"One!"

Ren shifted his weight to the balls of his feet, the dark-crimson aura around his arms flaring to a razor-thin edge.

"Begin!" Velista’s delighted laughter chimed out.

Without issuing a single word of warning, Ren’s frame coiled like a pressurized steel spring. Opposite him, the mysterious hooded figure dissolved into an imperceptible blur of absolute motion, rushing across the ruined arena floor like a hunting shadow.

The distance between them vanished in a fraction of a second. Beneath the hem of the man’s dark cloak, his golden-brown eyes ignited with a violent, feral light. He drew back his heavy right fist, and as his arm cut through the air, his biological tissue underwent an instantaneous, unnatural transformation. Metallic plates of dark, iron-like chitin surged over his skin, fusing into a brutal, spike-studded gauntlet that encased his forearm in heavy biological armor.

BOOM!

The iron-armored punch detonated through the space where Ren’s head had been a microsecond prior. Ren executed a low, frantic backward dash, feeling the intense pressure wave of the strike brush past his cheek. The hooded man’s fist slammed directly into the shattered cobblestones, detonating the stone floor with explosive violence. Deep, web-like fissures spider-webbed outward for twenty yards, showering the arena with heavy stone shrapnel as the entire coliseum trembled under the kinetic shockwave.

"Near miss..." Ren hissed through his teeth, his breath coming out short and fast as he checked his balance amidst the flying gravel.

His sharp eyes instantly locked onto the attacker’s posture. The hooded man’s armored right fist was temporarily lodged deep within the cracked bedrock, his heavy shoulder overextended from the force of his own strike.

An opening!

Ren didn’t hesitate. He swung his double-bladed Void Sickle in a clean, sweeping arc, aiming to sever the man’s exposed neck while his arm was pinned in the earth. The dark purple blade whistled through the air with lethal precision.

CLANG!

A blinding shower of orange sparks exploded between them.

Before the Void Sickle could bite into flesh, the hooded man raised his left forearm. Iron chitin surged over his skin in a fraction of a second, solidifying into a thick, reinforced buckler plate that caught the sharp blade directly. The sheer kinetic feedback ran up the hilt of Ren’s weapon like a bolt of lightning, violently tearing the Void Sickle from his grip.

The double-bladed scythe flew skyward, spinning out of control through the air before plunging blade-first into the stone floor twenty yards behind the attacker.

Ren’s hands were empty. His wrists throbbed with white-hot pain from the disarming blow.

Knowing he couldn’t survive a single exchange with this monster without a weapon, Ren turned on his heel and sprinted at full speed toward his grounded scythe. He threw his entire weight forward, extending his hand to snatch the hilt out of the rock.

SHOO!

A shadow fell over him before his fingers could even graze the dark metal.

The hooded man materialized directly in his path like a specter, cutting off his trajectory with frightening speed. Without giving Ren a single second to react, the attacker drove a heavy, iron-armored right hook straight into the side of Ren’s jaw.

BANG!

The brutal strike hit like a battering ram. Blood spattered across the dust as Ren’s head snapped violently sideways. The immense impact lifted his feet off the ground, sending him tumbling head over heels across the rough cobblestones. He crashed heavily into the dirt, sliding twenty feet through the rubble before grinding to a halt.

"Gah...!" Ren choked out, coughing up a mouthful of copper-tasting blood. His vision blurred dangerously as hot pain radiated through his skull.

The hooded man didn’t give him room to breathe. He closed the distance in a single, explosive stride, leaping high into the air to drive an armored boot straight down onto Ren’s chest to crush his heart.

Ren’s eyes snapped open. Seeing the shadow descending upon him, he rolled violently to his left.

BOOM!

The stone floor where he had been lying a split second before cratered inward, rock fragments spraying out like shrapnel.

Forced into an absolute corner without a weapon, Ren pulled himself up into a low, feral stance. The raw survival instinct buried deep within his soul flared to life. If he couldn’t use his scythe, he had to make his own flesh and blood into a weapon. He had to assume the arrogant, ruthless archetype of the Dark God Nyx to force his bloodline to keep pumping dark divinity through his veins.

Ren straightened his spine, wiping the dark blood from his mouth with the back of his hand, and let out a cold, condescending sneer.

"Is that all you’ve got, you mindless lapdog?" Ren taunted, his voice dripping with insufferable arrogance. "You mutated yourself into a beast just to swing iron fists like a common tavern brawler? Pathetic."

The psychological trigger clicked instantly.

A dense, turbulent aura of deep purple and dark crimson erupted from Ren’s body, swirling around his fists and boots like liquid flame. The agonizing ache in his jaw vanished, replaced by an intoxicating surge of raw, kinetic energy.

The hooded man charged forward, unleashing a rapid-fire barrage of iron-armored punches.

SWISH! SWISH! BANG!

In slow motion, the world around Ren seemed to decelerate. Every muscle contraction, every shift in his opponent’s center of gravity, and every trajectory of those iron-clad fists became starkly visible to his hyper-focused senses.

Ren moved with supernatural agility, ducking, weaving, and slipping past the oncoming iron gauntlets by micro-inches. His body dodged with a fluid, terrifying elegance—a seamless martial choreography he had never formally learned as Elian, yet his vessel’s divine bloodline executed it as naturally as breathing.

SLIP! STEP! PARRY!

Ren slipped inside the attacker’s inner guard, deflecting a heavy jab with the palm of his hand, and struck back.

He slammed a dark, aura-infused palm heel directly into the man’s sternum.

BOOM!

The kinetic impact shattered the iron chitin armor covering the man’s chest, sending black shards flying into the air. Before the attacker could recover, Ren executed a tight, brutal sequence of close-quarters striking arts—pummeling his stomach, ribcage, and solar plexus with relentless, lightning-fast punches infused with dark divinity.

BANG! BANG! BANG! BANG!

"Too slow!" Ren mocked, shifting his hips in slow-motion elegance to deliver a vicious, rising knee strike straight into the man’s chin.

The strike shattered the armored plates covering the man’s lower jaw, snapping his head backward. The hooded man stumbled, his balance completely ruined as his iron armor fractured under the continuous, crushing assault.

Ren didn’t let up for a single microsecond. He channeled every remaining drop of Nyx’s dark energy into his lower limbs, leaping into the air with a fluid, airborne rotation.

A massive wheel of deep purple energy spun around his leg as he executed an explosive, cinematic tornado kick mid-air.

CRACK!

In excruciating slow motion, Ren’s dark, aura-coated boot landed with pinpoint precision directly onto the side of the hooded man’s jaw.

The force of the impact was catastrophic. The thick bone of the man’s jaw fractured with a sickening crunch, blood and shattered iron teeth spraying out in a wide arc across the air. The kinetic force blasted the towering attacker across the coliseum, sending him skidding over fifty yards of stone floor before he slammed violently into the ancient stone perimeter wall.

The wall crumbled under his weight, burying the man in a heap of broken masonry.

Ren landed lightly on his boots, his dark coat settling around his shoulders as he let out a slow, controlled breath.

Silence fell over the arena, save for the soft clicking of Velista’s heels from the sidelines.

Velista threw her head back and burst into wild, ecstatic laughter, clapping her hands together in genuine delight. "Bravo! Absolutely breathtaking, Ren! I knew you had a killer instinct buried underneath that sweet, soft exterior!"

Ren turned his head slowly, casting a cold, unyielding look at Velista as he walked over to his grounded Void Sickle, pulling the dark double-bladed weapon smoothly from the dirt.

"I won the duel, Velista," Ren stated coldly, leveling the point of his scythe toward her. "Keep your word and let me walk."

Velista raised a slender eyebrow, a playful, wicked smirk curling across her pale lips.

"Won?" Velista purred softly, her eyes twinkling with cruel amusement. "Did I ever say the match was officially over, darling?"

Ren’s eyes narrowed into sharp slits. "What?"

"Look behind you," Velista whispered softly, pointing a pale finger toward the collapsed wall.

Ren’s heart dropped into his stomach.

THUD. THUD. THUD.

The pile of broken stone masonry exploded outward in a violent shower of dust. A low, agonizing scream of pure, biological agony echoed across the ruins as the mountain beneath their feet began to shake with terrifying intensity.

The dark grey smoke erupted from the buried figure once again. The biological mass of the hooded man began to expand at a grotesque, unnatural speed. Flesh tore, bones cracked and snapped as they lengthened, and massive iron plates erupted from his spine like jagged mountain ridges.

Within seconds, the human form dissolved entirely, replaced by the towering, nightmarish eighteen-meter frame of the Apex Aberrant.

The titan-class monster raised its colossal, four-eyed head toward the sky, unleashing an earth-shattering roar that shook the very foundation of the mountain.

Ren stood frozen in the dirt, staring up at the titanic beast as the shadow of absolute destruction swallowed him once more.

Velista’s cruel laughter echoed endlessly in his ears, leaving him trapped in the center of her sadistic playground.
