HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!
Chương 48: Chapter 47 - Precise Room.
[Chapter Size: 3700 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
In the end, all the students left the classroom. Severus had to stay behind, as the professor had asked him to remain for a few more minutes.
He watched his classmates leaving the room, each one carefully carrying their flowerpot in their arms. As they passed by, some still cast glances at Severus, but he kept his attention focused on their plants, letting his eyes pass over each one calmly, as if hoping they would all be very well taken care of.
"Hey." A voice called out beside him, and Severus turned his gaze toward the Hufflepuff girl. "What happened to you?" Amelia Bones looked at him curiously.
Like everyone else, she wanted to understand Severus's sudden changes. "If I told you I simply woke up with different eyes, would you believe me?" he said with a small closed-lip smile.
"No?" she replied.
"That really is what happened, but it doesn't matter, does it? It's not like I have to explain myself to everyone here..." Severus said with a shrug. There was no harshness in his tone, only the truth, spoken in a very calm voice.
"I guess you're right," Amelia murmured.
"Ah! Please come here, Mr. Snape, and bring your Auroria Flower with you," the professor called from her desk.
Severus stood up from his seat and walked over to her, placing the flowerpot on the desk. The professor observed the plant for a few moments, but before saying anything, she turned her attention to the people standing behind Severus.
"You may go now, Miss Greengrass... Miss Bones."
The two girls, who clearly wanted to hear the conversation that was about to take place, did not hide their disappointment. Even so, they obeyed and headed for the exit.
Severus glanced back briefly, receiving one last intense look from Amelia Bones. Greengrass's interest surprised him, since they had never interacted before.
"Well... I apologize if I'm keeping you from something. I know you don't have any more classes today, but I'd still like to talk with you for a bit, Mr. Snape, if you're available. After all, what you did today is something that, as I said before, I've never seen in my entire life." She paused briefly before continuing.
"You said your abilities awakened, and then suddenly your eyes changed color..." Curiosity was written all over her face.
Professor Sprout had never exactly been a bad person toward Severus. Even so, she had always shown a certain degree of caution around him. Like many professors, she knew of his reputation for researching Dark Magic and, for years, had viewed him with a certain amount of suspicion.
Even so, at that moment, her surprise and curiosity seemed to outweigh whatever prejudice or suspicion she might still have harbored.
It wasn't as though Severus had any obligation to tell her the truth. On the other hand, it might prove useful. As he had thought before, many students, and even part of the castle's faculty, would begin watching him much more closely after that day. Questions would arise. Rumors would start to spread. Some students might even do something foolish while trying to uncover the source of his changes.
He had already expected that from some people, but it would become a problem if their numbers increased too much... Perhaps it would be a good idea if at least one professor knew some kind of explanation.
And it was precisely when Severus was about to open his mouth to answer that an explosion of blue flames erupted beside him. Both of them immediately turned their eyes toward the source of the light.
Articuno appeared through his characteristic form of apparition. At the very same moment, the temperature of the room seemed to drop by several degrees because of his presence.
The enormous bird calmly moved forward and landed on Severus's shoulder. 'Tell her about the Awakening. In my time, some children awakened a special kind of magic around the age of fifteen. Some of them weren't even witches or wizards before that; their magic simply awakened. We called those people users of Ancient Magic. You can use that to explain your changes.' Articuno transmitted those words directly into Severus's mind.
Meanwhile, the professor remained completely astonished, staring at the beautiful blue bird resting peacefully on the boy's shoulder.
"An Ice Phoenix... Just as Professor Slughorn described during lunch," the professor said enthusiastically as she admired the magnificent bird.
"Yes. Articuno, Professor. He's my current companion, just as the Headmaster has his phoenix," Severus said, while the Ice Phoenix displayed a proud expression, raising his head and puffing out his chest upon hearing the compliment.
"Oh... So beautiful. Truly beautiful," she said, completely enchanted.
However, she couldn't admire the bird for very long before turning her attention back to Severus.
He decided to answer her. "About my change, Professor... I think I can explain a little. I'm fifteen years old, and there was an Awakening within me during these holidays. I honestly don't know how to explain it. I simply woke up one day and realized I had changed. My eyes changed, my magic also changed, even though my magical signature remained the same. Besides that... even my own thoughts seem different."
He paused briefly.
"I don't know exactly what happened, but there was certainly a great change within me."
The professor nodded slowly, clearly wanting to understand more. "And these changes with plants? Could you tell me a little more? I must admit I'm quite curious."
Severus thought for a few seconds before answering. "Well... I can feel them much more than before. I can tell when they're happy or sad, when they're about to die or when they're close to blooming. Once I realized that, I started helping them grow naturally. I can heal them, make them blossom, among other things..."
He smiled faintly. "It ended up earning me some money. I found a job in the wizarding world during the summer holidays and started growing some plants to sell in Diagon Alley. I made more than eight hundred Galleons by selling rare plants for prices far lower than the market rate. After all... I'm just a half-blood boy."
Upon hearing that, the professor couldn't hide her surprise. Her expression softened, almost showing pity. The boy worked during the holidays and used that gift only to earn money.
But something else impressed her even more... Eight hundred Galleons. That was not an amount a student would normally be able to earn during a single summer.
In fact, it was roughly what a Hogwarts professor would receive during that same period.
"That's incredible... You really earned all of that on your own?" she asked, just to make sure.
Severus nodded. "I did. But don't ask how much I still have. I barely saved any of it. I reinvested almost everything into knowledge, materials, and developing my abilities."
The professor couldn't help but smile faintly upon hearing that. "That is very impressive, Mr. Snape. You've returned full of surprises."
"Professor... if I were able to grow some rare plants here at Hogwarts, would it be possible to sell them through you?" Severus asked curiously.
He could simply Apparate to Diagon Alley and use the trips to Hogsmeade as an excuse, since he knew the Headmaster would probably notice whenever he left the castle.
But perhaps he wouldn't even need to leave Hogwarts if he found someone willing to buy his plants.
Professor Sprout fell silent for a few moments, deep in thought. Then, a smile slowly appeared on her face. "Of course. I know a few friends of mine who would certainly be interested in some plants, and if you can do the same thing you did with the Auroria Flower, I wouldn't doubt their quality. If you want to sell them, I can negotiate a price below what the shops charge, since they would be sold to suppliers, who would then sell them to the stores. If that isn't a problem for you. But remember, the quality has to be just as good as the Auroria Flower you showed today," she replied.
Severus nodded in satisfaction. The two continued talking for a few more minutes while Severus spoke about the plants he had cultivated during the holidays, their nature, and even some observations he had made regarding how he could improve his cultivation even further.
The professor nodded repeatedly, clearly pleased with the conversation. She had never imagined she would be able to discuss Herbology at that level with a sixth-year student. Although Severus had to pretend to be naïve a few times.
Shortly afterward, Severus left the classroom. He walked through the castle corridors before finally stepping out into the gardens.
Late afternoon had already arrived. Many students were enjoying their free time outside. Some played across the lawns, others chatted near the Black Lake, while a few wandered around the Hogwarts grounds.
'So why did you show up?' Severus asked Articuno curiously.
The Ice Phoenix shrugged. 'I wanted to stretch my wings.'
'And how is Heloísa?' he asked.
'She was in the library when I left. Her class ended early.'
'I see... She seemed a little down today. Did something happen after noon?'
Severus still hadn't had the chance to ask Heloísa why she had seemed so discouraged during lunch.
'Some students called her Mudblood during the next class. They kept mocking her throughout this afternoon's lessons.'
'First-year Slytherin students?' Severus asked.
Articuno gave a mental nod.
'I see... I'll have to deal with that later,' Severus murmured as the two of them headed down one of the corridors toward the outside of the castle.
They soon reached the main courtyard, with its fountain and entrance gate, where many students were enjoying the late afternoon before dinner.
Severus raised his eyes toward one of Hogwarts' towers. An idea came to his mind. 'Hey... Can you carry me up there?'
'Of course,' Articuno replied immediately.
The Ice Phoenix began beating his enormous wings. Severus grabbed one of his talons, and Articuno effortlessly lifted him into the air, despite the obvious difference in their sizes.
The two of them flew past the upper floors of the castle until they reached one of the rooftops.
Several students had clearly seen Articuno perched on Severus's shoulder, since he had not been invisible at any point after they left Herbology class. Many pointed toward the enormous blue bird flying above Hogwarts while carrying the Slytherin student.
Severus, however, paid them no attention. A few moments later, Articuno landed gently on one of the rooftops.
From up there, Severus had a privileged view of Hogwarts. It was the first time he had ever seen the castle from that angle. He sat down and remained there in silence for several minutes.
'What's bothering you?' Articuno asked.
'It's not what's bothering me,' Severus replied as he gazed at the Black Lake between the towers. From there, he could see students climbing staircases through the windows and walking along the corridors. No broomsticks crossed the skies at that moment. 'I'm trying to imagine what this year at this place will be like.'
He remained silent for a few seconds. 'There are a few things I want to do here, Articuno.'
The bird stayed silent, waiting for him to continue.
"First, I need a place to conduct my experiments." Severus spoke those words aloud instead of thinking them.
There were his books, his projects, his studies on golems, and even a few Muggle weapons he intended to develop.
"Nix."
At that very moment, a small house-elf appeared beside him.
"You called for me, Master?" she asked, curious and clearly excited.
"First of all, hello again." Severus smiled before pulling a scroll out of his ring. "I need you to tell me something. Are there more places in Hogwarts than the ones shown on this map?" He unrolled the castle map across the rooftop.
It wasn't the enchanted map he had given Heloísa, but one of the many ordinary maps of Hogwarts that he had purchased to study the castle's structure and use in his enchantment experiments before creating the one now in his friend's possession.
The house-elf quickly stepped closer and began examining every floor drawn on the map. "Many rooms are missing. Hogwarts is much larger than what this paper shows, Master."
Severus displayed a faint smile. "Tell me... If I wanted to find a place where I could work without even the Headmaster coming to bother me, what place would you recommend?" The house-elf thought for a few moments.
"There are several secret rooms within Hogwarts. Rooms that not even the Headmaster knows about. Master could work peacefully in them." She pointed to a section of the map.
"There's a hidden passage beneath the Grand Staircase. There's also an old storage room where we house-elves keep all of Hogwarts' lost objects."
Severus immediately turned to the elf in surprise. "What is that place like? Do you put every lost object there since Hogwarts was founded?" he asked curiously.
The elf nodded. "Yes. When I came to Hogwarts, the other house-elves told me that since the castle's founding, every object whose owner was never found ends up being placed there. Most of them never leave that place again..."
She thought for a moment before continuing. "We almost never manage to find the owners. So everything is stored. I don't really know how it works. I only know there's a large chest in a special room that only house-elves can enter. We simply throw everything in there."
Severus immediately became intrigued. "Can you take me there?" He had planned to find somewhere quiet to read his books a little longer, but that had just completely captured his attention.
"Of course. But I can't teleport Master through the castle."
"That's alright. Articuno can do that," Severus explained.
The elf nodded before disappearing. Articuno immediately enveloped the two of them in an explosion of blue flames.
The next instant, Severus appeared inside a small, completely enclosed room. There were no doors or windows. Only a massive chest occupying the center of the room, while several everlasting torches illuminated the surroundings.
"This is where we throw everything." The elf pointed toward the enormous chest.
Severus slowly approached it. When he lifted the lid, he found nothing but an immense darkness.
"Interesting..." He smiled. "Let's go in."
Articuno prepared himself while Severus simply stepped into the chest's opening, falling the next moment. But Articuno beat his wings, gripping Severus's clothes with his talons, slowing his descent.
A few seconds later, Severus landed gently inside a vast chamber that he could almost describe as infinite.
Shelves, bookcases, cabinets, and mountains of objects stretched out in every direction. There were thousands of them. Severus couldn't hide the gleam in his eyes at the sight before him.
Articuno landed beside him. Nix appeared shortly afterward through her teleportation.
"So... this is a storage room?" Severus asked.
The elf shook her head. "I'm not really sure. But they say Master can remodel this room however he wishes. It's a special room created by one of the founders for the students."
Severus turned his eyes toward the countless objects scattered throughout the chamber. There were old broomsticks, furniture, clothes, books, weapons, instruments, magical artifacts, and countless items he had never seen before.
Without wasting any time, he began picking up one object after another, examining each one with great curiosity.
He concluded that they were ancient items—in other words, priceless treasures.
"Tell me... if I take some things from here for myself, would there be any problem?" Severus asked. After all, if those objects had been there for centuries, it was unlikely anyone still missed them.
"I don't think there would be any problem, Master. No one has ever said we couldn't take these objects," the elf replied.
Severus immediately picked up a handwritten book from the thirteenth century. He carefully opened its pages. The handwriting was completely different from the one used in that era. His smile widened.
'I can feel your excitement,' Articuno murmured.
'And how could I not be? This is incredible. There is ancient information here, and certainly useful information...' Severus replied without taking his eyes off the book.
A short while later, his eyes fell upon an old broken cabinet. He immediately sensed a strange spatial distortion coming from inside it.
Curious, he reached out and touched the wood. "This is connected to somewhere... but it's broken," Severus murmured as he felt the magic, having studied the Floo fireplaces a little during the holidays.
He immediately used his magic. Several crystalline runes, invisible to the naked eye, began appearing around the cabinet, glowing slowly.
Severus spent several minutes observing each symbol. He would need to fully understand that enchantment before attempting to restore it.
Without hesitation, he made a mental note that the cabinet was something he would investigate in the future.
After that, he picked up one of the old broomsticks scattered around the room and stored it inside his ring. After a quick inspection, he realized it still worked. It was a very old model, but that didn't bother him.
He had no intention of borrowing a broom from the school. Besides, he already had a good understanding of flying. At the dragon reserve where he had worked, there were broomsticks for everyone, and he had flown countless times. Since he worked with dragons, it was common to need to move quickly from one place to another or to retrieve one of them from the skies.
Flying had always been an enjoyable experience. Even so, Severus still found riding a dragon through the sky far more thrilling, but a broomstick would be enough for him to have some fun at Hogwarts, even if it wasn't one of the most modern models.
Severus continued examining object after object. He completely forgot his original goal of finding a quiet place to study some of his books.
Two hours passed almost without him noticing. During that time, Nix explained everything she knew about that room.
Curious, Severus decided to test how it worked. He focused his magic while imagining a study environment. At that very instant, the entire room began to transform.
The walls shifted into new positions. Shelves emerged, tables appeared, and a spacious laboratory took shape before him. There were Potion workbenches, an enchanting workshop, training dummies, bookshelves, and practically everything he could need to carry out his experiments.
Severus smiled in satisfaction. It was nice, even so... "It's still a mess," he muttered to himself.
Perhaps he needed to learn how to control that room better before shaping it exactly the way he wanted. In any case, there was nothing more he could do there at that moment.
He headed toward the door to leave the room. Before that, he had already asked Articuno to remain by Heloísa's side, knowing he would spend quite a while exploring that chamber.
At the very least, on the first day of classes, he had already found a place to work. He had also discovered that the room was located near the seventh floor, in one of the towers close to Gryffindor.
That was a bit inconvenient. Perhaps he would have to learn some method of teleportation within Hogwarts, or continue relying on Articuno, because constantly climbing all those stairs from the dungeons would become tedious, even for someone with his physical conditioning.
Severus then headed toward the Great Hall. Most of the tables were already occupied by the time he entered.
His presence was noticed immediately. The professors had clearly already spoken among themselves about the day's events.
Everyone turned their eyes toward him. After all, on that very first day, he had already attended four of the main subject classes alongside the other three Houses.
Naturally, the rumors were still spreading throughout the castle. Many students watched him. The boys looked suspicious. The girls, on the other hand, had an unmistakable gleam in their eyes as they discreetly followed him with their gazes.
Severus ignored all those looks and soon found Heloísa sitting at the Slytherin table. She was eating in silence. Across from her, a first-year student laughed at her while saying something unpleasant.
"Is there a problem?" Severus approached, sitting beside Heloísa while looking at the boy.
The child immediately fell silent when he met Severus's dark gaze. It didn't matter how noble his family might be. He was still only eleven years old, and at that moment, he was facing a man who had once commanded thousands of people.
Even if he wanted to say something about Severus being a half-blood, the words simply died in his throat, and the boy's eyes revealed nothing but fear.
He merely swallowed hard and turned his attention back to the plate in front of him. Severus then gently ran a hand through Heloísa's hair.
"I hope they haven't been bothering you."
The girl shrank back slightly. That reaction alone answered the question he hadn't even needed to ask Articuno.
"I'm fine..." she murmured.
Severus merely sighed. He still thought that putting her in Slytherin had been a terrible decision on her part.
But it was already too late, and his eyes then swept across the Slytherin table. Students from first through seventh year were seated throughout it, and most of them had turned their full attention toward him.
They watched him with obvious curiosity. Even so, few of them could maintain eye contact for very long.
Those students had certainly heard countless stories throughout the rest of the day.
The sixth- and seventh-year students were seated near the middle of the table. Mulciber and Avery had probably told everyone everything that had happened in each of the day's classes.
Severus was no longer the topic of conversation simply because of his personality or appearance. His magic, his changes, and everything he had accomplished over the summer had become the main subject of discussion among the Slytherin students.
The magical control that had impressed Flitwick.
Professor Slughorn's outburst.
Professor McGonagall's curiosity about his Animagus form.
And Professor Sprout's astonishment at the greenhouse plants.
It was just a shame that none of them had any idea what he was truly capable of. What he had demonstrated so far had been quite basic.
