I Am the Dark God's Fragment: My System Turns Destruction Into Power
Chapter 44: The Shadow of Prophecy
His fingers dug into the edge of the wooden desk as he stared at his own face rendered on ancient canvas.
’This painting... it knew I was coming.’
"Ren? What’s wrong?" Elysia asked, picking up on the sudden shift in his posture. "Do you recognize something in this artwork?"
Ren took two deliberate steps back from the desk, his frame locked tight. "Elysia... do you have any idea what this drawing is supposed to mean?"
Elysia stepped closer to the table, her eyes scanning the faded ink strokes across the three panels.
"I can’t translate the finer details," she said, her voice remaining low. "But the structure is obvious. This is a prophetic rendering."
"A prophetic rendering?" Ren asked.
The canvas was divided into three explicit sections—left, center, and right. Following standard historical recording methods, the arrangement carried a specific chronological order: the left panel represented the past, the center depicted the present or immediate pivotal moments, and the right displayed the ultimate trajectory of the future.
What set his heart racing wasn’t fear, but the sharp anomaly staring back at him from the left panel. That illustration wasn’t a mythic history of Lumiris; it was an exact depiction of his past life as Elian on Earth, reaching into the stone chest to grasp the purple crystal inside the desert pyramid.
If his arrival in this world had been drawn on a scroll centuries before his birth, it shattered his assumptions. His transmigration wasn’t a random anomaly or an accident of the universe—it was a pre-arranged sequence.
Yet the logic refused to align cleanly. How could ancient scholars on a magic-laden world like Lumiris foresee events taking place in a non-magical, modern dimension like Earth? How did the purple crystal inside the pyramid link directly to the ancestral gems currently sitting inside the royal vault of Starlight Kingdom? The bridge between the two realms carried too many blank spaces.
Ren shifted his gaze to the center panel.
The middle illustration was split directly down the center into two conflicting outcomes. On the left side of the split, a young man bearing Ren’s exact build stood amidst shattered rubble and piles of lifeless bodies, his shadow stretching long over the carnage. On the right side, that same young man stood elevated on a stone platform, surrounded by crowds of people raising their hands in celebration.
If the canvas was tracking his life... it was laying out two mutually exclusive paths.
Finally, his eyes dropped to the right panel—the image of a shattered planet exploding into jagged fragments against the black void of space.
Yet, looking closely at the right edge, the ink trailed off into faint, unfinished strokes, leaving a section of the brown canvas entirely blank. The final outcome wasn’t locked; the future remained unwritten, leaving an open variable in the equation.
"Are you certain this is a prophecy?" Ren asked, keeping his tone flat.
Elysia nodded without hesitation. "Yes. The canvas texture, the specific ink blend, and the triple-panel layout are the distinct marks of the Seers."
She paused, her eyes narrowing as she examined the edges of the scroll. "Though it’s strange to find one here. True Seers are exceptionally rare within Starlight Kingdom, and those who do exist are kept strictly isolated."
Ren crossed his arms, leaning back slightly. "Why isolate them?"
"Because our government does not permit prophecies to circulate among the general population," Elysia explained, pacing slowly alongside the desk. "Decades ago, uncontrolled predictions caused widespread panic across the inner districts. When people believe a catastrophic end is inevitable, order collapses and morale rots from the inside out. To prevent that, my sister Evelyn enacted a royal directive—all verified Seers were rounded up and relocated to the Eastern realm, to the Kingdom of Aethelgard."
’Aethelgard...’ Ren stored the name away.
Starlight Kingdom was built explicitly for war, housing the core military infrastructure and elite units designated to hold the frontlines against the Aberrant surges. That explained why he had originally awakened alongside a royal expeditionary squad when he first arrived in this world—a squad that had been entirely wiped out, leaving him as the sole survivor preserved by the system’s emergency intervention.
Each of the five human realms had evidently developed its own specialized role to keep humanity from collapsing.
"So your house ignores these predictions entirely?" Ren asked.
Elysia shook her head firmly. "We don’t ignore them out of arrogance, Ren. But dwelling on a horrific future guarantees you won’t survive the present. Knowing how the world might end doesn’t help you kill the monster standing in front of you today."
Ren let out a short, quiet breath. Under normal circumstances, he would have brushed off prophecy as ancient superstition. But he couldn’t ignore the fact that the left panel had accurately rendered a moment from his former life on a completely different planet.
"What if the artwork isn’t exaggerating?" Ren asked, his voice dropping an octave.
The temperature in the underground cellar seemed to drop with his words.
Elysia kept her eyes fixed on his face, her posture straight. "If the rendering is accurate..." She pointed a slender finger at the split middle panel. "...then your presence leads to one of two paths."
She then slid her finger to the right panel, hovering over the fragmented planet. "And the end result shows total destruction. But look at the unfinished edge. The ink stops before the frame is sealed. The outcome hasn’t been locked into place yet."
Ren nodded slowly. The blank space confirmed his own assessment. The future wasn’t a fixed track; it was a shifting set of variables. If he wanted precise answers regarding his transmigration and the entity resting inside his soul core, he would eventually have to seek out the Seers in Aethelgard.
But right now, long-term mysteries took a backseat to immediate survival. He needed a fortress, resources, and level progression before he could even consider traveling across continents.
"All right," Ren said, reaching out to roll the canvas back into a tight cylinder before setting it back inside the brown chest. "We’ve seen enough down here for now."
He turned toward the iron door. "I have a settlement to build."
Elysia didn’t move immediately. Her eyes lingered on the chest, her brow pulled low, before she turned and followed him up the stone steps.
They pushed through the iron threshold, ascending into the bright afternoon sun. Ren stepped off the broken timber of the cellar foundation, landing firmly on the grass of the ruined clearing.
He threw his arms out, taking a deep, clean breath of the open air. The damp, heavy chill of the underground vault faded from his lungs, replaced by the warm scent of pine and soil.
"Much better," Ren muttered, rolling his shoulders to work out the tension. "That basement was suffocating."
Elysia stepped up beside him, her gaze sweeping over the vast expanse of destroyed homes and scattered stone.
Ren walked toward the center of the clearing, evaluating the spatial dimensions of the plot. To hold off stray Aberrants and low-tier roaming beasts, he needed a structural boundary equivalent to the outer defense perimeter of Starlight Kingdom.
He glanced back over his shoulder at the massive, towering stone walls enclosing the capital behind them.
’Step one is establishing the perimeter wall,’ Ren decided, bringing up his internal system interface to review his remaining balance of 2,458 CM and 776 CP. ’Once the boundary is sealed, I can start dropping functional building blueprints inside.’
Behind him, Elysia stood frozen in place. Her color had drained slightly, her green eyes fixed onto the back of Ren’s neck with a sharp, quiet tension as the details of the middle panel echoed through her mind.
