Chapter 143: Chapter 143: Morning Newspaper

After listening to everything she had to say, Su Wan finally understood why she had sought her out.

Su Wan said, "Comrade Huang Qing, my situation might be different from yours."

"Hm? How is it different?" Huang Qing asked, puzzled.

"I’m pregnant with twins. Although my due date is next month, I’m scheduled for an early C-section."

"I need the best obstetrician the military can arrange to perform the surgery to ensure my safety."

"In a situation like this, whether the doctor is male or female doesn’t matter as much as their skill." Su Wan said this, hoping to politely decline Huang Qing’s attempt at friendship.

She had only been here for a few days, but she had already discovered that Huang Qing was far too energetic. Their lifestyles were completely different, so it was better not to force a friendship.

"Ah? It’s that serious? Well, alright then, you certainly have to think that way." Huang Qing exclaimed, then asked with some concern, "Comrade Su Wan, shouldn’t you be getting some rest? Let me help you inside."

Standing for long periods was tiring for Su Wan now, but upon hearing this, she cleared her throat and made an excuse.

"Yes, but I can still walk a little for now. It’s good exercise."

"I like to walk around a lot too. I was still working, but I never expected to be suddenly brought over here. If I hadn’t come, I could definitely have kept working. All the women at my factory work right up until they’re about to give birth, then go straight to the hospital."

"Comrade Su Wan, what do you do?"

"I’m a student," Su Wan answered briefly, keeping a low profile and showing no intention of elaborating.

"A student? A university student? That’s amazing!" Huang Qing’s eyes filled with admiration. She grabbed Su Wan’s arm and pressed her for details on what she was studying.

Su Wan: "..." ’This is the first time I’ve ever met someone so talkative.’

Thankfully, Aunt Zhao came over. Noticing Su Wan’s subtle gesture of rubbing her lower back, she hurried forward. She handed a newspaper to Su Wan with one hand while pulling Huang Qing toward her own room with the other.

"Comrade Huang Qing, didn’t you say your pickled radishes are the best? Let me go have a look."

Huang Qing was a bit unhappy about being pulled away. "Auntie, I was talking to Comrade Su Wan. It’s my first time meeting a university intellectual."

"You can talk later. There’s no rush."

Aunt Zhao was all smiles, leaving Huang Qing with no reason to refuse, so she had no choice but to let herself be led away.

Su Wan breathed a sigh of relief, quickly turned, and went inside. She leaned back on her bed in a comfortable position and began to read the newspaper in her hands.

The front page story was about the outbreak of war in the south. She stared at the report, reading it word by word. Although Lu Zhengchuan wasn’t mentioned, the officially announced information was that they would fight to the death and that the war at the front had already begun.

Master Ji had said that Lu Zhengchuan was a commander at the front line.

Su Wan’s heart grew heavy, but she was also proud of Lu Zhengchuan.

After finishing the newspaper, she couldn’t sleep at all. She decided to sit up and read, working on her research report.

She had paused her participation in the research project with her professor, but she could still continue looking up materials.

While searching, Su Wan came across a familiar name in a pile of materials.

Zhang Qingqing?

’Isn’t that Lu Zhengchuan’s mother’s name?’

Su Wan was instantly energized. She had always heard that his mother was a professor in the Capital.

She saw several physics research reports written by her. This kind of material was not typically released to the public; it was internal information she only had access to after joining her professor’s research project.

’So, Mom was also a physics researcher, and a pioneer in the country at that.’

Su Wan was immediately engrossed. After reading through the research materials, she had a strange feeling. The research was more advanced than some of their current weaponry.

But there was nothing more after that. It was just conjectures, and then it came to an abrupt end.

’If Mom were still alive and had continued her research, she might have truly been able to raise the nation’s military capabilities by a whole level.’

’With that kind of military power, this war in the south would never have even started.’

’Why did Y Country in the south have the guts to attack? Wasn’t it just because they’d probed and found our country’s weapons to be outdated, and now they want to take a bite out of us?’

In the end, if a country doesn’t want to be bullied, superior weaponry is what really matters.

Su Wan quickly sorted through all the materials written by Zhang Qingqing.

Just as she thought. All the documents seemed to be discussing different weapons, but they were all in preparation for the same large-scale missile research project. The related knowledge within them all led to the same conclusion.

「That night.」

Su Wan had a dream.

In the dream, she saw the war in the south dragging on. Lu Zhengchuan was on a plane heading to another city, but the fighter jet developed a problem mid-air and crashed!

Su Wan was jolted awake, terrified. She could still remember the fighter jet crashing into a mountain forest, thick smoke billowing from the wreckage.

"Aunt Zhao," Su Wan called out.

Looking up, she realized it was already light outside. She glanced at the time: eight in the morning.

Su Wan wiped the sweat from her forehead. Seeing no one was around, she didn’t bother calling again. She went straight to her desk, quickly picked up a pen, and wrote down everything from her premonition, afraid she might forget.

That’s right.

Su Wan felt this was a precognitive dream. She hadn’t dreamed in a long time, let alone about something bad happening to Lu Zhengchuan.

Back when she didn’t have any feelings for Lu Zhengchuan, she still couldn’t control the impulse to save him. Now that their relationship was quite good, she was already worried about him. Knowing this, she couldn’t help but feel anxious.

"Wanwan, you’re awake?"

Aunt Zhao had just returned from fetching breakfast from the mess hall and was about to wake her up, but she hadn’t expected to find Su Wan already at her desk, having been there for who knows how long.

"Auntie, yes." Su Wan had just finished writing everything down and was folding the paper.

"I’m going to eat breakfast first. Could you go get Xiao Zhang for me?"

"No problem, I’ll go right now." Aunt Zhao had already eaten before coming back. She placed Su Wan’s breakfast on the desk, then turned to find the person she asked for.

Zhang Qiu hadn’t arrived yet, but Huang Qing came over, her large belly preceding her, and stood at the door to talk to her.

She curiously peeked into the room, exclaiming in amazement, "Comrade Su Wan, you have so many books! Can I take a look?"

Su Wan knew her clingy nature. To avoid trouble, she casually handed her a very basic textbook.

Huang Qing flipped through a few pages, realized she couldn’t understand a thing, and put it down sheepishly. Then she asked again, "Comrade Su Wan, can I look at your other books?"

Su Wan: "...Sorry, I have to go out soon. You can read the newspaper. It’s more interesting."

She casually handed Huang Qing the newspaper Aunt Zhao had brought over yesterday.

Huang Qing’s eyes immediately fell on the news of the war breaking out. Her eyes instantly turned red, and before Su Wan could even finish her breakfast, she started to sob.

"My Lao Zhao must be on the battlefield! I knew it! The military usually doesn’t even bother to inform us family members."

Su Wan: "..."

Su Wan felt a headache coming on. She didn’t know if anything had happened to Lao Zhao, but she did know there was a high probability that something would happen to Lu Zhengchuan. She was already agitated and had no energy to comfort Huang Qing.

Huang Qing, being sensitive during her pregnancy, saw the frown on Su Wan’s face. Her crying hitched, and an uncomfortable feeling welled up inside her. She couldn’t stay any longer and ran back to her own room, covering her face.
