Chapter 197: Chapter 197: Wants to Ask Me to the Civil Affairs Bureau

After hanging up the phone, Alex Grant glanced in the direction of his sister’s hospital room.

He looked down, his long lashes casting shadows. "Sis, I swear I’ll work hard on my own so that you and Mom can live a good life, free from any worries."

He had been under his family’s protection for too long.

So long that Alex Grant was filled with guilt.

Back in the hospital room, Evelyn Grant was leaning against her pillows, reading through documents from her law firm.

Hearing him come in, she looked up. "Alex, was that your teacher on the phone?"

Usually around this time, her brother would contact the school to get the day’s practice assignments.

Alex Grant was a senior in high school. His classes had already covered all the new material, so all that was left were endless rounds of review.

"Oh, yeah. Ms. Miller called to check on me."

"She wants you to go back to school, doesn’t she?" Evelyn Grant set down her documents and looked over at him.

Alex Grant immediately cut off what his sister was about to say. "Sis, I’m not going back to school until you’re fully recovered! Besides, I’m not in a hurry. I can do my assignments just the same here. In fact, doing my homework here in the hospital, right next to you, makes me feel more at ease!"

"But at school, you can ask your teachers directly if there’s something you don’t understand."

Here...

’I really can’t be of much help.’

’I’ve already forgotten most of what I learned for my own college entrance exams.’

"I can ask questions here just fine, and honestly, there isn’t much I don’t understand." Alex Grant grinned. "I’m a good student; I know the material inside and out! It’s just some of the trickier problems... I don’t need anyone’s hints. If I just think about it a little longer, I’ll figure it out! My teacher always says that independent thinking is the best way to truly master a problem!"

Evelyn Grant didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.

"I feel like you’d make a better lawyer than me."

’He has an answer for everything.’

Alex Grant scratched his head. "Heh! Oh, right, I’ll call Mom later. When I’m staying at the dorms, I have to call her every couple of days, otherwise she starts to worry."

"Okay, but whatever you do, don’t tell her about my situation!"

"Don’t worry, how could I?" Alex Grant wasn’t an idiot.

’At a time like this, if their mother got sick as well, it would just make everything worse.’

Alex Grant glanced down at the new set of problems his teacher had sent over. Then, waiting until about the time their mother should have finished dinner, he stood up and went out to make the call.

Only after her brother had left did Evelyn Grant take out her phone.

Her fingers hovered over the screen, hesitating several times before she finally lowered her gaze and typed out a few words.

When are you free?

She sent the message, but a long time passed with no reply.

Evelyn Grant didn’t send a follow-up.

She knew Ryan Sterling was always busy with work, so it was normal for him not to have time to check his phone.

What she didn’t know, however, was that Ryan Sterling had seen the message the instant it arrived. He knew exactly why Evelyn Grant had sent it.

’She wants a divorce. She wants to set an appointment to go sign the papers.’

’And a selfish part of him wanted to prolong their marriage with Evelyn Grant for just a few more days.’

’After all... ’

’He had moved heaven and earth for this marriage.’

Right now, Ryan Sterling was utterly torn.

He knew things were over between him and Evelyn Grant—what had happened with the baby said it all. And yet... yet he couldn’t stop himself from wanting to be near her again, wanting to let this dream go on for just a little longer!

No one could tell Ryan Sterling just how he was supposed to forget Evelyn Grant.

He’d thought that losing the baby would be the end of it, that his heart would finally give up.

But the truth was...

’Even if my heart were dead, it would still yearn for her.’
