How to Bring Common Sense to Xianxia World
Chapter 325: Lian Cheng: A Sudden Happiness
While the Fate Weaving Sovereign was in the middle of recuperating, a change occurred in the River of Fate.
It was just a small change... like a stone dropped into a river. This change was negligible, but... many stones were dropping, and dropping, and dropping.
It was as if hundreds, or even thousands, of people were throwing these small stones into the river.
These changes were so minor that even the Fate Weaving Sovereign himself, the self-proclaimed master of fate who manipulated fate and waded through its river with ease, was unable to notice them.
Though... if the Fate Weaving Sovereign were at the peak of his condition, he might have been able to notice the changes. But even then, he could only notice them. As for stopping the changes, that was still up for debate.
But there was no "what if."
The Fate Weaving Sovereign now... was like a man who had built a dam across a great river, a man who could manipulate the dam and decide how much water he should keep and how much he should release.
Then, he proclaimed himself the master of this river. Nothing in this great river could escape his foresight.
But that would only be true if he were not cooped up in the hospital.
If he were within the office or watchtower at the dam, he might have noticed the tiny changes caused by dozens of people throwing stones into the river.
He might even have been able to prevent the changes in his vicinity if he came down from his ivory tower to shoo them away or prevent them from coming near his dam.
But... as it stood, the river was long, and it came down from the high mountains far upstream from the place where he had built his dam.
The people from the upper river and the lower river were all throwing tiny stones into the water.
Unending stones.
Many tiny changes were causing a great change to form within the River of Fate, the very river upon which the Fate Weaving Sovereign relied.
It was sucking away his power like a parasite.
Then... he started to notice the change.
The power started to slow down.
At first, the power that came from the River of Fate to heal him came pouring down like a waterfall. Then, the waterfall started to slow down.
It quickly degraded into a shower, then... tap water, and then the kind of tap water one might find in the countryside, where it came out only at certain times, and with some bad luck, might not come out at all.
The Fate Weaving Sovereign was alarmed by the change. He quickly used whatever power he had regained through his recuperation to peer into the River of Fate and see what had happened.
Then... he saw it.
People who should have died because of the power of the Fate-Twisting Formation had survived.
Villains and evil people who should have gotten away with what they had done were caught and punished by society.
Some lost all of their reputations overnight and were mercilessly hunted down by the enforcers.
Some were hunted by their own peers, former collaborators, and friends who had finally seen what they truly were.
Many people who had originally been fated to survive and die of old age had survived the calamity, and some whose fate had originally been cut short before they could contribute to society had survived and introduced many great changes in the future.
The changes...
Many of them had solidified the River of Fate, making it harder and harder for him to manipulate.
The River was becoming fiercer and fiercer.
The streams were now crashing against a dam.
It was only a matter of time before his dam cracked because of the great changes coming from the upper river, causing the flow of the river to change.
Now...
His dam was in danger.
"What!? What is happening!?" the Fate Weaving Sovereign blurted out in alarm.
He stopped recuperating.
Now was not the time for that.
He had to stop this as soon as possible!
The Fate Weaving Sovereign stood up from the formation. He had only recovered to 70% of his peak strength.
He really didn’t want to take the risk because if anything went wrong, all of his investment during his recuperation would go to waste, and he would need to start from scratch once again.
But if he left things as they were, he might become unable to manipulate the River of Fate anymore.
He quickly went to the Mirror of Fate and took out a golden mask, the artifact that helped him peer into and manipulate the River of Fate. He needed it because this was not something he could casually do with only 70% of his strength.
No, even if he were at his peak, he would still wear it just to be on the safe side.
And now, with the mask’s help, he only had the qualification to manipulate the River of Fate himself.
The Fate Weaving Sovereign quickly formed a hand seal.
The River of Fate appeared before his eyes through the Mirror of Fate, its trillions of threads weaving together into a great river.
He could feel it in his body.
The pressure.
The uncomfortable pressure of the laws of Heaven and Earth, which would punish anyone who dared to touch or manipulate the River of Fate.
If he hadn’t had the mask on, he might have suffered a backlash and been forced to recuperate from the beginning once again. Worse, it might even hamper his future growth!
With the River of Fate before him, he used his spiritual sense to wade through it, trying to peer through the countless threads and find the beginning of the change.
Who, which person, or what kind of event outside of his calculations had caused this great change?
If it were some unknown incident, like a butterfly flapping its wings, he would kill that butterfly.
If it were someone, even if it were the Immortal Emperor, he would kill them as well.
At this point, if it were a demon obstructing him, he would kill the demon.
If it were a Buddha trying to stop him, he would kill the Buddha.
As he waded through the River of Fate, resisting its currents and the pressure bearing down on him, his mind wandered.
Who, or what kind of thing, had caused this change?
Was it the Immortal Emperor?
The Underworld Lord?
But the Underworld Lord was an entity outside the River of Fate. As an entity outside the River of Fate, that guy shouldn’t be able to change the River of Fate either.
Then...
Months passed.
Still immersed in the state of wading through the River of Fate, his power dwindled further and further.
Now, he only had 50% of his power left.
The River of Fate was growing fiercer and fiercer.
If he still couldn’t find the cause...
He would be a goner.
As he was about to give up and use another means to investigate, the face of a certain person suddenly appeared.
A man was sitting inside a meeting room, chatting with three silhouettes. The identities of those three unknown entities remained unclear, as he didn’t have enough power to peer through them. He could only see the one who had started the chain of events.
The face belonged to Wei Chen!
"Wei Chen! That damn Heaven’s Chosen!"
The Fate Weaving Sovereign roared in anger.
It was this damn Heaven’s Chosen again!
How many times would this... this bastard foil his plans?!
With anger clouding his eyes, a lapse in concentration occurred.
Pfffttttt!
Like a slap from a giant hand, he was violently pushed out of the River of Fate by the laws of Heaven and Earth.
His body flew backward and crashed into the wall of his immortal cave. Blood splattered as his bones and internal organs shattered into pieces.
Pain rampaged throughout his body.
And worse of all...
A crack...
A crack had formed in his Dao Heart.
The Fate Weaving Sovereign quickly pulled off his golden mask and produced a life-saving elixir from his storage ring before popping it into his mouth.
A cool sensation spread through his body, soothing his pain as his injuries began to mend.
But only his physical body began to heal.
His soul and Dao Heart?
They needed time to heal.
Time that he could not afford to waste...
With this injury on top of his old one...
Now...
His power had been reduced to only 30% of his peak.
"Wei Chen-------!!!!"
The Fate Weaving Sovereign screamed, pouring all of his hatred and resentment into that single cry.
— Meanwhile - Deathstar —
Within the lounge for officers and VIP guests inside the Death Star, Wei Chen was having a drink with Lian Cheng, who was now the director of the Research Institute in the Underworld.
Lian Cheng was drinking a new kind of drink called tequila. It was a new kind of beverage from Earth, and its unique, sweet taste gave him a new sense of adventure.
It was much like the innovations coming from the Innovation Department in the Underworld, where he now served as a director.
Then suddenly...
He felt a surge of happiness.
It was as if some bastard he hated had finally gotten what he deserved.
But... it must have just been his imagination.
