I Am Zeus
Chapter 422: The Hunger Gallery
The shelf camp was already behind them when dawn marked the place.
Nyxara and Vespera led the nine into a low range of broken arches where the ash weather thinned, and the air turned cooler. The tokens at Zeus’s belt stayed quiet. It did not make the passage tolerable. Ahead, the stone opened into a length gallery, cut through ended law, and lined with pillars that retained the outlines of ended gods and unformed beasts, some of which were statues, and others that bore only the semblance of these things until the group passed inside.
’Do not touch the faces,’ Nyxara told the others, ’do not answer a dead name if it calls.’
Vespera’s hook hung loose in her hand. ’And you do not fall behind. The gallery eats stragglers first.’
They discovered the truth of that warning fifty paces inside.
A pillar on the left split down its length, and a multi-shouldered beast bled from the breach. An ended god-form peeled free of the right wall, crowned with broken verdicts and without eyes, while the gallery swelled with motion in a series of overlapping assaults from wall, floor, and ceiling seams.
’Hold line!’ Athena shouted
There was nothing to hold.
Kratos drove the multi-shouldered beast back into a pillar and took a deep cut across his ribs for his trouble. Poseidon tore an entire region of floor into rising spikes that impaled two crawling forms before a third fastened its jaws to his leg. Sun Wukong took to the upper edges of the pillars, his staff cracking heads that threatened to form out of dust. Odin’s spear pierced an ended god-chest and held it until Loki could cut the binding marks at its ankles. Hermes yanked a wound-space open and shut it before the gallery could make further use of the gaps.
Zeus fought near center, with residual force held in tight on a short leash. Every time he made the mistake of flaring too sharply, the gallery walls vibrated as if trying to follow his pattern. Nyxara sealed off one side corridor. Vespera dispatched a long-armed hunter that had been working a blind against Athena.
The memory-traps opened
They did not appear as beasts, but doorways of soft light at misplaced intervals. One bloomed near Hades, revealing a garden that should not have survived, and the suggestion of a woman’s silhouette turning within the light familiar enough to halt his breath.
’Hades!’
Zeus’s shout came too late. Hades approached the doorway, green fire building around both his hands, grief quickening his movements as much as it unhinged him.
The trap collapsed in upon itself.
A third woman emerged from the gallery’s under-dark as if she had always been a part of the stone. Pale bindings ringed her wrists and throat. Her hair was black enough to swallow lantern glow. She moved without hesitation, slapped a death-seal along the memory-trap’s edge, and hauled Hades sideways by the collar, hard enough to send him to his knees as the soft light vanished behind her.
’That is not your dead,’ said the woman, her voice almost quiet beneath the rising din of battle. ’It is gallery hunger wearing her shape. Get up.’
Hades gazed at the woman, his sight still swimming with the wound’s aftereffects. ’Who--’
’Sable. Binder of this span. Later.’ She turned, pressing both palms into the floor, and dark script raced from her fingers to lock three forming doorways before they could spill more stolen faces.
The battle did not pause for explanations.
An unfinished hydra-frame separated from the far frieze and advanced down the center aisle. Zeus met it with Kratos and Vespera on either side. Nyxara took the left wall feed. Athena and Poseidon swept right. Sable lingered near Hades to ensure the trap did not re-open beneath him, then flung binding threads through a pair of crawling corpses until they entwined each other in their death.
She fought as if she understood how endings worked from the inside. Hades took notice. Even bleeding, even angry, he took notice.
They drove through twenty brutal minutes of the gallery span without ever clearing it entirely. For every beast they killed, two more unformed outlines appeared in the stone. Sun Wukong stopped laughing. Hermes limped again. Odin’s breathing had roughened. Loki had no humor left.
’This place is not a corridor,’ Athena muttered between blows. ’It is a mouth.’
’Yes,’ said Sable. ’And it has decided you are worth swallowing whole.’
The gallery proved true to its word.
The far exit had sealed in a plate of shifting ash-law. The entry arches behind them had taken teeth. Pillars bowed inward. The floor had thickened into dragging grit, clinging to boots and chains. From all surfaces, ended shapes poured in greater numbers, less individuals, more something else entirely.
’Cluster!’ Zeus shouted.
They did. Nine survivors, Nyxara, Vespera, and Sable in a close fighting knot as the Hunger Gallery closed in around them. Residual force jolted up Zeus’s spine with enough force to cause him pain. He felt the same distant continuity attention brush the edges of the riot, noting, always noting.
’If you have a door, make it!’ Nyxara snarled.
’I have a tear," said Zeus, through his teeth. ’Not a door.’
He forced the released force out in a brutal controlled rupture at the sealed exit plate. The gallery shrieked in route-voice. Several unfinished beasts came apart mid-lunge. The ash-law plate fractured, and then split. Pain lanced through Zeus’s chest, both his arms, as if the Threshold sought to charge him interest on the power.
’Through!’ Athena grabbed his arm and dragged.
They forced their way out of the collapsing span in a blind uneven rush, Sable sealing the passage behind them with both hands weaving binder script, Nyxara and Vespera slashing at anything that might follow. The gallery walls closed in on the trailing beast’s torso and severed it clean.
Silence struck like a slap.
They lay in a gray side court beyond the gallery’s mouth, choking on ash, bleeding, still alive. Zeus dropped to one knee and remained there until the residual force faded from a scream to a throb. Athena remained at his side. Nyxara inspected the seals. Vespera took stock of living bodies with a grim eye.
Sable stood apart, her pale bindings dark-stained, her attention fixed on Hades rather than the others.
’You feel death too cleanly,’ she said to him, quieter now that they had passed the mouth. ’That is why the trap chose you. Next time, do not walk toward the soft light.’
Hades wiped at his mouth, regarding her as if he had not yet decided whether to thank her or curse the precision with which she had spoken the truth. ’You pull people out of endings often?’
’When it is worth the cost," said Sable. She came closer, neither dramatic nor shy, and pressed two fingers once against the death-mark still fading at his wrist from her seal. The touch was brief, but unmistakable. ’You can repay me by not dying stupidly in my gallery roads.
It was not Nyxara’s open hunger or Vespera’s hard claim.
It was quieter than either. No less direct.
Hades did not pull away.
Zeus forced himself upright and glanced once back at the sealed Hunger Gallery. Behind that stone, ended faces continued their drifting transformations. Ahead, Ashen Threshold opened into broader dead-law terraces and no promise of respite.
They had left one mouth.
The Threshold still had more teeth.
