Chapter 173: Chapter 173: This Is Revenge

Zhang Yun retorted unhappily, "I don’t know about any misunderstanding. All I know is my sister-in-law would never go looking for trouble. She has a wonderful personality—very generous and open-minded. If your sister really fought with her, then it must have been your sister’s fault."

When Zhao Yuan heard this, his fists clenched slightly at his sides before he discreetly relaxed them.

He put on a pained expression and softened his voice. "I’m sorry, Xiao Yun. It’s my fault. I misspoke. Please don’t be angry."

"Sister-in-law, please don’t take offense. I just heard someone speaking ill of my sister and reacted without thinking. I’m very protective of my family; it’s a part of my personality I can’t really change."

"In the future, when Xiao Yun is part of my family, I’ll be just as protective of her. I just hope you won’t dislike me for it, Xiao Yun..." Zhao Yuan looked at Zhang Yun with concern, his voice laced with grievance. "Xiao Yun, if you do dislike it, I’ll do my best to change."

Change?

’Heh. As if he could stop himself from eating shit.’

Su Wan didn’t believe a word of it. But Zhao Yuan clearly had a knack for sweet-talking people; with just a few sentences, he had Zhang Yun beaming, completely forgetting she’d been arguing with him moments ago.

’Honestly, if Zhao Yuan could keep sweet-talking Zhang Yun for a lifetime, Su Wan wouldn’t have a problem with it.’

’But that was clearly impossible. It would be a miracle if he could keep it up until their wedding day.’

"Alright, you may not be clear on the issues between your sister and me, but my third brother will never get together with her. I hope you can help her move on. It’s for her own good. How could she possibly have a happy life married to someone who doesn’t love her?"

Su Wan mimicked his act, putting on a benevolent front.

She added, patting Zhang Yun’s shoulder, "Xiao Yun, I hope your relationship isn’t affected by the issues between me and Zhao Xiangxiang."

"It won’t be, Sister-in-law," Zhang Yun said, moved, and hugged her arm.

Zhao Yuan also smiled with gentle confidence. "Sister-in-law, I definitely won’t let it affect me. I may be protective of my own, but once Xiao Yun and I are married, you’ll be my family too. I’ll be just as protective of you. As for the issues between you and my sister, I’m sure they can be resolved."

"And if that’s not possible, it’s not like you two see each other often anyway. I’ll be the buffer between you; I’ll make sure you’re never treated unfairly." Sweet words flowed from Zhao Yuan’s lips with practiced ease.

Zhang Yun nodded along. "That’s right, Sister-in-law. Don’t worry. If Ah Yuan ever dares to side with his sister and bully you, I’ll be the first one to put a stop to it."

"I wouldn’t be living this good life if it weren’t for you."

Zhao Yuan’s brow furrowed in a flash of displeasure.

Although he had long known Zhang Yun and Su Wan were close, he never imagined she would side with an outsider like this, thinking only of helping Su Wan.

"What good life?"

A familiar voice rang out.

Su Wan looked up to see Lu Zhengchuan striding over. Tall and dressed in his military uniform, his imposing, broad-shouldered frame had already drawn the eyes of the other students nearby. As he walked toward her, she thought he looked so handsome he almost seemed to be glowing.

’His looks alone were striking enough. He really is a credit to me.’

Su Wan smiled and waved him over. "Come here, I have something to tell you."

"Wanwan, what is it?"

"Xiao Yun’s here, and she brought her boyfriend."

Lu Zhengchuan strode to Su Wan’s side. He stopped, placed the water bottle he was carrying into her hands, and said, "Drink some water. It’s so hot."

Su Wan nodded, taking it and beginning to drink.

Only then did Lu Zhengchuan turn to Zhang Yun and Zhao Yuan. He knew Zhang Yun was seeing someone—it had been mentioned in passing when he called his aunt to announce the birth of his two children. But since there was no talk of marriage, he hadn’t given it much thought.

After all, dating wasn’t the same as getting married.

"And this is?" Lu Zhengchuan looked at Zhao Yuan.

Zhao Yuan was visibly intimidated by Lu Zhengchuan’s presence. His palms broke out in a cold sweat as he hurriedly extended a hand. "Hello, Cousin Lu. I’m Zhao Yuan, Xiao Yun’s boyfriend."

Lu Zhengchuan reached out and took his hand. Zhao Yuan tensed, expecting a crushing grip, but Lu Zhengchuan merely gave it a brief touch before letting go.

He then took out a handkerchief and wiped his own hand.

Zhao Yuan’s expression darkened for a second before he quickly masked it with an apologetic smile. "My apologies, Cousin Lu. My hands are too sweaty."

Zhang Yun saw Lu Zhengchuan wipe his hand, but she didn’t take it to heart at all. Waving a hand dismissively, she said, "What’s the big deal? I don’t mind. Look, I’m all sweaty too."

"My cousin’s a soldier; he’s not a germaphobe or anything, just very tidy."

"Oh, so that’s how it is," Zhao Yuan said with a laugh, acting as if he wasn’t bothered by the small detail in the slightest.

"Cousin, can I go home with you, and Ah Yuan can go back to his place?"

Zhang Yun asked him nervously.

Lu Zhengchuan glanced at Su Wan, who gave him a look that told him she was done with the matter.

Lu Zhengchuan said, "Alright, you can come back with us."

"But we have some things to do this afternoon, so we won’t be able to see you home, Zhao Yuan," Lu Zhengchuan said politely.

Zhao Yuan nodded. "You’re too kind, Cousin. I’m a local from the Capital; I don’t need anyone to see me off. In fact, if you or Sister-in-law need any help, just give me a call. I grew up in the Capital, after all. When it comes to knowing the way, I’m your man."

He was obviously very proud when he mentioned growing up in the Capital.

"Oh," Su Wan said with veiled sarcasm, "but I don’t need a guide."

"...Sister-in-law, um, I’ll pass your message along to my sister. Please try not to be so angry. Don’t ruin your health over it," Zhao Yuan said in an aggrieved tone, making it seem as if Su Wan were being completely unreasonable.

Su Wan just rolled her eyes.

Zhao Yuan forced a smile for Zhang Yun, squeezed her hand, and shook his head. "As long as Sister-in-law is happy, that’s what matters. It’s no big deal for a guy like me to feel a little wronged."

"Sister-in-law..." Zhang Yun, feeling sorry for her man, whined coaxingly at Su Wan.

Su Wan said coolly, "Let’s go. I have nothing more to say."

Zhang Yun sighed in defeat, turned to Zhao Yuan, and waved helplessly. "Ah Yuan, you should head back for now. I’ll contact you later."

"Okay."

Zhao Yuan nodded understandingly. "Well then, Sister-in-law, Cousin, Xiao Yun, I’ll be going."

Zhao Yuan turned and walked off campus.

Lu Zhengchuan raised an eyebrow. Once Zhao Yuan was gone, he leaned down and asked Su Wan, "Wanwan, what happened? You’re angry."

"Zhao Yuan is Zhao Xiangxiang’s brother," Su Wan said simply.

Lu Zhengchuan had some recollection of the name Zhao Xiangxiang, but he didn’t think much of it and said instinctively, "What a coincidence."

"Heh, you think it’s a coincidence?" Su Wan said coldly.

Lu Zhengchuan was confused. "Huh? It’s not? I remember you telling me about this Zhao Xiangxiang who had her eye on the Su family’s fortune, pursued Third Brother, and then got dealt with by him. That was over half a year ago."

"Xiao Yun, when did you and Zhao Yuan get together?" Su Wan couldn’t be bothered to argue with Lu Zhengchuan and went straight to the key question.

"We got together half a year ago," Zhang Yun replied without thinking.
