HP – Jon Arctic as Severus Snape!
Chương 51: Chapter 50 - Go Fuck Yourself, Headmaster.
[Chapter Size: 3500 Words.]
Third Person POV
Hogwarts.
...
...
Upon arriving at the hospital wing, Professor Slughorn entered first, with Severus Snape and Regulus Black following behind. Regulus had accompanied them the entire way and needed to be present, since he was the one who had reported everything he had seen and helped carry the Marauders' bodies.
Throughout the entire walk, Regulus never stopped watching Severus, curious. Severus merely shrugged and continued following Slughorn.
As they entered the room, Severus found all four beds occupied. The Marauders were already awake. Some of them held ice packs against different parts of their faces, while most of their injuries had already been treated by Madam Pomfrey.
"Him!" James shouted, getting up from the bed the moment he saw Severus walk in. The hatred and humiliation from earlier had driven his hatred for Snape to an entirely new level that night.
At that very moment, Severus noticed who else was present.
Headmaster Dumbledore himself.
Professor McGonagall.
Frank Longbottom, the seventh-year Head Boy, and Lily Evans. Remus Lupin was a prefect and was also there, though as one of the victims.
From Slytherin, only Regulus Black and a boy from the Nott family, the seventh-year prefect.
"Lie back down at once, Mr. Potter," Madam Pomfrey ordered immediately, using her wand to force him back onto the bed.
"He hurt me and my friends!" Potter shouted, while Sirius growled in fury beside him, agreeing with his friend.
All four of their eyes were still badly swollen. The ointment Pomfrey had applied clearly did not work instantly. Severus could see the bruises around each of their eyes. Sirius's nose was also still completely crooked, far from any natural angle.
"Please, I ask that everyone calm down... Let's first understand what really happened," Dumbledore said as Severus joined the group.
Severus completely ignored Lily's intense stare, McGonagall's disappointed expression, Longbottom's curious and suspicious gaze, and Dumbledore's sharp eyes. Regulus still wore that same absent look as he watched Severus, while Nott seemed more cautious around him. He would certainly have to report what had happened there to his friends, Lestrange and the others.
"All right. Go ahead and tell everyone how I beat the four of you. There's no need to be embarrassed," Severus said with absolute calm.
Peter immediately began trembling. Lupin swallowed hard. Potter and Sirius, on the other hand, shook with rage upon hearing those words.
"Mr. Snape, how can you say such things after leaving four students bleeding in the corridor?" Professor McGonagall asked, her tone as stern as the seriousness of the situation.
"Well... four Gryffindor students came to ambush me. So do you think I should have simply let them cast spells on me? I know very well who would be lying in these beds if I hadn't fought back, Professor McGonagall." Severus looked directly at her.
She was somewhat surprised by the firmness of his gaze. The question lingered in the air.
Meanwhile, Dumbledore's gaze grew even more intense. Severus could feel that he was almost trying to use Legilimency, but it would be useless. After all, he had already tried that the previous day.
"What happened? We'd like to hear your version as well," he said at last.
Severus turned his eyes toward Dumbledore, then looked at the Marauders with absolute contempt. "I imagine you've lied quite a bit. Then again... you've always been very good at that."
Severus made a slight expression of disgust, showing just how repulsive he found those guys now.
"Shut up, Snape!" Black growled.
Severus merely let out a quiet chuckle. "Being a stray dog wasn't enough? You also had to become a liar, not to mention something else..." He looked back at Sirius but gave him no time to respond. He soon shifted his gaze to the Headmaster and the others, keeping his voice calm.
As everyone could already see, this Severus was very different from the old one. By this point, the old Severus Snape would have been foaming with rage. Besides not being very sociable, he also lacked the emotional stability to tell a story properly.
But now it was different. "Professor... to begin with, let me ask a question." Severus turned directly to Professor McGonagall. "After dinner, where is every student supposed to go?"
She answered without hesitation. "To their dormitories, obviously." Her response finally made her understand what Severus was getting at.
"Then tell me... why did four students from your House show up in the dungeons near the entrance to Slytherin, precisely in one of the corridors I was using to return to my common room?" He paused briefly.
"Because, as far as I know, I wasn't doing anything wrong. I was simply returning to my common room. But unlike me, your students were exactly where they weren't supposed to be. Don't you agree?"
As Severus spoke, he could feel Lily shiver slightly. She certainly recognized that pattern of harassment from Potter and the others, even though they were no longer friends.
McGonagall turned to look at the four students, who immediately turned pale. It seemed they had not thought about that detail.
Her gaze passed over Potter before settling on Lupin. "Mr. Lupin... tell me exactly why you, as a prefect, were with three other students in the Slytherin dungeons." McGonagall's eyes narrowed.
What Severus was saying made perfect sense, and Lupin swallowed hard.
"We... were helping with patrol duty. We heard from some students that someone was causing trouble in Slytherin. We went there to help. But then Severus showed up and started attacking us," Potter answered immediately in a loud voice.
"And now you play the role of prefects?" Severus mocked, earning a look full of hostility from Potter.
His gaze then shifted to Dumbledore. There was a silent question in his eyes. "You certainly saw 'everything.' So why all this charade?"
Dumbledore was a Legilimens. Severus was certain he had already examined the memories of those four boys.
And Severus was not foolish enough to believe that any one of those four boys was capable of hiding their mind from someone like Dumbledore.
"Mr. Snape, speak only when you are asked to," McGonagall reprimanded him for addressing the Headmaster that way.
"But he's right." She immediately crossed her arms, still staring at Lupin.
"We... we didn't do anything..." Peter said with a trembling voice.
Upon hearing that, Severus burst into laughter. "What's wrong, rat? Are you really going to lie like that in front of everyone?"
Severus spared no insults, not even in front of the Headmaster and the two Heads of House.
"Mr. Snape, I ask that you do not insult your classmates. Ten points from Slytherin!" McGonagall reprimanded him once again.
Severus merely shrugged. Meanwhile, Peter hunched his shoulders, clearly intimidated.
A brief silent understanding passed between the Marauders at that moment.
Perhaps they were beginning to realize that Severus called Sirius "stray dog" and Peter "rat" for a reason.
And it definitely was not the first time.
"Well... I'm only calling each of them what they are, Professor. Besides, they enjoy insulting me too. I don't see why I shouldn't return the favor." Severus crossed his arms.
"Anyway, let me tell the whole story." He began before anyone could say anything else, even talking over Professor McGonagall. "As I was returning to the Slytherin common room, those four... the Rat, the Stray Dog, the Beast, and the Stag, appeared in the middle of the corridor." 1
Severus paid no attention to the horrified looks from the Marauders, the professors, or especially the Headmaster.
Even the prefects were staring at him in complete astonishment.
Even so, he continued. "They started insulting me. I warned them that if they kept blocking my way, I would fight back. Then I simply walked past them."
"That's when Potter, being the coward he is, tried to cast a spell at my back. I managed to block it in time and punched him in the eye. After that, I started beating each of them with my own fists. While they were casting spells at me, I was simply trying to dodge every single one." Severus continued speaking with his arms crossed.
"Tell me... was I wrong to fight back? While all of them had their wands pointed at me, all I had were my fists." He looked at each person present, daring anyone to contradict him.
"You fought all of them with your bare hands, Mr. Snape?" Slughorn asked, horrified.
"I didn't have time, Professor. As I said, Gryffindor's hero thought it was honorable to attack me from behind. I didn't have time to draw my wand while I was being surrounded by four students pointing their wands at me. So I used what I had. My fists." Severus replied calmly.
The professors exchanged glances.
"That's a lie! He's lying!" Potter shouted.
However, the circumstances and all the facts presented seemed to support Severus's version far more than the story told by the Marauders.
"May I see your wand, Mr. Snape?" Dumbledore asked.
Severus simply handed it over. He knew the Headmaster would certainly notice the runes he had carved into the wood to prevent monitoring by the Ministry. Fortunately, he had not yet engraved the runes that concealed the spells cast by the wand.
Dumbledore examined the wand carefully. His gaze soon stopped on the small runes carved into the wood, something that should not have been on a wand.
The symbols, completely unfamiliar to him, held his attention for several seconds. Then he returned the wand to Severus. There were clearly many thoughts running through his mind, but he made no comment about the runes.
"It only records a few cleaning spells and some rather sophisticated Transfiguration after the incident... as well as a few simple spells cast before that," Dumbledore declared. It was completely different from the wands of Black, Potter, and Lupin, which recorded numerous offensive and restraining spells.
That seemed to be a devastating blow against the Marauders. The four exchanged glances, realizing that their chances of convincing the professors had diminished drastically.
Severus merely looked at them with disgust. A bunch of spoiled boys. They lied, attacked, and intimidated others whenever it suited them.
It was simply disgusting.
"If this is really true, then I am deeply disappointed in you boys." Professor McGonagall could not hide her irritation.
"First, you went down to the dungeons after dinner, when you should have been returning to Gryffindor Tower. Then you ambushed a Slytherin student. Really... this rivalry between Houses is no justification for doing something like that. Then you cast a spell at him while the boy had nothing but his own arms to defend himself with?"
"I truly disapprove of violence, but I also cannot condemn a student who had to resort to it to defend himself while four others had their wands pointed at him." Her voice grew even sterner.
"And finally, you still lie, claiming that he attacked you without reason. Honestly... I expected better from you. We may be many things, but we are not cowards."
Those words made all four lower their heads, and Severus was surprised by McGonagall's speech. He was genuinely surprised. It was the first time he had seen someone tear the Marauders apart like that.
Even the other prefects exchanged glances, each wearing their own expressions as they looked at the professor and the Marauders.
McGonagall cast an even more disappointed look at Lupin, who did not even have the courage to meet her eyes.
"Calm yourself, Minerva," Dumbledore said in a conciliatory tone, trying to ease the situation.
Severus raised an eyebrow as the Headmaster continued. "I believe this was merely a dispute between Houses... a bit more excessive than usual, perhaps, but nothing too far outside what we've seen before."
"Headmaster, you cannot possibly be serious." McGonagall turned toward him with an angry glare. "Lupin is a prefect." She truly could not believe Dumbledore was going to let this pass so easily.
"I think that a few points deducted and detentions for all five students will be sufficient."
Severus arched an eyebrow.
"Wait... are you saying that I'll also be punished for defending myself?" He had already expected something like this. Even so, he did not like hearing it one bit, and the very atmosphere almost changed, but he held back his magic this time. Even so, he was furious the moment he heard those words.
"I'm sorry, Mr. Snape, but you used excessive violence. Pettigrew didn't even cast a spell, and yet you beat him just like the others."
"Obviously..." Severus replied immediately. "Because he never got the chance. If he had, he would have attacked me from behind just like his cowardly friends did."
"Don't call me a coward, you filthy greasy git!" Potter shouted.
"Potter!" McGonagall reprimanded him with a furious glare, while Slughorn tried to calm the situation.
"Just look at this guy." Severus mocked, once again drawing everyone's attention. "Four students ambushing a half-blood." Then he looked directly at Potter. "You're nothing but a coward, Potter. You only think you're a hero because you try to turn everyone else into villains."
"But in the end, we all know what you really are. A coward." An honorable person would never attack someone from behind. But Potter is nothing more than ego and the delusion inside his sick mind that he's a hero.
"You can keep shouting like you always do, but anyone who isn't a coward would never need to attack a lone Slytherin student four against one. Why don't you try doing that to Lestrange? Or to any other pure-blood? You don't, and you know why? Because, I'll say it again... you're nothing but a coward."
"Mr. Snape, I ask that you not speak to your classmate that way," Dumbledore intervened.
The situation was beginning to spiral completely out of control, and Severus had absolutely no fear of mocking a Potter who was practically foaming at the mouth on that hospital bed, to the point of worrying Pomfrey beside him, as Potter looked ready to have a fit from hearing Severus ridicule him.
Severus simply turned his eyes back to the Headmaster. "Headmaster... I have just one more thing to say." Severus was already thoroughly irritated.
There were many things he had been holding back ever since inheriting the memories of the former Severus. As he looked Dumbledore straight in the eye while taking a few steps closer, even with the prefects and Professor McGonagall surrounding the Headmaster, Severus raised both hands and extended only his middle fingers.
The entire hospital wing was horrified. "I've wanted to say this for a long time, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore... go fuck yourself." Severus kept both middle fingers raised toward the Headmaster. 9
The entire room fell into absolute silence. Even the Marauders could not believe what they were seeing.
Slughorn actually took a few steps backward and choked in shock, completely dumbfounded.
"Mr. Snape! What do you think you're doing?!" McGonagall practically shouted in horror.
Severus was already sick and tired of that Headmaster. So he simply turned his back on everyone. "If you want to expel me, be my guest, Headmaster."
Severus was not truly worried about the possibility of being expelled from Hogwarts. Of course, he would lose all the plans he had made since returning to the castle.
But it wasn't as if he couldn't simply study at another school of magic.
Even carrying the stain of an expulsion from Hogwarts, his magic would be welcomed anywhere in the world.
No one would refuse him. Not when he was capable of doing things that no other wizard in that world could.
"Mr. Snape! Come back here! One hundred points from Slytherin!" the Transfiguration professor called after him.
Severus, however, simply began walking out of the hospital wing, leaving everyone inside speechless.
McGonagall still tried to stop him, and he did not care.
Nor did he bother being polite or asking for permission. He simply walked out of the hospital wing.
Mentally, he called for Articuno. The bird left Heloise's room and quickly landed on his shoulder.
The next instant, both of them disappeared through Apparition. Articuno was not limited by the same anti-Apparition protections that surrounded Hogwarts.
Severus did not go to his own room. He Apparated directly to the shores of the Black Lake after mentally asking Articuno to help him.
His eyes turned toward Hogwarts, reflected upon the dark waters of the lake as he remained a good distance from the castle.
He simply sighed. "If this is the kind of treatment I'm going to receive at this school... I'd rather leave."
Articuno watched him with concern. Not because Severus was out of control.
But because he was deeply disappointed.
The school had reached the point where students could freely attack others because of the Headmaster's negligence. And in the end, he still punished everyone equally.
That only encouraged the aggressors to continue. Severus had clearly seen the triumphant look in Sirius's and James's eyes when they found out that he would also be punished, when the Headmaster included him as well.
I mean... whenever he was brought to the hospital wing injured... whenever he reported assaults but could not prove anything... the professors simply ignored him or treated him as though he were some paranoid boy.
But the moment he fought back... suddenly, he became part of the problem as well.
Any fool should have known that Severus was not foolish enough to simply want to face four people alone, openly provoke them, or attack them without reason.
He only attacked when he needed to defend himself somehow. When everyone was against him.
Even Lily defended Potter and his friends more than she defended him whenever Severus voiced his concerns. That was why, in a way, he no longer liked that girl, even though he could now be someone the current Lily might have wanted to be with, so different from the former Severus. She had never understood him, never tried to understand him, and instead let the prejudices of her House, along with the opinions of her friends and family about Severus, always convince her that he was the one in the wrong...
She might have seen Snape call her a "Mudblood," but the two of them had drifted apart long before that. Lily had gradually begun placing more and more importance on all the prejudice Gryffindor held against Slytherin, as well as Severus's research into the Dark Arts, without ever trying to understand him.
Severus truly had turned his attention toward studying the Dark Arts again. But what else could he have done? He needed to find some way to defend himself. 1
He created dark spells. Of course he did. But who wouldn't try to create a way to survive after nearly being killed by a werewolf? A trap set by Black.
In the end, he was still the one who ended up being punished for it. Black, who had lured him toward his death, received only two weeks of punishment.
Wasn't that unfair?
The student who had encouraged him to die received nothing more than a minor punishment. Meanwhile, Severus was placed under a perpetual vow, lived under the constant threat of expulsion, was sentenced to an entire month of detention, and even had to watch James earn fifty points for Gryffindor for "saving" him.
On top of that, Potter also gained a "life debt" from Severus and the status of a hero. Even Lily had thrown that in his face back then.
And Severus could not even respond because of the perpetual vow.
But Severus no longer cared about Lily or the others. That school was a dump.
In a way, it was hardly surprising that the last revolutionary to come out of that place had become a Dark Lord. After all, Severus had spent all those years hearing that Voldemort had also been a Slytherin student, just like many of his followers. His classmates often said that their parents had studied alongside Voldemort.
"So, if I get expelled for telling the Headmaster to go fuck himself... so be it." He would leave that place without a single regret. 1
"Let's go somewhere else, Articuno," Severus said calmly, tired of looking at the lake.
He certainly did not want to leave Hogwarts without first visiting one last place.
"Where to?" Articuno asked.
"The Forbidden Forest."
Articuno immediately transformed into a white light, enveloping them both. The two disappeared from the lakeshore and reappeared amid the darkness of the forest.
Severus opened the palm of his hand, and a small flame appeared above it. The flame floated upward until it settled on his shoulder, remaining suspended there as it illuminated the path ahead.
Then Severus and the small bird on his shoulder began walking through the darkness of the Forbidden Forest.
