The heartbeat echoed through the underground chamber.

Once.

Then again.

Each beat sent a powerful vibration through the ancient stone, causing dust to fall from the ceiling and the seven pillars to tremble.

Ethan stood at the edge of the descending platform, staring into the darkness below.

His system had never reacted this way before.

The energy rising from beneath the First Foundation was unlike anything he had encountered. It was ancient, immense, and disturbingly alive.

More importantly, it was aware of him.

A cold sensation spread through Ethan’s consciousness as the system attempted to analyze the unfamiliar presence.

[Warning: Unknown Ancient Lifeform Detected.]

[Energy Classification: Unidentified.]

[Threat Assessment: Calculation Incomplete.]

[Warning: External Consciousness Attempting to Establish Contact.]

Ethan’s expression hardened.

An incomplete threat assessment was unusual.

His system had encountered powerful artifacts, ancient formations, and dangerous practitioners before. Even when it could not completely identify something, it usually provided a rough estimate of the danger.

This time, it could not.

"Ethan!"

Lysander’s voice broke through his thoughts.

The platform continued sinking, exposing a vast shaft beneath the chamber. Cracks spread across the surrounding floor, and several soldiers struggled to maintain their balance.

"We need to get everyone out!"

Ethan raised his hand.

A surge of cultivation energy spread from his palm, forming an invisible barrier around the group.

The trembling beneath their feet weakened.

"Kaelan, Mira, take the soldiers toward the entrance."

Kaelan glanced at the descending platform.

"What about you?"

"I’m going to find out what we’ve awakened."

"That thing is alive!" Mira exclaimed.

"I know."

The answer made her hesitate.

Ethan turned toward the hooded stranger, who remained kneeling beside the glowing seventh depression.

"You seem remarkably calm."

The man slowly raised his head.

"Because this moment has been awaited for centuries."

"By whom?"

"Those who remember the promise."

Ethan narrowed his eyes.

"The Order of the Seventh Star."

The stranger inclined his head.

"So the records survived."

"Enough to tell me that your order was divided, that Maelius was exiled, and that this place was supposedly destroyed."

"History is written by those who survive its consequences."

"Then perhaps you should explain what actually happened."

The stranger rose.

"Maelius understood something the other rulers of his age refused to accept. Their kingdoms were built upon foundations they did not understand. Their power, their magic, even the land beneath their feet depended upon something far older than their civilizations."

He gestured toward the darkness.

"The First Foundation was constructed to preserve that balance."

Lysander tightened his grip on his sword.

"By burying a monster beneath a city?"

The stranger turned toward him.

"Monster is a convenient word for anything mankind cannot control."

"And what would you call it?"

The man paused.

"The First Witness."

A strange silence followed.

Kaelan looked up sharply.

"The First Witness?"

The stranger nodded.

"Before Maelius, before the first empires, before men divided the land with borders and crowns, there existed beings who shaped the foundations of this world. The First Witness was among the last of them."

Mira stared into the shaft.

"You’re saying something from before the earliest kingdoms is sleeping beneath Starfall?"

"Sleeping," the man repeated softly. "Yes. That is what the records call it."

Ethan noticed the hesitation.

"And what would you call it?"

For the first time, the stranger did not answer immediately.

"Waiting."

Another heartbeat shook the chamber.

The six crystals surrounding the platform brightened.

Ethan felt a faint pressure settle upon his consciousness.

It was not an attack.

It was something resembling curiosity.

As though the immense presence beneath the foundation was examining him.

The system reacted again.

[Warning: Unknown Consciousness Has Detected Host.]

[Spiritual Contact Increasing.]

[Recommendation: Terminate External Connection.]

Ethan immediately circulated his cultivation power.

A layer of spiritual energy enveloped his consciousness, cutting off the unfamiliar pressure.

The heartbeat grew louder.

The stranger watched him closely.

"Remarkable."

Ethan turned toward him.

"What?"

"You resisted its attention."

"Was I supposed to welcome it?"

The man shook his head.

"Most people would never realize they were being observed."

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

"Then you’ve made a serious mistake."

The stranger tilted his head.

"How so?"

"You brought me here believing I would do exactly what you wanted."

His voice grew colder.

"But you haven’t explained what opening this foundation will accomplish."

The stranger’s expression remained hidden beneath his hood.

"It will restore what was lost."

"That isn’t an answer."

"It is the only answer you can understand without seeing the truth yourself."

Ethan gave a faint, humorless smile.

"Then perhaps I should start by destroying your preparations."

He raised his hand.

A concentrated blade of spiritual energy formed above his palm.

The stranger immediately stiffened.

"Do not touch the seals!"

Ethan stopped.

The reaction was revealing.

"Why?"

"Because the foundation is no longer stable."

"And whose fault is that?"

The stranger remained silent.

Ethan glanced toward the six glowing crystals.

His system was already examining their energy.

Each crystal connected to a different pillar. The pillars, in turn, directed power toward the central platform.

But something about the flow was unusual.

The energy was not simply feeding the foundation.

Part of it was being drawn upward from beneath the chamber.

Ethan frowned.

"Kaelan."

"Yes?"

"Look at the inscriptions again. Particularly the ones around the pillars."

Kaelan hesitated before approaching the nearest pillar.

Mira joined him, carrying a small lantern.

The carvings had become clearer since the crystals awakened. Ancient characters glowed faintly across the stone, revealing lines that had previously been concealed beneath centuries of dust.

Kaelan began reading.

"The first stands against darkness..."

He moved to the next pillar.

"The second remembers the fallen..."

Mira examined another.

"The third binds what cannot be slain."

Lysander glanced toward the stranger.

"That doesn’t sound like a sanctuary."

Kaelan continued translating.

"The fourth preserves the boundary. The fifth carries the burden. The sixth keeps the silence..."

He stopped before the seventh pillar.

Its inscription remained dark.

Ethan looked toward him.

"And the seventh?"

Kaelan brushed away the dust.

There were words carved into the stone, but they were incomplete.

"The seventh..."

His expression changed.

"What is it?" Mira asked.

Kaelan leaned closer.

"The seventh decides."

A low rumble traveled through the chamber.

Ethan turned toward the stranger.

"Decides what?"

The man remained motionless.

Ethan’s voice sharpened.

"What does the seventh guardian decide?"

The stranger finally answered.

"Whether the world is ready."

"For what?"

The man looked toward the opening.

"To remember."

Before Ethan could question him further, a violent tremor shook the chamber.

One of the six crystals flashed red.

A thin stream of dark energy emerged from the shaft and struck the nearest pillar.

The ancient stone cracked.

Mira stumbled backward.

Lysander caught her before she fell.

"Enough!" he shouted. "Whatever this thing is, it’s tearing the chamber apart!"

Ethan extended his perception.

The energy beneath the foundation was growing stronger.

But the source of the disturbance was not the ancient lifeform itself.

It was the formation.

The six crystals were drawing energy upward, forcing a response from something that had remained dormant for centuries.

And the empty seventh position was attempting to establish a connection with him.

The realization made Ethan’s expression darken.

"You aren’t awakening the foundation."

The stranger looked toward him.

Ethan continued.

"You’re forcing it to respond."

Silence.

"Those six crystals aren’t maintaining the original seals. They’re interfering with them."

The man’s posture changed slightly.

Ethan noticed.

"You’ve damaged whatever was keeping that thing asleep."

"We have restored six connections," the stranger replied.

"Connections to what?"

"To the Heart."

"Then why is the entire chamber collapsing?"

The stranger did not answer.

Ethan lowered his hand.

"Because you don’t understand the formation completely."

The accusation hung between them.

For the first time, the stranger appeared uncertain.

Kaelan stepped away from the pillar.

"Ethan, the inscriptions support that possibility."

He opened one of the manuscripts he had brought.

"The order’s original purpose was preservation. The seven guardians were supposed to maintain the foundation, not awaken it."

Mira glanced toward the glowing crystals.

"Then someone has changed the ritual."

"Or misunderstood it," Kaelan replied.

Ethan looked at the stranger.

"Which is it?"

The man stood straighter.

"Maelius feared what he created."

"That wasn’t my question."

"He allowed fear to destroy his empire. He divided the guardians, concealed the foundation, and abandoned a power that could have changed the world."

Ethan’s expression remained cold.

"And you believe you can succeed where he failed?"

"We believe his mistake can be corrected."

"By kidnapping my people, murdering soldiers, and bringing an army to Black Hollow?"

"Necessary sacrifices."

Lysander stepped forward.

"Say that again."

The stranger ignored him.

"Our world has endured centuries of war, famine, and division. Kings rise, kingdoms fall, and the same mistakes are repeated. You have seen it yourself, Ethan. You struggle to hold together a council that cannot agree on how to distribute grain."

Ethan said nothing.

"Imagine possessing the power to end those struggles. To restore exhausted lands. To heal the wounded. To prevent entire kingdoms from destroying themselves."

"And you believe the First Witness can do that?"

"The Heart was created to channel its power."

Ethan glanced toward the shaft.

"Then why did Maelius seal it away?"

The stranger’s silence was answer enough.

Another heartbeat echoed.

This time, the seventh depression flashed.

A thread of pale light emerged from the carved name and stretched toward Ethan.

He immediately stepped back.

The thread followed.

[Warning: External Binding Formation Detected.]

[Target: Host Spiritual Signature.]

[Binding Compatibility: High.]

[Host Authorization: Absent.]

Ethan’s eyes narrowed.

So that was their true objective.

They did not merely want him to activate the foundation.

They wanted to bind him to it.

He raised two fingers.

A sharp blade of condensed spiritual energy struck the approaching thread.

The light shattered.

The entire chamber trembled.

The hooded stranger staggered.

"Impossible..."

Ethan turned toward him.

"What did you expect?"

"The seventh seal should have recognized you."

"It did."

"Then why..."

"Because recognizing something and controlling it are two different matters."

Ethan’s voice carried unmistakable menace.

"You carved my name into a ritual formation and expected me to surrender my power simply because an ancient stone demanded it?"

The stranger retreated a step.

Ethan advanced.

"You’ve mistaken patience for obedience."

Before the man could respond, another crack split the floor.

One of the soldiers shouted.

"The entrance!"

Everyone turned.

The passage through which they had entered was beginning to collapse. Fragments of stone fell from the ceiling, blocking half the corridor.

Lysander immediately moved.

"Get the scholars out! Now!"

The soldiers rushed toward the entrance.

Mira seized Kaelan’s arm.

"We have to leave!"

Kaelan hesitated.

"The inscriptions..."

"We can study them when we’re not being buried alive!"

Ethan glanced toward the damaged passage.

"Lysander, take everyone to the upper archives. Seal the entrance behind you."

Lysander looked back.

"And you?"

"I’ll follow."

"That’s what you said before."

Ethan gave him a brief look.

"Then this time, believe me."

Lysander opened his mouth, then stopped.

He knew that expression.

Arguing would accomplish nothing.

"Don’t make me come back down here," he muttered.

Ethan almost smiled.

"Try not to get kidnapped on the way out."

Despite the danger, Lysander let out a short, incredulous laugh.

Then he turned and began directing the retreat.

The stranger watched the others leave.

"You cannot stop what has already begun."

Ethan faced him.

"Perhaps."

The six crystals continued pulsing.

"But I can stop you."

He moved.

The distance between them vanished in an instant.

The stranger barely managed to raise a defensive barrier before Ethan’s palm struck it.

A thunderous impact shook the chamber.

The barrier shattered.

The man flew backward, crashing against one of the pillars.

His hood fell away.

Beneath it was the face of a middle-aged man with pale skin, dark hair, and a thin scar running from his temple to his jaw.

A seven-pointed star had been branded into his forehead.

Blood trickled from his mouth.

Yet instead of fear, his expression held astonishment.

"So much power..."

Ethan approached slowly.

"Who are you?"

The man coughed.

"My name would mean nothing to you."

"Try me."

"Serath."

Ethan stopped several steps away.

"Your position in the order?"

Serath wiped the blood from his mouth.

"Keeper of the Sixth Seal."

Ethan glanced toward the crystals.

"Then there are others."

"Of course."

"Where?"

Serath smiled faintly.

"Closer than you think."

Ethan’s expression darkened.

"How many are inside Starfall?"

Serath laughed.

The sound was unpleasant in the trembling chamber.

"Your city has welcomed strangers for months. Merchants, scholars, refugees, envoys. You built your new kingdom upon openness and trust."

He looked directly at Ethan.

"Did you truly believe we would not take advantage of it?"

Ethan’s gaze turned cold.

A powerful pressure descended upon Serath.

The man’s laughter stopped.

He struggled to breathe.

"You misunderstand something," Ethan said quietly.

"Trust does not mean blindness."

He increased the pressure slightly.

"And mercy does not mean I lack the means to make you regret what you’ve done."

Serath’s face paled.

For several seconds, the chamber was silent except for the heartbeat below.

Then the man spoke.

"You can kill me."

"I know."

"But the foundation will continue awakening."

Ethan studied him.

"Then tell me how to stop it."

Serath’s eyes flickered toward the six crystals.

For the first time, Ethan detected genuine fear.

Not fear of him.

Fear of what lay beneath them.

"The first six seals have already answered," Serath whispered. "The seventh cannot remain empty."

"Why?"

"Because once the Heart calls, the First Witness begins to listen."

Ethan glanced toward the shaft.

"And if no one completes the seventh seal?"

Serath swallowed.

"Then it will awaken without a guardian."
