I Came to Divorce Him—His Whole Regiment Adopted Me
Chapter 198: Fair Is Fair
Chapter 198: Chapter 198: Fair Is Fair
"Speaking of which, when Xiao Liu came and told us you were missing, Zhang Yun even had the nerve to blame Wanwan for not worrying about you."
"Now, now. Zhang Yun was just worried about her cousin, which is why she thought Wanwan didn’t care for Zhengchuan. But Wanwan herself was barely eating back then."
Su Wan listened, half-thinking her father must be talking about someone else.
Seeing Lu Zhengchuan grinning from ear to ear, his white teeth on full display, she couldn’t help but say in a flat voice, "Dad, Sister-in-law, don’t celebrate too soon. Lu Zhengchuan is hurt. He’s injured."
"Zhengchuan! Is what Wanwan said true?"
"You’re really hurt? Is it serious? Where are you injured?" Father Su anxiously stood up, wanting to check Lu Zhengchuan’s wounds.
Lu Zhengchuan reflexively said it was nothing.
But Father Su and Mother Su were not convinced at all. They weren’t in a hurry to open the shop anymore; they insisted on taking Lu Zhengchuan to the clinic to get his dressing changed, needing to see for themselves before they could relax.
Lu Zhengchuan said, "Dad, Mom, my injury has to be treated at the military district hospital. They can’t handle it at a regular clinic."
Because it was a gunshot wound, civilian doctors wouldn’t have the experience to treat it, nor would it be appropriate.
"Then we’ll go with you to the military district hospital. We won’t be able to rest easy until we see it," Mother Su said at once.
Lu Zhengchuan was about to say something else, but Mother Su had already changed the subject. "Zhengchuan, Wanwan has classes. She just got into a special lab group and doesn’t have time. But your father and I have time. We can tell Wanwan about it when she comes home for lunch."
"That’s right. You two are busy, but we can still free up some time."
Father Su nodded in agreement.
If Lu Zhengchuan refused again, he was afraid the elderly couple would suspect he actually wanted Wanwan to go with him, rather than truly not needing anyone’s company.
He nodded helplessly and agreed. The two elders immediately broke into smiles, and Mother Su even urged Father Su to finish eating quickly and pack a bag for the outing.
"Wanwan... I..."
"Just focus on getting your wound treated. Don’t take it lightly. I’ll bike back for lunch," Su Wan cut him off, standing up first.
Before Lu Zhengchuan could say anything more, Su Wan had already grabbed her books and, making sure the children didn’t see her, slipped out the door to head back to the university.
’I’ll just wait until lunch to talk to Wanwan about moving into the family quarters,’ Lu Zhengchuan thought.
"Can Tuantuan and Yuanyuan come out with us now?" Lu Zhengchuan was about to leave but suddenly thought of his two children and turned to ask Aunt Zhao.
"Go out? Where to? The weather’s nice today, so it should be fine. But you’ll need plenty of hands. The children are still little; they might just play for a bit and fall asleep on the way."
"I want to take the children to the military district compound." Lu Zhengchuan had really missed his kids. He didn’t feel it much while on his mission, but the moment he returned and saw them, the feeling of not wanting to be apart from them became exceptionally clear.
He tried his best to restrain himself, but the moment he stepped out the door, he couldn’t hold back and turned right around.
"Then let’s take them. Your father and I can look after them. Zhengchuan, you’re injured, so don’t carry them. Wait until you’re healed," Mother Su said comfortingly.
"That’s right, that’s right." Father Su had already happily gone to pick up Tuantuan.
Aunt Zhao quickly said, "Then I’ll go pack some diapers and formula for the children."
Mother Su went to pick up Yuanyuan.
A smile he wasn’t even aware of appeared on Lu Zhengchuan’s face. When Xiao Liu arrived in the military vehicle, the family of five got in and headed straight for the military district compound.
Lu Zhengchuan had his wound treated.
He himself didn’t think much of it.
But when Mother Su and Father Su saw the very real gunshot wound, which had nearly damaged his internal organs, they absolutely forbade him from doing anything but resting properly.
"Dad, Mom, I’ll listen to you both. Since we’re already at the military district compound, let me show you the house the army assigned to me."
"They assigned you a house so quickly? Let’s go, let’s go see it. We can help you clean up a bit."
"Mom, no need to clean. Xiao Liu already arranged for someone to clean it."
Lu Zhengchuan got in the car and called for them to join him. Seeing the smiles on their faces, he felt all his hard work had been worth it.
The military vehicle stopped in front of a house in the family quarters.
The house was about the same size as the one they were renting near the university. It had a front hall, a kitchen, three bedrooms, a storage room, and a bathroom.
There was even a small rockery with a pond in the front yard.
"This house is wonderful! It’s so spacious and well-laid-out. If we tidy up this yard and plant some flowers, it will surely be beautiful."
"This living room is big, too. We could put a large desk and some bookshelves over here on the left. It could totally be Zhengchuan’s study."
"The quality of this wooden sofa in the living room isn’t bad either. With a few soft cushions for the winter, it won’t be cold to sit on."
"Honey, come look! This house actually has heating!" Father Su’s voice was filled with pleasant surprise.
The house they rented near Capital University was an older model and relied on burning coal for warmth in the winter; it didn’t have central heating.
"The conditions here are so much better. When Tuantuan and Yuanyuan come to live here, they won’t have to be afraid of the cold in winter."
Hearing this, Lu Zhengchuan sidled over. "Mom, what do you think about Wanwan bringing the kids to live here in the future?"
"Do you even need to ask? Of course it would be great! Besides, our place is getting crowded. You and Wanwan are husband and wife, but you’ve already been living apart so often. Now that you finally have the chance to live together, don’t be foolish and insist on living separately."
Lu Zhengchuan was pleased. "Mom, that’s what I was thinking, too. When do you think would be a good time to move? We can have the whole family over for a housewarming meal."
"Tomorrow is the weekend. If Wanwan has the day off, we’ll move immediately."
Mother Su made the final call.
Lu Zhengchuan couldn’t stop smiling, little knowing that this very decision would only make Su Wan angrier.
At noon, Su Wan came home for lunch. The two elders were at the shop and hadn’t returned.
After coaxing the children to sleep, Lu Zhengchuan came over and told her about the plan.
Su Wan paused in the middle of eating. She stopped and looked at him. "Lu Zhengchuan, do you think I’ll agree to anything as long as you get Mom to ask me?"
Lu Zhengchuan’s expression instantly turned serious. "Wanwan, I didn’t mean to force you. I was just... worried you were still angry and wouldn’t agree to move into the Capital Military District compound with me."
"And don’t you know exactly why I wouldn’t agree?" Su Wan shot him a glare.
"I know. You’re still angry that I got hurt... I really promise I’ll do my best not to get injured again."
Su Wan looked at him. "Do you think I’m being unreasonable?"
"...No."
’His tone says otherwise,’ Su Wan thought.
Su Wan frowned. "Then just assume I’m being unreasonable."
"Wanwan, just tell me. I’ll change."
"I want you to care about our little family before you care about everyone else. I want you to put our family first in your heart, and the country second," Su Wan said directly.
Lu Zhengchuan frowned and thought for a moment, then looked up at her. "Wanwan, thinking like that... you don’t have the right mindset for a soldier’s wife."
Su Wan didn’t get angry, because Lu Zhengchuan was only speaking the truth.
"That’s why I’m trying my best not to be angry. But I just hope you can be a little fairer. Even if your heart is devoted to the country, can you at least make me feel that you care about our family?"
"I feel like you’re just living for the moment now, as if you’re always prepared to sacrifice yourself." Su Wan’s words struck Lu Zhengchuan like a bolt of lightning.
