chen.

— Immortal Realm —

In an inconspicuous immortal cave, a place filled with pure and densely condensed spiritual qi, a lone figure wearing a golden mask stood before three enormous mirrors, each the size of a building.

Each mirror represented one state of time: the past, the present, and the future.

The mirror on his left showed the past, the one in the middle the present, and the one on his right the future... or at least... the most likely future.

The man was none other than the Fate Weaving Sovereign, Lian Cheng’s nemesis, the one who had killed him and sent him to this world.

He was now looking into the past of the people who had interacted with the other side of the portal.

The Fate Weaving Sovereign could clearly see the past of President Jonah Crump. He had once been nothing more than a simple businessman who got lucky through his marriage and entered the political scene because of his wife.

The man had won the election by a landslide thanks to his conservative stance and fierce America First policy.

He then looked at the present. The president was fending off various countries that wanted to get their hands on the information and benefits surrounding the carcass of the kaiju known as Leviathan.

As for the mirror on his right, the one that represented the future...

The future was uncertain. It constantly shifted between a war of annihilation and isolation, yet neither outcome was fixed. There were other possibilities as well, but even he, the Fate Weaving Sovereign, could not see through all of them.

He could only see the most likely outcome.

And to ensure that outcome would benefit him, there was a need to weave the strings of fate just a little.
