I Begged His Brother to Get Me Pregnant
Chapter 191: Is It a Trap?
Chapter 191: Chapter 191: Is It a Trap?
Evelyn Grant was so focused on finishing her work and not causing trouble for the firm or Mr. Shaw that she never stopped to consider whether this was all a trap.
And for Mr. Shaw, those were the exact words he wanted to hear.
But, of course, he couldn’t agree right away. That would look suspicious.
He sighed, feigning a difficult position. "But with your health in this state... Ms. Grant, the doctor gave me an earful after I brought you to the hospital! He said I was exploiting my employees."
"The doctor doesn’t know the specifics of the situation, but I do." Evelyn Grant was eager to get back in the courtroom anyway, rather than just organizing files.
"So... I should give the case back to you?"
"Yes! You can send the files over. I can start looking at them while I’m still in the hospital."
"Alright. Most of the prep work is what you did when you first took the case, anyway. The other lawyer didn’t get too involved before the client became unwilling to continue, demanding to have you back no matter what."
Mr. Shaw shrugged, a look of helplessness on his face.
But in reality...
After assigning a senior attorney to the client, they had been more than happy to accept the change.
So when the firm suddenly wanted to switch back, the client naturally refused.
Mr. Shaw had to meet with them multiple times, promise they would win the case no matter what—and that the firm would pay damages if they lost—and even sign a contract to that effect before the client finally agreed.
His boss was really pulling out all the stops to keep Ms. Grant.
As the one tasked with carrying it out, what else was there to say? When the higher-ups give an order, you just do it. Simple as that.
Mr. Shaw chatted with Evelyn Grant in her room for a while longer about other things. The only topic he avoided was her resignation, and Evelyn didn’t bring it up again either.
A little later, Mr. Shaw took a phone call and then got up to leave.
After he was gone, Alex Grant asked with concern, "Sis, your boss didn’t just come here to rush you back to work, did he? You haven’t even recovered yet. How could he do that!"
Evelyn Grant quickly cut her brother off.
"Alex, I’ve only been able to work so smoothly at the firm thanks to Mr. Shaw’s support! Maybe other people would come here to pressure me about work, but not him. He’d never do that."
’He’s the one who told me to take time off when I wasn’t feeling well. A boss like that would never exploit his employees.’
’The only possibility is that the firm is just swamped, and the client demanding my return has backed him into a corner.’
’Since that’s the case, of course I have to help my boss with this pressing problem first.’
That was just the kind of person Evelyn Grant was. If someone was good to her, she absolutely had to repay the kindness. Otherwise, she would be weighed down by guilt.
"Oh... I really thought he was here to drag you back to work. Sis, you can’t keep overworking yourself like this. Even if you won’t do it for yourself, think about me and our mom! She doesn’t know you’re in the hospital. If she found out, she’d worry herself sick."
Evelyn Grant said quickly, "Don’t you dare tell her! Alex, you have to keep this a secret! Besides, look at me. I’m fine, I’ve already recovered."
"You look fine now, but who knows? You’ll probably leave the hospital and work yourself to death, only to be sent right back here in a couple of days." Alex Grant just wanted his sister to rest, and then... wait for his one million.
’He had it all planned out. He’d give half a million to his sister first.’
’All these years, any money she earned went to supporting the family. She never had any savings of her own!’
’He wanted her to finally have some.’
