Chapter 134: Chapter 134: Promise Her

Lu Zhengchuan’s gaze immediately fell upon the ultrasound photo.

It was blurry and black-and-white, and he couldn’t even make out where the arms and legs were, but he stood rooted to the spot.

Those two dark blobs on the page were his children. They were his and Wanwan’s children. His bloodline.

Lu Zhengchuan’s Adam’s apple bobbed. As he gazed at the image, he could almost picture his children after they were born, cutely calling for "Daddy" and "Mommy," running around in the yard.

He imagined scolding them for getting their clothes dirty, and wondered if they would cry or just laugh it off.

He wondered if they would be mischievous or obedient and well-behaved.

Every unborn child was a precious mystery.

In that moment, Lu Zhengchuan suddenly understood why Su Wan had been so insistent on keeping the babies.

If they hadn’t been conceived, he might not have formed an attachment, but they were here now. Whatever the circumstances, the doctors now had a potential treatment plan. Even if it was a gamble, even if it was just a chance, he couldn’t give up on them.

Because they were lives—his children.

Only after reading through all the reports did Lu Zhengchuan place them on the desk with a heavy heart and look up at her.

"Wanwan, don’t worry about money. On a previous mission..." Lu Zhengchuan started, then told her about his plan to sell the car to the military.

Su Wan hadn’t expected such a pleasant surprise.

"That’s wonderful! The doctor said that even in the best-case scenario, if the twins are delivered by C-section at 38 weeks, they’ll definitely be smaller and weaker than average babies. They’ll need nutrient infusions and all sorts of supplements early on, and none of it is cheap. Once they’re two or three years old and have grown stronger, they should be just about the same as any other kid."

"I was actually planning to sell the watches I have to scrape some money together. Every little bit helps."

From the very beginning, Su Wan never had any intention of giving up on her two children.

"Oh, right," she said, getting up and pushing a wooden box over from beside the desk.

"This is what I promised He Rong. Inside is a stack of research materials. I’ve already run some calculations, so it should be fine. The only thing is, he’ll need to find people at a factory to manufacture it. I don’t have the facilities here to produce a proper finished product, only this one I assembled from various parts I scavenged from the scrap station."

Lu Zhengchuan looked at the hunk of metal she mentioned. It was ugly, obviously welded together from an assortment of mismatched parts.

But he knew what He Rong was after. The most valuable part of Su Wan’s creation wasn’t the device itself, but the blueprints and the technology behind it.

"I’ll arrange for someone to deliver it to him," Lu Zhengchuan said, giving her an admiring glance.

"Wanwan, you’re incredible."

Lu Zhengchuan’s admiration was genuine.

No wonder Aunt Zhao was always saying how capable Wanwan was.

This was truly something no ordinary person could do.

"Well, he gave me so much in return. I made a promise, so I have to keep it." Su Wan was completely motivated by the benefits.

Lu Zhengchuan’s voice was tinged with jealousy. "That’s all He Rong is giving you? Just you wait. I’ll bargain with him for you."

"You think you can get more? Isn’t he going to want to punch you?"

At the prospect of getting a bigger reward, Su Wan was also tempted.

It wasn’t that she was greedy; she was just trying to provide for two children and was truly strapped for cash. She would take any job she could get to earn money!

"Of course it’s no problem. I’ll go contact him now. While I’m at it, I’ll file a report with Master Ji. Selling the car to the military takes time to go through the proper channels, so reporting it early will prevent any delays."

Su Wan caught his underlying meaning and was pleasantly surprised. "You... you’re willing to let me keep the babies?"

Lu Zhengchuan knelt, his large hand gently stroking her belly, his gaze tender. "I was being too presumptuous before. These are our children. I couldn’t bear to let them go, either."

"So, if we’re going to keep them, we need to prepare more money. In the later stages, if your condition worsens, we’ll have you admitted to the hospital immediately. If it becomes critical, we’ll go straight to surgery. The priority is to make sure your life isn’t in danger, Wanwan."

Su Wan nodded. Seeing him already making plans showed that he was truly willing to keep the babies. The knot of anxiety in her chest finally loosened.

Overjoyed, she even stood up and planted a kiss on Lu Zhengchuan’s cheek.

Lu Zhengchuan was momentarily taken aback by her forwardness. As she started to pull away, he swiftly wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her in until her pregnant belly pressed against his abs. Aroused, he lowered his head and captured her lips.

The two hadn’t been intimate in a long time. Su Wan’s ears flushed crimson, and a wave of heat washed over her body.

Mindful of the babies, Lu Zhengchuan reluctantly pulled away when he noticed Su Wan’s breathing becoming ragged. Her lips were now redder and slightly swollen, glistening with a suggestive sheen.

His hand was still cradling the back of her head, and he could see the tips of her ears burning red against her flushed cheeks.

"Wanwan, we’re back!"

The voices of Father Su and Mother Su rang out from the front gate.

Su Wan snapped out of her daze. Her eyes met Lu Zhengchuan’s dark, intense gaze, where the desire had yet to fade. She felt her cheeks burn even hotter.

"Wanwan, come on. Let’s go out," Lu Zhengchuan said, clearing his throat with a hoarse cough.

With that, he took Su Wan’s hand and led her outside. 𝒻𝑟ℯℯ

A cool breeze swept through, and Su Wan fanned her face with her hand, managing to quell some of the heat rising within her.

"Dad, Mom, how did it go?" Lu Zhengchuan asked, walking up to them.

He reached for the basin in Father Su’s hands. The tea eggs inside were gone, leaving only some of the broth.

"No need, Zheng Chuan, you rest. I’ll wash the basin." Father Su refused to hand it over, sidestepping him. "You just worry about looking after Wanwan."

Father Su deftly went to draw water and wash the basin.

Mother Su walked over to a stool in the yard, sat down, and took a big gulp of water from an enamel mug on the table.

"Wanwan, Zheng Chuan, it’s all settled."

Mother Su waved her hand like a triumphant lioness and snorted. "When we got there, that Hu Xiang was in the middle of getting a beating from her mother-in-law."

"The Hu Family saw that we had them outnumbered, so they reluctantly came out and apologized. They completely lost face."

"But I’m not so easily fooled. I insisted that the man of their house apologize to me personally and write a formal guarantee that they will never cause trouble for us again. The oath was that if they break it, their sons will be born without buttholes."

Su Wan sputtered with laughter. The words were crude, but in the countryside, that was considered a truly vicious oath.

Most people who made such a vow wouldn’t dare to test it. If they really did bring a curse upon the next generation, their ancestors would probably climb out of their graves to beat them senseless.

"Mom, that must have been a lot of work for you," Su Wan said, reaching out to massage her mother’s shoulders, her eyes filled with a sense of peace and security.

In truth, one of the reasons she had chosen to marry Lu Zhengchuan was that he was from the same village and didn’t have parents-in-law. It meant she could easily visit her own family whenever she wanted.

Now that her parents were here with her in the Capital, Su Wan felt completely at ease.

"What’s so hard about that? You’re the one going through the most."

"Come on, I’ll go help in the kitchen so we can eat sooner. You and Zheng Chuan should get some rest."

At the mention of the word "rest," Su Wan and Lu Zhengchuan glanced at each other—one blushing, the other’s ears burning hot.
