Chapter 145: Chapter 145: A Wife-Prospering Fate

"Go get some rest. I’ll check with my superiors first. We have to follow procedure."

"Thanks for your cooperation."

Lu Zhengchuan frowned. Despite his burning desire to return to the battlefield, he knew it was even more critical to maintain order during wartime.

"Thank you for your trouble, Qi Battalion Commander."

"I’ll be in touch." Qi Battalion Commander got into a military vehicle, returned to his office, and reported the situation to Master Ji.

When Master Ji heard that the inspection had uncovered a new type of problem with the fighter jet, he was filled with sincere admiration. ’That Comrade Su Wan is a truly meticulous and patriotic person.’

If not for her warning, Xiao Lu might have taken a squadron of soldiers up in that fighter, and any accident would have dealt a devastating blow to our nation’s morale.

"That fighter jet is not to be used."

"Get Xiao Lu. I’ll speak with him." Master Ji clearly knew Lu Zhengchuan well.

Upon hearing this, Qi Battalion Commander immediately went to inform Lu Zhengchuan. With a superior handling the matter, he wouldn’t have to waste time trying to persuade Lu Zhengchuan himself.

"Hello, Master Ji." Lu Zhengchuan answered the phone, careful not to betray his anxiety.

Master Ji’s first sentence shattered his plans. "Do you know why I suddenly ordered Qi Battalion Commander to inspect the fighter jet?"

"Why...?"

"The intelligence came from your wife, Comrade Su Wan. Do you remember your last mission? The one with the minesweeping?"

’Of course I remember. How could I forget?’ Though Lu Zhengchuan was always mentally prepared for injury or even death on his missions, he had never felt fear. He was a soldier; retreat was not an option.

But of course, he didn’t want to actually die. Su Wan’s warning had saved his life. More than just grateful, he was happy—happy that she cared about him, happy that she had risked a reprimand to inform her superiors.

’Wanwan really did care about me.’

Lu Zhengchuan couldn’t help but ask, "Master Ji, how is Wanwan doing?"

"Her due date is next month. I’ve already arranged for her to move into the temporary military housing. There are plenty of people protecting Comrade Su Wan, so you can rest assured. The country will ensure you have nothing to worry about on the home front."

"Thank you, Master Ji." Lu Zhengchuan’s voice was a little hoarse. He desperately wanted to be there for Wanwan when she gave birth, to welcome his two little children into the world.

"So my order is this: do not use that fighter jet. In fact, until the inspection results are in, no one is to use it—not just you." Master Ji’s tone was stern. "And don’t even think about using it on the sly."

Lu Zhengchuan nodded. "Yes, Master Ji, I understand. After what happened last time, I definitely won’t take any chances."

"Good, as long as you understand. You’re a lucky kid, you know? You’ve got a good wife who loves you dearly. Every time she comes across information vital to the military, she reports it immediately. And she has the brains to make the right call." Master Ji envied him for having a wife who was not only so caring but also so helpful.

After all, most ordinary family members, even if they overheard something, wouldn’t connect the dots. They certainly couldn’t deduce so many potential outcomes from just a few stray words.

An ordinary person would probably just hear it and dismiss it as gossip, lacking the technical knowledge to understand its significance.

"Your wife’s a lucky charm." Master Ji was still in the mood to joke.

A slight smile touched Lu Zhengchuan’s lips. "Thank you for the compliment, Master Ji. I’d like to be a lucky charm for her, too. I just hope Wanwan and the children will be safe."

"They will be." Master Ji didn’t dwell on their relationship. Instead, they moved on to discuss matters concerning the battlefield.

The issue was the fighter jet problem and how Lu Zhengchuan would get back to the front.

Without the jet, the only options were train and car.

Ultimately, they settled on a travel plan: a train followed by a transfer to a car.

"Battalion Commander, your medicine." Xiao Li had boarded the train with Lu Zhengchuan. Once they were resting in their compartment, he took out some hot water and the medication.

Lu Zhengchuan glanced over. They were Western medicine pills.

"Battalion Commander, I watched Doctor Zhou and Dr. Liu prescribe these together. The names of the drugs are right here."

A man in Lu Zhengchuan’s position couldn’t be careless about what he took. Xiao Li was also meticulous. He checked the names on the medicine bottles, and only after confirming there were no issues did Lu Zhengchuan reach out and take the pills.

"I’m going to rest for an hour. Wake me up then."

"Yes, Battalion Commander." Seeing him lie down on the sleeper bunk and close his eyes, Xiao Li immediately drew the curtain to give Lu Zhengchuan some privacy to rest.

He then turned and went to the dining car to get some food for Lu Zhengchuan.

"Xiao Li, are you getting food for Battalion Commander Lu? I have some milk powder here. Take it to him."

Xiao Li turned to see it was Zhou Lin. He smiled and declined. "Doctor Zhou, you’re too kind. Our Battalion Commander has his own rations; he doesn’t need yours. You should have it. You’ll be exhausted when we get to the front. You need to build up your strength now so you can handle it."

"I’m fine. I brought a hundred-year-old ginseng root with me. If I get really weak, I can take that. I just want Battalion Commander Lu to stay healthy. For the sake of our country, he has to persevere."

’She really knows what to say,’ Xiao Li thought.

Still, he waved his hand in refusal. "Doctor Zhou, really, there’s no need. The Battalion Commander isn’t short on food rations at all. At a time like this, the nation’s resources are all prioritized for the warzone. The higher-ups have already thought of everything you’re worried about."

"You just need to take care of yourself."

"Hmph! I try to do something nice and you won’t even accept it. Fine, then you drink it." Zhou Lin rolled her eyes and shoved the milk powder into his hands.

Xiao Li froze, stunned. He had no idea why she had suddenly gotten angry.

He looked down at the milk powder in his arms, then at Zhou Lin’s retreating back, and quickly hurried after her.

"Doctor Zhou, I can’t take this milk powder! You know the military’s rules as well as I do. If I accept this, I’ll be violating regulations. Please don’t get me in trouble!"

His blunt words infuriated Zhou Lin. "You’ve got the same stubborn attitude as Battalion Commander Lu, don’t you? Can’t even accept a kind gesture. I’ve never met anyone like you!"

"But I really can’t take it."

Xiao Li was getting a headache. He found her far too pushy. He set the milk powder down and prepared to leave.

He was even starting to avoid her like the plague.

Just before he left, a thought occurred to him. He hesitated, then said, "Uh, Doctor Zhou... you do know that our Battalion Commander is married, right? That he has a wife?"

"Are you suggesting I have a crush on Battalion Commander Lu?" Zhou Lin’s expression darkened even more.

Xiao Li grinned. "As long as you don’t, that’s great. I was getting a little worried, to be honest. After all, the Battalion Commander adores his wife. They have a great relationship, and their children are about to be born. There’s really no room for an outsider to squeeze in."

Zhou Lin was indignant. She glared at him. "Don’t be ridiculous. I’m a married woman. I have a husband."

"Ah...? Oh! Doctor Zhou, I’m so sorry! I honestly had no idea. Please, just pretend I never said anything." Xiao Li let out an awkward laugh, suddenly afraid that if he kept talking, someone would overhear and he’d become a laughingstock. With that, he quickly made an excuse and fled.

He didn’t notice the triumphant glint in Zhou Lin’s eyes as she watched his retreating back.
