Chapter 333: Chapter 180: Murder Case! ‘Ghost Knocking on the Door!
The feng shui in Jiangsan City wasn’t great.
Wang Chao had professionally verified as much.
What?
What were his professional qualifications, you ask?
Well, that was a complicated matter, and a difficult one to explain. Aside from starting a business, his greatest wish in life was to find a philosopher or scientist who could explain it all.
Of course, he had never said any of this out loud, keeping it all buried in his heart.
Naturally, Zhang Min didn’t know any of this.
At that moment, she was brimming with energy as she tidied up her new apartment.
The apartment seemed to be a new plaything in her hands, and she was gradually getting it into perfect order.
However, before she could finish…
BEEP… BEEP… BEEP…
A phone began to ring.
“Hey, Xiao Min, have you made it to Jiangsan City?”
Zhang Niu’s boisterous, gruff voice sounded from the other end of the line.
Zhang Min seemed to remember something. A little exasperated, she nevertheless responded patiently.
“I’m here. I’ve rented an apartment close to where the business is.”
“Oh, and I won’t be coming home for the New Year.”
The distance between Jiangsan City and the Capital City wasn’t close, but it wasn’t terribly far, either. The flight itself wasn’t long. Since nearly eight hours had passed since her plane had taken off, it was obvious Zhang Niu wasn’t calling just to check on her whereabouts.
‘So that means…’
“Not coming back? All right… By the way, how’s Xiao Wang?”
Zhang Niu asked, beating around the bush.
Zhang Min rolled her eyes.
“Him? He’s great. Very enthusiastic, smart, an excellent businessman. And he has a good relationship with the local police.”
“I’m not asking about all that. I mean, what do you think of him as a person?”
“I was talking about him as a person.”
“You little rascal, you’re just playing dumb, aren’t you!?”
Zhang Niu was speechless. Thinking of his grown-up, unmarried daughter, his face, on the other end of the line, was filled with worry.
“I don’t understand.”
Zhang Min said with a deadpan expression, “I came to Jiangsan City for business, to build a brand. Wang Chao is my partner. Isn’t it perfectly normal for me to give you a report on his character?”
That’s right.
She was being pressured to get married…
Normally, business people of their stature were fond of strategic marriages, but Zhang Niu was different.
His thinking wasn’t dictated by profit, and Zhang Min was a quintessential career woman herself.
And so, at the age of twenty-five, she had yet to date a single person.
As the saying goes, to conquer a man, you must conquer his heart. It was the same for a career woman, only the method was to be stronger than her.
But… her family was in the Capital City, her uncle was a squad leader in the Special Fifth Bureau, and her family owned one of the country’s top telecommunications companies.
Who could possibly be stronger than her?
Who could possibly be worthy of Zhang Min’s attention?
This led to Zhang Min having incredibly high standards, so she threw her heart and soul into developing her business.
At first, Zhang Niu thought this was great, but then he blinked…
‘This isn’t right!’
If this kept up, it would be too late! He might not even live long enough to hold a grandchild!
She was twenty-five now, soon to be twenty-six. If he waited a couple more years, would she be getting married in her late thirties? Or even her forties?
And so.
Zhang Niu was getting anxious.
But Zhang Min wasn’t about to give him a chance to get worked up.
“Besides… you two have practically become sworn brothers. The only thing missing is the ceremony. He calls me his ‘dear niece’ now.”
Zhang Min said lightly as she continued to sort her clothes.
“‘Dear niece’?”
Zhang Niu’s voice went up an octave, his confusion palpable.
“That’s right. Going by seniority, I should be calling him Uncle,” Zhang Min said.
“Wait, when did we become sworn brothers!?”
“That’s a question for you… Anyway, I’m not coming home this year. If there’s nothing important, stop nagging me. I’m hanging up.”
With that, Zhang Min hung up the phone.
After she finished cleaning the apartment, she wasn’t in any hurry. Instead, she pulled out a book.
It was a law book, and she began to read it intently.
In a way, law books were really just guides on how to get rich.
Once you carefully studied every legal statute, you would discover a vast gold mine of gray areas just waiting to be exploited.
For example?
The most direct example would be lawyers. They could use legal loopholes to pick apart a plaintiff’s case, all for a hefty fee.
Until…
“KNOCK KNOCK KNOCK…”
A sudden knock at the door broke Zhang Min from her thoughts.
“Who is it?”
Zhang Min paused, getting up from the sofa and calling out as she walked toward the door.
‘The only people I know in Jiangsan City are Wang Chao and Xu Huo. Xu Huo doesn’t know my address, and Wang Chao just left. So, who could be knocking…?’
“I’m your neighbor from across the hall.”
A voice replied from outside.
‘A neighbor?’
Suspicious, Zhang Min peered through the peephole. She saw an old woman standing outside, holding a basket filled with vegetables and smiling kindly.
CREAK…
Zhang Min opened the door. The old woman first peered suspiciously into the apartment.
Seeing nothing, she turned her gaze to Zhang Min.
“Young lady, you must be the new tenant in 502.”
“I’m your neighbor from 501, across the hall. I live with my old husband. Feel free to come over and visit anytime you’re not busy.”
“Thank you.”
Zhang Min said politely. She was about to turn away when the old woman stopped her, looking hesitant.
“Is there anything else?”
The old woman was stooped, her hair was white, and her expression was complicated. After a moment of hesitation, she asked:
“There’s… nothing in your apartment, is there?”
Zhang Min was confused.
“‘Nothing’ like what?”
“I mean, you haven’t seen any… nasty things, have you?”
“Like ghosts, for instance.”
the old woman said in a grim, low voice.
“We should believe in science,” Zhang Min replied with a smile.
“What about people? Have you seen any shadows of people?”
Zhang Min shook her head again. Then, she paused. Instead of turning to go back inside, she asked:
