Chapter 195: Chapter 195: Not Knowing About Your Miscarriage

Worried about interfering with her brother’s studies, Evelyn Grant waited until night fell. Once her brother was asleep on the fold-out cot, she quietly went to find her attending physician.

"Doctor, can I be discharged tomorrow?"

"You want to be discharged?" The doctor raised an eyebrow, then glanced down at her chart. "Based on your condition, I wouldn’t recommend it. You should stay in the hospital for observation. Your family might not know about the miscarriage, but you’re well aware of it, aren’t you?"

If she left the hospital and went right back to working herself to the bone, she could put herself in danger again at any moment.

The hospital was, of course, only considering what was best for the patient.

"I know, and thank you for helping me keep it a secret. But... my brother is a high school senior. If he stays here with me every day, it’ll interfere with his studies! ’This will affect his whole life.’"

Besides, Evelyn Grant felt she wasn’t so weak that leaving the hospital would be a death sentence, which was why she wanted to be discharged.

"Can’t you have another family member come stay with you? That way, your brother can go back to school."

"...I only have my mother, and she has a heart condition. She doesn’t even know I’m in the hospital."

"..."

The doctor fell silent, apparently considering whether to discharge her.

Suddenly, Alex Grant’s voice came from behind them.

"I won’t let you leave the hospital!"

Evelyn Grant and the doctor both turned to look at him.

He had actually woken up earlier, when his sister had slowly shuffled out of the hospital room.

He had been standing outside the whole time, listening to their conversation.

"Alex, you..."

"Did the doctor just say you had a miscarriage? Why didn’t you tell me?" Alex Grant strode over to his sister’s side and looked at her. "You’re in such a serious condition, how can you be discharged?! I absolutely refuse!"

"Alex, listen to me." Evelyn Grant’s throat felt dry; she didn’t know how to explain. "If you go back to school, then I’ll stay."

"If I go back to school, who will take care of you?"

Evelyn Grant pointed toward the nurses’ station. "There are nurses here! And if I really need it, I can hire a caregiver to help! But if you stay at the hospital, it’ll interfere with your schoolwork!"

Alex Grant ran back to the room and returned with the practice problems he’d been doing.

"It’s not interfering at all! See? I’m doing my work right here! I already know everything they’re teaching in class!" His eyes were red with desperation. Grabbing his sister’s hand, he said hoarsely, "Evelyn, please, just stop thinking about leaving! Okay? Just wait until the doctor says you’re ready to be discharged! Otherwise, even if I went back to school, how could I possibly study in peace?"

’He didn’t have any ulterior motives; he just wanted to stay by his sister’s side and keep her company.’

Seeing the siblings’ interaction, the doctor chimed in gently, "He’s right. You shouldn’t be thinking about leaving. Your recovery is the most important thing. Your brother cares about you so much; you should try to give him less to worry about."

Evelyn Grant pressed her lips together and lowered her head. "Mm... I understand. I’m sorry to have troubled you, Doctor."

With that, she and her brother left the doctor’s office, one after the other.

All the way back to the hospital room, Alex Grant didn’t ask a single question about the miscarriage or who the father was.

Evelyn Grant had expected him to.
