Chapter 121 - 120: A Familiar Figure! The Origin Begins
Chapter 121: Chapter 120: A Familiar Figure! The Origin Begins
As Lu Feng peered through his binoculars, he saw that the area’s layout was extremely complex. Only the space around three large trees was open; the rest was a maze of intersecting alleyways winding between the old buildings of a residential district.
The old district was clearly a relic from when the town was being redeveloped; otherwise, it wouldn’t have this kind of layout.
But the crucial part was that the entire area, from the open space to every single alleyway, was swarming with a dense horde of zombies.
It was a horrifying sight.
He finally understood where all the nearby zombies had gone. They had definitely been lured here.
The purpose was self-evident: that faction was studying the Hexagonal Beast. They intended to use it to control the zombie horde, and if they succeeded, they could overrun the entirety of Celestial Sea City.
Unfortunately for them, the members of this faction had no idea that the Hexagonal Beast had already developed its own consciousness. It was completely beyond their control; in fact, it had turned these zombies into its own deadly weapon.
This faction was destined to become just another piece of the backdrop for the Hexagonal Beast’s introduction in the game.
"Boss, something isn’t right," Lin Jiao said, her brow furrowed. "According to the intel our Hidden Guards sent back earlier, there weren’t nearly this many zombies here. Now the place is swarming with them."
Lu Feng, however, knew this was to be expected. ’He recalled from the game’s lore that the ’Frenzied Zombie’ arc began precisely like this: a faction gathered countless zombies, only to be wiped out by them.’
The presence of so many zombies meant the faction was located there. Moreover, they were probably about to test the Hexagonal Beast’s abilities.
In other words, the event that triggered the ’Frenzied Zombie’ arc was about to happen.
The only problem was that, in this situation, no one knew where in the complex that faction was hiding.
Lu Feng raised his binoculars and began scanning the surrounding area.
Suddenly, his view settled on one spot. A group of people was being chased by a pack of zombies. Among the pursuers were two unusual zombies, which were scrambling along the sides of the buildings like lizards.
"Hm?" As Lu Feng watched the group, his eyes locked onto a man with a buzz cut and a scar on his face.
The man was clearly their leader, ordering his people to fight as they fled.
A look of surprise crossed Lu Feng’s face. ’He looks just like a character from the origin cutscene for the ’Frenzied Zombie’ arc.’
Lu Feng’s gasp of surprise must have caught her attention, as Lin Jiao also raised her binoculars toward the same spot. Spotting the group, she exclaimed, "Boss, there are people down there being chased by zombies!"
Lu Feng nodded. "Keep an eye on them. I’ll be right back."
The moment he finished speaking, his figure vanished before everyone’s eyes.
Even though the people from Qingfeng Base knew their mysterious boss possessed this ability, they were still shocked every time they saw him vanish into thin air.
Lu Feng returned to his real-world villa, immediately pulled out his phone, and logged into the *After the Apocalypse* game forums. He then searched for the background animation for the ’Frenzied Zombie’ arc.
He was certain he had seen the man with the buzz cut and facial scar in one of the cutscenes.
After watching two background animation videos, he finally found the right one.
In the animated video, it was pouring rain. The view rapidly zoomed in from a distance, focusing on the three large trees. In front of a building, countless zombies were pounding on a large iron gate, the building’s main defense, which was preventing them from getting inside.
The iron gate bore a special mark—what appeared to be a blood-red leaf. This was the very symbol of that faction.
On top of that building, a group of people ran onto the roof in a panic.
Leading them was the man with the buzz cut and scarred face. He was shirtless, and his back was wrapped in bandages, clearly injured.
Chasing them from behind was a group of heavily armed people who were constantly firing at the scarred man and his companions. They were clearly hunting them.
Both sides suffered heavy casualties.
Then, the scar-faced man suddenly pulled a special gun from his back, and it began to gather a ball of crackling electricity.
The sight made the pursuers’ faces change, and they instinctively started to retreat.
The scar-faced man had already fired. The ball of electricity exploded on the ground, and streaks of blue light shot through the rainwater pooled on the rooftop, instantly knocking all the pursuers unconscious.
The scar-faced man was about to lead his people to safety, but at that moment, a sharp arrow came flying and struck him in the shoulder. The force of the blow sent him flying backward.
A bald man then walked out onto the rooftop.
The bald man held a special iron bow, which looked like it would require immense strength to draw.
The bald man then took out more arrows and fired them at the scar-faced man’s companions. One after another, they were struck and fell to the ground.
The scar-faced man’s face filled with grief and anguish at the sight. But the bald man had already closed in, wrapping a special kind of rope around his neck and pulling tight, choking him unconscious. He then strung him up against a wall.
The narrative showed he had only been choked unconscious, because he woke up after being hung on the wall and began to struggle frantically.
Just as he was struggling, the iron gate unexpectedly opened from the inside. It was revealed that the one opening the door was a completely rotten zombie.
This was clearly a mutated zombie, and a highly intelligent one at that; otherwise, how would it know how to open a door? But as it appeared, a tentacle emerged from behind it.
At that point, the video ended abruptly.
Lu Feng understood the moment he saw this. ’That’s a mutated zombie under the control of the Hexagonal Beast.’
He finally understood why the man with the buzz cut and scar had looked so familiar.
The man was an NPC from the ’Frenzied Zombie’ arc’s origin cutscene. Although he was nameless, he had at least made an appearance in the animated backstory.
With a thought, Lu Feng returned, reappearing on the rooftop.
Seeing him return, Lin Jiao immediately reported, "Boss, that group made it into a building. Their leader, the man with the buzz cut, is injured. Those two mutated zombies are extremely intelligent; they even know how to throw things. The leader was hit in the back by a steel pipe. At this rate, they won’t last much longer."
"His back?" Lu Feng froze for a second, the scene from the animation flashing in his mind. He immediately commanded, "To that building! Now!"
’From her description,’ he thought, ’the event from the backstory might be about to start.’
’This is the perfect time to head over.’
Upon receiving the order, Lin Jiao immediately gathered their personnel. They followed Lu Feng from the rooftop of their building and headed straight for the one where the group was trapped.
By this time, the building was completely surrounded by zombies. The two mutated ones clung to the walls like geckos, eyeing them menacingly.
Upon spotting Lu Feng’s group, the two mutated zombies whipped their heads toward them and let out a roar.
Spurred on by the roar, the surrounding zombies surged toward Lu Feng and his team in a frenzy. Each and every one of them looked exceptionally rabid.
