I Am the Dark God's Fragment: My System Turns Destruction Into Power
Chapter 26: The Shattered Crucible
"I’ll destroy every last one of you..."
Liora snapped her eyes open, stepping straight into the oncoming storm.
A fiery crimson aura burst outward, bathing the rocky summit in a harsh blood-red light. Pushing her heels off the cracked stone, she blurred into motion, turning into a streaking red flash. Her energy sword whistled as it whipped through the air in sweeping, elegant spirals.
SWISH! SWISH! SWISH!
The foremost line of Aberrants didn’t even have time to react. Necks cleanly severed, limbs diced into grotesque chunks, their heavy carcasses collapsed onto the dirt like felled trees. Liora moved like a tempest, dodging a razor claw by hair-thin margins before pivoting to drive her lengthened blade through three beast torsos at once.
She expanded the length of her crimson sword, turning the weapon into a brilliant, sweeping whip of lethal mana. Entire ranks of two-meter-tall abominations were cleaved in two, purple gore spraying across the shattered cliffside.
Yet, for every ten monsters she cut down, twenty more surged out of the glowing violet circles. The horde seemed infinite.
As the frantic battle dragged on, a heavy numbness began spreading from her core to her limbs. Her movements, once blindingly fluid, grew fractionally slower.
Across the field, Vora stood with her arm raised, her palm tilted directly toward Liora. The ambient space twisted slightly as the pocket realm continuously leeched the crimson mana pouring from Liora’s body, feeding off her reserves to sustain its physical boundaries.
’My mana is draining too fast...’ Liora gritted her teeth, ducking beneath a heavy double-claw swipe that shattered the boulder behind her. ’If this keeps up, Vora will siphon every drop before I can even strike.’
She couldn’t afford a battle of attrition. She needed to purge the field in a single, decisive blow—no matter the cost.
Parrying a massive horn, Liora swung her sword in a wide horizontal arc to clear a temporary radius. Three monsters tumbled backward, giving her barely five paces of breathing room.
That brief window was all she needed.
Liora planted her feet, dismissing her energy blade as she closed her eyes. She raised her right palm toward the stormy sky. Her long silver hair whipped violently around her face, tossed by the sudden vortex of wind brewing around her body. Ignore the beast claws scraping closer, ignore the looming threats—she poured every remaining drop of her mana directly into her open hand.
A spark of red light flickered in her palm, expanding into a dense, crackling orb of crimson energy. The sphere spun frantically, gathering atmospheric density until it roared like a compressed gale, forcing the air beneath her boots to crater outward.
Vora’s eyes narrowed, her graceful composure cracking for a fraction of a second. "What...?"
The wave of Aberrants closed the gap, their dripping jaws barely ten meters away from her face.
Liora opened her eyes, her emerald irises gleaming with cold, unwavering resolve. She thrust her glowing palm forward, driving the compressed sun of red energy straight into the center of the approaching horde.
"Crimson Burst!"
BOOOOOOM—!
A blinding flash swallowed the hilltop as a catastrophic blast ripped through the clearing. The mountain shook violently, its foundations groaning beneath the raw kinetic shockwave. A surging wall of incineration swept across the plateau, vaporizing scores of Aberrants into ash in an instant. Rocks fractured, dirt disintegrated, and thick clouds of burning smoke billowed into the air, blotting out the sky.
When the deafening roar finally subsided, Liora collapsed onto her knees.
Thick dust swept into her lungs, causing her to cough violently as her frail frame shuddered against the gravel.
"Ha... ha..."
Her vision swam, blurring around the edges. Her skin had turned deathly pale. Pouring the entirety of her remaining reserves into that single spell was a gamble, but leaving her mana exposed to Vora’s passive siphoning would have guaranteed her defeat anyway. At least this way, she controlled the outcome.
Her chest felt as though it were clamped in an iron vise. A burning, agonizing sensation coursed through her primary mana veins—the agonizing signature of severe Mana Burn, like liquid fire crawling beneath her skin.
As the thick smoke began to clear, a deep crater was revealed cut into the mountain peak, its floor covered in a layer of fine grey ash.
Liora’s eyelids flickered, her gaze straining through the haze.
In the center of the destruction, Vora remained standing. Surrounding her was a translucent, dark-purple barrier, though its surface was now covered in spiderweb fractures like shattered glass.
CRACK!
The purple dome broke apart, dissolving into a shower of glimmering violet sparks that rained down around Vora’s feet.
"She... blocked it..." Liora rasped out, her throat feeling raw and dry as sand.
Vora’s expression had lost all its playful arrogance, replaced by a cold, deadly seriousness. Her violet eyes locked onto the kneeling girl thirty meters away.
"I have to admit, Liora... I didn’t think you had enough strength left to pull off something like that," Vora said quietly, her black heels clicking steadily against the scorched stone as she walked forward.
Liora gasped for air, her heartbeat pounding irregularly inside her ear canals. Every nerve ending screamed in agony as the Mana Burn consumed her interior channels. She winced, her entire body trembling under the crushing physical strain.
’So this is what it feels like...’ she thought bitterly, her face contorting as she swallowed back the metallic taste rising in her throat. ’It feels like my internal organs are being torn apart from the inside...’
"It seems you’ve outlived your usefulness," Vora continued, her shadow casting over Liora as the distance between them closed.
Each rhythmic click of Vora’s heels sounded like the ticking clock of an approaching executioner.
"You know what happens to tools that no longer serve a purpose, don’t you?" Vora stopped directly in front of the kneeling girl, her voice dropping into a chilling whisper. "That’s right... I discard them."
Liora’s head hung low, her eyes staring blankly at the dark leather of Vora’s boots resting on the dirt.
’Is this really where it ends?’ Her vision blurred with unshed tears.
Vora extended her right hand, her fingers spreading above Liora’s silver head like a butcher preparing a carcass.
"Any last words, battery?" Vora asked, her voice dripping with cold disgust.
Liora remained motionless, her body entirely unresponsive. No matter how hard she tried to force her muscles to contract, her depleted physical frame refused to obey. A thin trickle of dark crimson blood leaked from her nose, dripping onto the dry soil below.
’I’m sorry... I’m so sorry, everyone...’ Her tears finally spilled over, splashing against the dirt. ’I hope... you all find a way out...’
She knew her sacrifice wouldn’t be in vain. The moment her heart stopped, the delicate energetic balance sustaining this realm would shatter. Without her massive mana pool anchoring the perimeter, the pocket dimension would experience a severe collapse, forcing Vora to draw heavily on her own core to prevent total disintegration. In that chaos, a rift would inevitably tear open—granting everyone a chance to escape.
Flashes of Ren, Ryu, Miku, Reika, and Princess Evelyn passed through her fading consciousness. She had misled them, intentionally sending them back down the trail toward the camp under the guise of finding her. But her true motive had been simple: to guide them toward the refugees who viewed her as family, hoping those capable warriors would protect the survivors when the realm inevitably fractured.
Her own future had ended the moment Vora bound her to this dimension. But for those teenagers... they still had lives waiting for them outside.
"Forgive me..." Liora whispered into the wind, completely resigned to her fate.
A dark purple aura flared around Vora’s palm as she prepared to crush Liora’s skull.
"Stop right there, you filthy bitch!"
A chorus of furious roars echoed from the edge of the hill.
Vora paused, her hand hovering in mid-air. She turned her head slightly, peering over her shoulder.
A massive mob of villagers was surging up the steep incline. Men, women, and teenagers rushed onto the plateau, their faces twisted with unfiltered rage. They wielded burning torches, jagged wooden stakes, and heavy branches, their jaws set tight as they advanced without a shred of fear.
"Don’t you dare lay a finger on Liora, you monster!" the villagers screamed in unison, their collective voices cursing Vora.
Liora forced her head up, her pupils dilating in sheer terror as she took in the sight of the crowd charging into the danger zone. "You... why are you here...?"
Cold sweat beaded on her pale forehead. This was her worst nightmare. She had taken every risk to keep them safe, yet here they were, walking straight into the slaughterhouse.
The purple energy surrounding Vora’s hand faded. She turned around completely, her violet eyes locking onto the angry mob with a look of supreme irritation.
"Hmm... do all of you really possess a collective death wish?" Vora asked softly, her voice devoid of any warmth.
"Run... get out of here...!" Liora tried to scream, but her exhausted voice broke into a raspy, painful cough, her throat feeling as if she were swallowing shards of glass.
